skoal
I just recently purchased a SBE II and it is my first Benelli. I've been absolutely impressed with everything about the gun and the looks, and feel. But I have one major concern and I've contacted Benelli about this already but I'm not convinced this is truly the case so I'm going to ask you guys if you can help me out. Is it true that when there is a shell in the chamber of the gun and the bolt is closed, you are unable to load the magazine of the gun with more shells? I've had other guns, and talked to others about this and they all believe there maybe something wrong with my gun. Although when I called Benelli they said that this was customary with the Black Eagles! I have a hard time believing this as that is a very bad feature if this is the case. I've not heard anybody talk about this about the Black Eagles. I have even gone as far as taking it apart several times trying to figure out if there is something sticking, jamming or misaligned and I have not found anything. Please respond to this post and possible clarify this for me or help me out as I think this is a very bad feature as when I'm out duck, goose or pheasant hunting there is many times when I will need to add a single or two shells to the magazine and I don't want to open the bolt and eject the shell in the chamber to just add my additional shells. Any advice or clarification will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
threeshot
I own an SBEII and I can load shells into the magazine when the chamber is closed or loaded. Here is my loading procedure. 1) Safety first, you should have the safety engaged and the gun pointed in a safe direction when you chamber a round. This is to avoid killing/destroying something due to an accidental discharge. (Mechanical issue caused the firing pin to strike the primer versus negligent discharge caused by you pulling the trigger when you did not mean to pull the trigger.) 2) Pull the bolt back into the rearward position and let it lock in the rearward position. If the bolt does not want to lock to the rear, be sure that the red dot on the cartridge drop level is not showing by pressing it upward on the right-hand side of the trigger guard (it's the shiny metal showing at the front of the trigger guard.) 3) I drop a shot shell into the open receiver and release the bolt via the carrier control button on the right-hand side of the receiver. 4) Now I load shells into the magazine. Do not ease the bolt forward to load a shell in the chamber. I did this and I was unable to get the shell carrier to move completely downward to load shells. I was able to get about three quarters of the shell into the magazine when the shell carrier prevented me from going any further into the magazine. The solution is let the bolt slam close by pressing the special carrier control button on the right-hand side of the receiver. That solved the problem I was having getting the shell carrier to move fully downward while I was trying to load a shot shell into the magazine. If the method I described above does not work on your SBEII, I would request that the gun be returned for repairs. skoal
threeshot thanks for the reply! I appreciate the quick response to my dilemma. I did exactly what you had explained and I've done that about a hundred times before and still no such luck getting shells into the magazine. Just like you stated 'I was able to get about three quarters of the shell into the magazine when the shell carrier prevented me from going any further into the magazine', thats all that ever happens. I will give Benelli a call on Monday and ask that they repair the gun or I may just take it back to where I purchased it and see if they can get Benelli to act on this. bill77056
skoal Last season was the first for the SBE and me. I was always having problems feeding the magazine. Result as you indicate-could get the shell in part way and no further. This would be happening in the blind wearing gloves after taking one or two shots. I can't remember how I would finally get the mag charged. But I was furstrated. But, the problem dissappeared. I can't remember how or when I was able to normally insert a shell in the mag. But, I have no problems now. Maybe it was a "break-in" issue.

MagManiac
If your bolt is not locked to battery you will not be able to load to the mag. Pay attention to the extractor and make sure it rotates upward when the bolts closes, this locks the bolt into firing postition. If it is at the bottom of the channel it's not locked in. skoal
Well I sent the gun into the Service Department at Benelli and now I sit and wait patiently........ [ 10-01-2004, 04:13 PM: Message edited by: skoal ]
Drundel
Ditto MagManiac. If the bolt is not fully closed and rotated all the up, it will not let you load shells. This is a safety feature. I lost many a duck this way last year. Teach me not to clean my gun after a mud hunt.

Hooked
I used to have a similar or possibly the same problem - I could only get a shell about halfway into the mag tube before the shell carrier got in the way and the shell couldn't go any further. Here's what I figured out in my situation: When the carrier plate goes up, there is a small slot that one edge of the carrier plate slides into. My carrier plate was not perfectly centred in the receiver and did not always make its way into the slot. The slot allows the carrier plate to go up about another 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch which is just enough to let the shell go the rest of the way into the mag tube. Essentially, my shell carrier plate was bottoming out pre-maturely because it did not fit into the slot in the receiver properly and this reduced the amount of clearance necessary for the shell to go into the tube. Hope this helps. Brian
