M4 Porn

I'm just curious why you guys (KB Fab & Shawtgun) keep the OEM forends and didn't install the aftermarket ones on the M4's? (e.g. Surefire, Brügger & Thomet, Mako, etc.)

Ditto on that. I've tried most of those you mention and still I always come back to the factory one. :)

The factory handguards are the most ergonomic, comfortable and lightweight option out there.

Yep......this. I have handled the Surefire and didn't really care for it. I'm a KISS kind of guy when it comes to these things and about the only thing else I'll add is a sling.

Mine with the B&T fore end. I tried a Surefire for end and it was really wide... not to my liking. the B&T has a narrow girth on the bottom rail making it very comfortable to hold, even more so than the stock fore end. I will say the B&T does add weight, but it isn't that significant. With the full length M4, I'd stick with the stock fore end.

Very nice set up!! Honestly, my back is hurting just thinking of the weight of that puppy fully loaded. All I put on mine was a sidearmor rail system and I'm already debating on taking it off due to the added weight. I even went the route of changing the magazine tube to titanium one. I found that when using my shorty all decked out for 3 gun, I find myself slowing my transitions between targets. I know how tacti-cool it is to dress our guns and all but lately I've been asking myself the question wether I'm being a tacti-fool by losing a bit of functionality. But it sure is fun having people walk up to me asking me what the h3ll I'm holding. Lol

Completely agree with the weight assessment. I moved away from full rail systems on my AR15's for the same reason. I had the older SideArmor top rail for a while in order to mount my light. Then I transitioned to the Surefire M80 with an offset mount. I hated the ergonomics and wished I was running the factory handguards again.

It bugged me for about a year before I had enough of it and decided I would fix the problem myself. I hacked up a set of FFT handguards and mounted an IWC light mount to the plastic handguard. Fun ensued as I filled around the mounting points with epoxy. Then I had the parts refinished in Cerakote. While it doesn't look 100% perfect, it is 100% functional.

The only thing that would make this better would be if it was a 14" rig, or an even shorter 12.5" custom job.

Honestly, the 14" is about the limit to what I would consider viable for its intended use......otherwise, it's basically a semi auto Serbu Shorty that would most likely need port modification for reliable cycling. Also, recoil in the 14" is noticeably more than the 18.5" model. I love my 14" but really wouldn't want anything shorter after using it for a while.
