  1. I shoot a few guns that I don't really like. My current turkey gun is a BPS. I shoot it because it patterns the best of all my shotguns. It is heavy and cumbersome. It is as smooth as 80 grit sandpaper. It is nearly impossible to clean. It collects dust and sand like a Dyson vacuum. It kicks like a mule. But, it tosses a very good pattern, so I carry the gun around.

I just bought a new 870 yesterday. Couldn't pass up the deal. It's an 870 SM in MO Bottomland, and comes with a few bells and whistles. I probably will not love it. But it might be 'the' next turkey gun, so I'm going to give it a try.

The Nova has done nothing for me over the years. Hard to pattern rattletraps, no thanks....

  2. your not listening.. if you are hunting in MO.. you have to have some sort of medical issue to not stumble upon a turkey.

Some years this is true, but not every year, and certainly not a given if you only spend a short period of time there :)

But, being from MoMo, it's pretty near and dear to my heart, and I enjoy hunting there in general. I'll put in my time and see what happens:

  3. I think that's about it gonna be a waiting game. I will have to turn into a deer hunter almost to have or create some dumb luck.

I just contacted all of our outfitters and asked for the use of as many blinds as possible.

Also, I plan on sitting in some deer blinds and old barns.

They tend to move around all day in the rain, unless it's a real downpour, so there is always a chance :)

  4. I just don't want the rain to keep them from being vocal.

Rain will likely shut most things down or at the very least, throw things off their normal schedule. Best bet is to try to nail one right off the roost. I've done this in a driving rainstorm. But after the roost, everything changes. For years, I've run & gun in the rain with very limited success, but this year, I will not even bother. I'm going to set up a blind, or at least my big umbrella, put out every decoy I own, and sit there like a bump on a wet log. The birds will move all day, mostly likely in a group, all wet and miserable, but they will move. I'll try to find any sort of pattern, and just wait for them.

Sadly, I'll be hunting MoMo, Kansas, and Nebraska all next week, and I predict it will be a total disaster. I will be very lucky to get even one bird.

But, it happens, and there is nothing we can do about it, so I'll give it my best :)

  5. It just seems most shotguns seem to be drilled and taped anymore, at least the ones I've looked at.

Yes, just the ones you are looking at. Other than some slug guns and some turkey guns, which logically might require a base at some time, I think virtually no regular shotguns come drilled and tapped as a standard feature.

Water can get in the holes and cause rusting, the plugs and/or cover screws are not really appealing visually, etc.

The SN's you mention are supposed to come drilled & tapped....

  6. Hello I am pretty new to this sight. I just purchased my third Benelli. I must say I am a bit disappointed my new M2 is not drilled and taped for a scope. Both of my Supernova's came ready for a scope. I wanted to get a M2 for turkey and now I still have to pay a gunsmith to drill and tap it. It just does not seem right to spend over a thousand dollars for a gun you still have to have a gunsmith work on. Is it normal for the M2 to not be drilled and taped for a scope?

Sort of an odd subject. The website specifications only show 'drilled & tapped' for a few models; Steady Grip, Tactical, etc.

But you say all of your SN's came drilled & tapped, and my SBE II in Max4 came drilled and tapped, so I don't know what to think?

I'd say no, based on the current specifications, your M2 should not have come drilled and tapped.

But there is something strange going on. Maybe Benelli did drill some guns before, and now have stopped?

I do know that I have read some complaints from folks that do not like their gun being drilled for them. They don't like holes in their guns unless they wanted them there in the first place.

I'm going to guess that Benelli did drill in the past, but stopped for some models for some reason, probably related to the cost...

  7. Hope nobody minds a post about 2010 turkey hunting photos!

Conditions were tough. Birds living in backyards - being fed - can't blame them - much safer than those dark scary woods.....

Went in with high hopes, came out very happy to get the one bird!

Hmmm, where would I go if I was a turkey?

