M4 Ghost Load Action/Ammo

Hi guys, first post here,

Just picked up my first firearm, the M4 a couple weeks ago, had the chance to shoot it twice now, and enjoying it thoroughly :)
I'm trying to further understand the functions and operation of this thing, and I was wondering:

Pulling the trigger releases a shell from the mag tube and onto the carrier right? So when ghost loading the M4, how does it not release another round onto the carrier with the other one on there and not jam it up?

Secondly, I picked up some S&B buck that's slightly longer in overall length than 2 3/4" federal ammo I have (even though the box says 2 5/8"?), but it is shorter than 3" Federal I have. Realistically this ammo being in between 2 3/4" and 3" it should be safe to shoot, right?

Thanks for any/all help.
