sbeIIfan
Stupid question but, idk. With # 5 shot lead could you penatrait a turkey at around 40 yards. Not in the head but at its body? I have a bet rolling on this.
sbeIIfan
If so How far? Could it kill it?
tucker301
The chart below shows the kinetic energy of various shot sizes at various ranges. At 40 yards, #5 shot is packing around 3.5 ftlbs. of energy. I'd say that's enough to break through the feathers from the back or side, but it would be iffy on making a recoverable kill unless the spine were hit properly. Head-on, with the shedding properties of the layers of feathers, I'd say the chances are marginal. Even if the shot manage to pierce the outer layers, there's a lot of breast meat and bone protecting the vitals. More than likely, you'd end up with a wounded bird that would be difficult to recover. CraigL
I think you're gonna loose the bet. Hevi-Shot at 1300 fps maybe.
Liberty or death Jr.
Maybe the Nitro 4x5x7s in #4 shot. I guess they go through 3/4 inch of plywood at 40 yards. I don't know if it would make it to the vitals of a turkey. The T shot dead coyote I used would, went clean through him.