  8. Looks like cosmetic damage at the worst. Doubt it will affect the functionality at all. I've read about various gel pads losing some material, but all the replies I have seen from Benelli and Beretta say it's normal wear and tear. I suppose you could complain to Benelli CS and see if they will give you a new pad.

The fancy recoil pad on my new Maxus started to fall apart after a few hunts. I complained about it when I sent it back for repair after the gas piston spring broke. Browning replaced the pad while it was back there.

  9. Just about done here at home. Now on to a few other states. I'm excited about the trips, but I am almost certain the weather is going to be a major factor in my success, or lack thereof, this year.....

Sorry I'm the picture. Insert some demeaning comment from Tucker here :(

  10. I shoot 3.5" H-13 #6's & #7's. I do so because they pattern well in my guns and seem to be very effective in the field. I loaned my gun to a buddy last weekend. He returned with a big tom and a wide-eyed expression on his face. He had taken a long shot and had crushed the bird. I try to use the best equipment that I can reasonably afford :)

  11. 10 gauge waterfowl loads kicked like a 20 gauge though....

Thats good to know. My next gun purchase was going to be a 10ga auto, hearing this it makes it more likely.

Definetly want the auto, not a pump.

No doubt about it - regular 10 gauge factory waterfowl loads are almost pleasant to shoot given the heft of most 10 gauge guns, be they semi-autos or pumps. And oh boy, does the 10 gauge pattern well with steel shot :)

I will buy another 10 gauge some day, just not right now...

  12. well my stoeger 350 3.5" 12 ga weighs only 6.4 lbs and i have fired 2 1/4 oz load @ 1200 fps .So i think i can handle a bps 10 ga which has a slower recoiling fps

Last year I shot almost 200 12 gauge H-13 2.25 oz loads in 3-4 shooting sessions with no problems at all. I thought a few of the 10 gauge Nitros would be a piece of cake. They weren't for me :D

10 gauge waterfowl loads kicked like a 20 gauge though....

  13. This being a turkey hunting forum, I presume you are asking about longer barrels patterning better for turkey hunting guns.

Advanced pattern testing shows some longer barrels can be better for turkey loads.

Worst guns I have ever tried to pattern have been 24" bbl guns :( 26 & 28 has gone better....

  14. I have decided to purchase the indian creek turkey choke for my benelli m2. I came to the conclusion on a somewhat blind leap of faith, as i am not able to buy and pattern every choke tube I would like to. The advice on this site is generally pro indian creek so i will take your word for it. My question is which of the IC chokes fit the m2, is it the one that says it fits the benelli/beretta, or the one that fits the sbe2/extrema2. I have tried to email IC about this but having them return an email is a small miracle in itself. I dont live close to the store that sells the choke, and everyone i have spoken to there has a different answer. Any educated advice would be greatly appreciated.

  15. Mudhen what gun and choke did you use with the H-13. And have you found any better combo for the sbe II than the jellyhead and xr wins

    I'm using the BPS 12 with the IC .665 + H-13 #7's 2.25 oz.

I did try to tune my SBE II with the #7's, but was not able to come up with anything that printed very close to the BPS.

But, some guys over at Old Gobbler are dialing in the SBE II and H-13 #7's. Just go check out the shooting section and search by SBE. I recall hearing that Pure Gold chokes are working well.

    Good luck!

  16. Thanks for everyone's input.I think I'm going to use the H13 #5 which is dead on.I guess I will play with the MB after the season is over. From what i'm reading and hearing the MB takes alittle work to get it right.

    Thanks again.

H-13 #5 is a great load - probably under-rated with all the new salt shot coming out. It can be an absolute crusher :)

  17. Sounds like the gun is sold already.

Good deal for $700? Cost is probably $850 these days. I've never owned/wanted an 18.5" smooth-bore before.

But, the gun is probably $1000-$1100 new, so $700 may not be that bad....
