I read the entire thread and I keep thinking of a Simpson's episode where Homer put one of those novelty "Drinking Bird" toys next to his keyboard and it kept pecking the enter key...over and over and over again...PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!

Scenario 1
That little needle shaped thing is the "quick release"! It's part of the new Obamacare initiative. This way if you don't have the mandatory natiional health insurance they can restore the wrist quickly to its gnarly twisted state with a quick pull of the pin.
Scenario 2
Its a triggering pin like that on a grenade! If the Orthopedic surgeon pulls the pin and starts counting...rip off your arm and thow it as far away from you as possible.
Helpful hints; if your doctor wears a turban suspect scenario 2. If its Obamacare chances are the doctor was wearing a little propeller beanie.

The 30 in-lbs was for steel to steel mounting. Agree, it's probably too much and based on how easily the stock rail comes off unlikely to be what the OEM rail was torqued to.
When I was a machinist the rule of thumb for torquing fastners was to tighten them until they snapped off and then back off a quarter turn!

is the stock rail really that bad ?
IMHO it's the groove down the middle that will determine if it works for you or not. If you have an optic or mount with bars all the way across that fully engages the rail key (like an Eotech) I think it is OK.
The definite problem is with mounts that are also keyed or grooved in some way (the LaRue only has small ears that engage the rail groove). Such that there is not a complete horizontal bearing surface. In this situation you end up with only minimal contact between the mount and the rail. There are pictures posted of the LaRue mount that clearly show that only a tiny corner of the mount key bears against the corner of the Benelli rail. This situation clearly calls for a non-grooved rail to ensure full engagement of the mount keys in the groove.
I have an Eotech and the cross screw bears fully on the Benelli rail keys and I don't worry about it. I'm buying the rail in case I want to try other optics with the gun.

I borrowed a heat gun from a coworker. It had a locking trigger so I turned it on and set it down on top of the stove in the kitchen with the nozzle pointing into the kitchen. This left both hands free to handle the receiver and mag tube. I had a pair of heavy leather gloves to protect my hands. I kept turning the assembly so I evenly heated it. I periodically gave it a good twist with my hands. Once it reached the right temp, slight smell and wisp of smoke, it started turning. It did turn very slowly and I kept heating it a little as I turned it. No vise or strap wrench was necessary.
I also considered heating it in the oven. I think it would work well but I was concerned about chemical smells...mmmm...Loktite flavored cookies.

It's currently being used to hold Kip's Lunate and Ulna bones together!

Looks like it was re-listed and finally sold for $600. I was really hoping he would get the one grand he originally listed it for.
Oh well...one positive note, I showed my wife the listing after she was mad at me for buying mine from Botach at $225. Her attitude suddenly changed from "Why are you wasting money on guns!" to "Should we buy more gun stuff?"

Maybe its squished too much. Mine required snap ring pliers to remove. You could probably pry the opening apart with a screw driver and then use snap ring pliers to compress it for installation.

I have an M4 and the heat gun worked easily. Looks like the M3 is a different animal. I did a little Google search and found the following thread on another forum. The guy had to give up on the heat gun and break out a torch (YIKES!). Good luck! You apparently have some captive plastic parts in close proximity to tube and receiver. A small torch may allow you to concentrate heat right on the threads in the receiver.

I have one of those in the mailing tube CC sent theirs in. It's tossed in the closet some where....... I think I better keep it in case another zombie manages to dent the CC tube.
I keep mine in the CC mailing tube too! I'm not worried about zombie bites. I just think its a good idea to have the parts to quickly restore an M4 to factory condition for those of us not technically compliant with import restrictions.

Back in the old days of 'ought five, when this thread was started, machining technology was not up to the same standards it is today. The barrels were scooped out with dull spoons and polished with tree branches and sand. The stocks were made out of old barn boards and the triggers was nothing but a bent nail. You had to sit for hours running the bolt back and forth with fine sand in the receiver to deburr the action. Like the old muskets you had to "proof" the barrel yourself with high power loads. If the barrel didn't explode you were good to go.
You all do realize you are supposed to prop the gun up agin a tree and tie a string to the trigger while you are hiding in a foxhole for the first 25 rounds...dontcha??
I want to hear more about less lethal rounds!
... Everything I've fired through it has cycled since EXCEPT less-lethal rounds I got from work. But I totally expected that, as those hardly have any powder to them. Heck, the bag drops about 2-3ft @ 25 yard!!...Do you compensate for the excessive drop...or just go with the nut shot?

I would be concerned that any type of pad, carpet, or mat would trap moisture. I used to work for a HVAC Wholesale distributor and they had rubber waffle pads that you could use under heavy equipment. I think the hockey pucks are a great idea too. I think the key to preventing rust would be adequate air circulation.
My second thought would be a wood frame with vapor barrier towards the floor and insulation in the middle. Maybe combine some Styrofoam sheets with the hockey pucks (cuts some round holes in the insulation that are puck diameter, let the puck hold the weight so the foam doesn't get crushed. My rationale for insulation is the Styrofoam liner I see in toilet tanks to keep them from sweating. Should be the same principle. Airflow would still be near the top of my list if I was worried about condensation.
One last thought; we had a warehouse here in Ohio where the condensation was so bad it was slick as ice. One solution they seriously proposed was heating the floor! You didn't have to make it very hot, just enough to prevent condensation. They make heating mats for tile floors that may work spiffy if you live in an area where condensation is a problem.

I used some cheap leather welding gloves I got at Harbor Freight years ago. Gripping it was not a problem with the gloves. You do have to be patient and let the heat do the work. It just started to smoke (fume) a bit before it turned easy.
