Benelli m4 out of box assembly

Hi there,

I recently purchased a Benelli m4 and I tried to assemble it out of the box and was having difficulty snapping/clicking the barrel into the receiver. It seems so easy on the videos and I feel like it shouldn’t require this much force to put it together. I locked the bolt to the rear and tried to slide the barrel in after lining up the fore grips but it is not clicking in place. It seems to stop right before it is about to engage. Any recommendations will be appreciated.

Never force it. Sometimes it all goes together smoothly and sometimes it takes a little finessing. I start the barrel ring over the mag tube and then assemble the the halves of the guards together up into the front retaining ring on the barrel, then holdong the halves together tightly on the barrel, I slide the whole assembly down until the rear of the guards are held in the rear plate and the barrel extension is seated into the receiver.  Sometimes it takes a slight bit of wrist action to align things perfectly.

Keep in mind that there is a flat spring inside the barrel hand guard retaining ring that keeps the whole unit forward about 1/16" until it is compressed by the mag tube retaining nut.

Just be patient, go slow, and you'll be surprised how easy it goes together.

Thank you Evolution,

I’ll give that a try. I am Kind of worried I might have damaged something because I was forcing it for a little while until I posted this thread. Do you know if the pistons are easily damaged when it is not aligned right with the holes during assembly?

You mean like maybe you bent one or both of them? I wouldn't think so. Do they still slide back and forth normally? How do the exposed portions of them look to you?

Also remember, there are channels in the receiver that the pistons need to slip into when inserting the barrel extension into the receiver. The receiver is aluminum and the pistons are steel so I would think that if anything got buggered up, it would be the receiver but, don't go there yet.

Update:

I was able to get it in! I pulled the charging handle back further (as much as the gun allowed me to) as I was inserting the barrel and it clicked into place. I am not sure if that technique is known (or recommended) by M4 owners but hope it helps for those that are struggling to assemble the gun in the future.

Yes, I was most concerned with the pistons, one or both, being bent during assembly Incase the channels didn’t align correctly. When I inspected the exposed part of the pistons after it was assembled, it moved freely up and down. Although I can only see one, the left one, through the ejection port.
