    M1 Field 20ga

BLKLABMAN, Thanks for the info. I checked out the Briley website. How do the extended ported choke tubes affect the shot pattern? Does the porting muffle the muzzle noise in any way? Reduce the recoil?
  2. The price difference between these two shotguns is considerable! Is it really worth purchasing the M1? 20 ga. Nova Pump owners ... how's the kick? how's the slide? smooth action? quick follow-ups? I'm looking for a 20 ga. duck gun (will be shooting 3" Kent Matrix and Kent Fast Steel).

    M1 Field 20ga

Thanks for the reply. Do the Briley choke tubes come with the shotgun, or are they special chokes? I'm only familiar with Remington's "Rem Chokes". I used Kent Tungsten with my Rem. 11-87 12 ga this year with a M choke and had excellent results that FAR exceeded steel shot. Great patterns and excellent knock down power.
  5. I hunt gray squirrel with a Rem 1100 LT-20 all the time (with an Imp. Cyl. fixed choke) and I generally use 2 3/4" shells with number 6 shot. For cottontail rabbits, I suppose shot size and choke would be determined by how FAST the rabbit is moving and how THICK the cover is. In either case your liable to get your rabbit with either an IC or M choke and no. 6 or 7 1/2 shot.

    Thanks. That's great information.

    M2 vs. M1

Do you know if the M1 Field 20 ga is offered with crio choke tubes?

    M1 Field 20 ga.

M1hunter, Thanks for the insight. I currently duck hunt with a Rem 11-87 and have had great success, but the gun is quite heavy. I also have a Rem 1100 LT-20 2 3/4", which I enjoy small game hunting with, but the chamber size and the fixed improved cylinder barrel render it fairly useless for ducks (it's more of a squirrel, rabbit and close-in dove gun). The M1 Field 20 interests me because of its light weight, smooth action (and from what I've heard, near absense of felt recoil), it's 3" chamber and it's five choke tubes, not to mention the cool weather-proof camo finish. With a 3" chamber, Tungsten shells and a modified (or full, in the late season) choke tube I think it would make a nice duck gun. It seems that you would agree. Have you shot steel from the M1 field? I'm assuming it has a steel-safe barrel/chokes.
  9. Thanks for the reply. Sounds like it would work well for turkey. One assumption I am making is that the M1 can be used with steel shot. I would probably use Hevi Shot or Kent Tungsten for ducks with this gun, but it would be nice to have steel as an option up close over decoys. Is the M1 Field barrel steel-safe?
  10. I'm thinking of buying an M1 Field 20 gauge, and I was wondering if anyone has had luck using it as a turkey gun. I plan to use it for ducks (with Kent Tungsten Matrix shells), squirrel, rabbit and doves, and will likely buy it in the Camo pattern. Think it will work on turkeys with a full choke? Any suggestions for shot size?
  11. I use an IC choke for steel and a modified choke for Kent Tungsten Matrix. Modified works extremely well with Kent. I shot Kent exclusively this duck season: No. 5, 2 3/4" shells. Best year yet, I took 32 ducks and one goose. Kent can be expensive, but you can't beat the knock down power! Great stuff. Sometimes I'll shoot Kent with an IC choke, but that's usually only over decoys for the first few days of the season.

    M1 Field 20 ga.

I am thinking of buying a M1 Field 20 ga. in Advantage Timber HD for duck hunting (with steel and Kent Tungsten Martrix) and small game / upland hunting (squirrel, rabbit, dove, and grouse). I'm curious to hear from current owners of this shotgun. Have you used it in these hunting situations? What do you think of the durability of the camo finish? Plus your overall impressions of this shotgun. I currently duck hunt with a Rem 11-87 SP 12ga., but would like to add a versatile 20ga. to my collection. Please advise.
