Steve thats exactly what it was doing . I took the forearm of and cleaned that really good in there. Does that gas piston come apart. I couldn't find my owners manual so I couln't tell.Hard to believe it would get dirty that quick. I guess if thats it I will have to take it apart more often.
Not to keep brining up my bar, but I used that hunting for about six or seven years without taking it apart. Started finally jaming . Buddy showed me how to clean it. I coulnt believe the bolt would even open with the crud in there.
Thanks for the help guys. Thats gotta be it. exactly what its doing to the T.
The gas piston does come apart and I found that it had to be cleaned after each and every firing or mine would get gunked up and misfire.
I wrote a thread on it with photos.
See it here.

Well shot again today and the same outcome. First shot would go off, second wouidn't. I noticed that after the first shot bolt wouldn't close all the way, even if i single fired it with no clip. After trying it I called benelli. I must say customer support seemed real nice. Anyways they said send it in. So it now in its way.
My R-1 would also do the same thing when the gas piston was dirty. The dirty piston would prevent the bolt from locking into battery and the firing pin would fire but fail to strike the primer.
One easy way for me to check to make sure it was free was to remove the foregrip and pull the bolt back, the gas piston should move freely.
When it gets fouled it causes friction and the bolt will not lock all the way into battery.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for tip on gas piston. How do you approach cleaning the bore? I have been a bolt action guy and am used to inserting a bore guide. With this semi-auto, I am guessing I need to use a bore snake. What say you?
I use a bore snake in the field, but take it apart and remove the bolt and clean it with a carbon fiber rod from the breach once I get home. I store mine with it broken down, not sure if they have improved the gas piston since I bought mine in 2005, but I have had it get stuck together and just found it better to keep the barrel and receiver apart.
Read the entire gas piston thread,, I have photos of how I clean mine using a boreguide.

Congrats on you new R-1,, don't really take anything special as far as tools goes. I like to use a punch or allen wrench to remove the piston nut, but you can use the end of the barrel nut that holds on the foregrip. The key I found is to NEVER put it away with cleaning the gas piston.
This thread will get you started PM me with any questions. I have shot mine a lot, in rain and near salt water.

I would call DNZ and ask them what the issues are with using them with a rail mount such as shown above? Sounds like he has also had issues? If the receiver is not level and the DNZ mount is not level you will have a shimming issue which is not a great thing to have to do as Leupold Techs told me only 1 shim should ever be used! Was the rifle bore sighted prior to shooting? Sounds like it was not and i strongly recommend taking it to someone that professionally installs scopes as i did on my 338-378!
The DNZ mount replaces the rail, it is a ring/rail combo. I don't see away to shim the front or back independently.

Just finished putting my dmz mounts on and shot. Sill ran out of adjustment in scope. Using a brand new redield Dead on at 80 yards, at the end of the adjustment. Any help would be appretiated. Does the long part of the dmz rings go toward the back of the gun?
Look at your factory rail. One end is thicker than the other, and if memory serves me correctly the factory rail is marked with front. I tried a DNZ mount and discovered the same problem you are finding. I went back to the factory rail and a set of Warne Quick detachable rings. Allows me to remove the scope for cleaning and transport. I sent my DNZ mount back with a note telling them about the issue and received a refund.
Use the factory rail as a guide, and measure the thicker part and make sure you installed the DNZ the correct way. I'm away from home now and can't look at mine for a reference.

Congrats on your new rifle. Check out these two old threads for some ideas, and clean it, clean it, clean it. Pay attention to the gas piston thread.

I was hoping some of you with more experience can help me with this. I'm looking to get an R-1 in either 300 Win Mag or 300 WSM, however I was looking for some input.
Its my understanding that the WinMag has a bit more power than the WSM.
I live in Northern Cal, I'm looking for gun that will be used in Northern Idaho and Alaska.
I have an SBE2 and love it, I have pins in my shoulder from an accident years ago so the light recoil is a big plus for me.
Could someone give me the pro's and con's of both.
Thanks guys.
P.S. I will be buying it with the comfor-tech stock.
I have a little experience hunting with a 300WM R-1, check out this thread.

If your R1 was lost or damaged beyond repair would you considering buying another one? You seem to have great deal of experience with this gun. I'm considering buying one but would appreciate your advice on this matter. Thanks.
No Sir, My R-1 and I have had a great run. I have shot out the barrel and have chosen a bolt action as my go to weapon. I have some big bear hunts planned and I needed more firepower.
Good luck with your shopping...

Moved up here about 6 years ago. I'm home now, without doubt the most beautiful place I have ever been. The winters can be tough. However you learn how to adjust and find things to do inside.

Still around, it's still winter up here in the great land. I did get a chance to get out and shoot my R-1 some, having a hard time getting it to group. I have fired over 2000 rounds with it and I'm afraid that the barrel may be starting to feel it. I scoped it and saw that the rifling is burnt away opposite of the gas port opening, it also has some throat erosion. May have to look for a new barrel for it. Going after bears next year in some big bear country, might have to consider a little more firepower. I have a lot of time in the field and history with my R-1, but all relationships has ups and downs. Still have a few more months to think about it.
Good Luck All

The other issue I can see with clamping the mount to the barrel on a R-1 is that it would have to be removed to disassemble and clean the rifle, because of the way the foregrip slides off. When I hunt by the sea, I have to disassemble and clean my R-1 at least every other day or so.
To each their own, more than one way to boil an egg.

I was looking at their site and did see the barrel adapter. Too much added metal for me, plus it looks like it could cause rust between it and the barrel.
Just cut and paste and replace the stars with i then pod.

The R-1 has an unique nut that holds the foregrip on. I have never seen a Harris mountable rest that would mount to it. This forum blocks certain key words to cut down on spam, that is why you can't get anything to show up that sounds like pod.

I bought my wife a setup made by Stoney Point. Works great and is not too heavy, she has taken several big game animals with it including bears.

Sounds like it the bolt is not locking into battery. Meaning that it is not going all the way forward. I've had this happen on mine when the gas piston was dirty. I would remove and clean the gas piston and try again.
