Which Benelli is right for me?

Hi I would very much value some input! I do not own anything as of yet, have been considering a shotgun for quite awhile now and Benelli is the #1 recommendation i keep getting. When I found two intruders in my home on Monday, I decided I should stop considering a shotgun and actually go buy one. My shortlist is: Supernova (price, after all an intruder doesn't care how much the gun costs and rave reviews), Ultralight (because I am 5'3" 130lbs) and the Cordoba (not that much heavier and damn what a pretty gun!) I figure if I go cheap the gun will just sit in the safe for a bad bad day as opposed to the other two that would push me to go shooting more often, I'd feel guilt buying such a pretty gun and never using it. I will not be shooting anything living (unless they are in my home), I fear recoil (which is one reason I chose Benelli to begin with), and once I leave Chicago (proper) I will probably start collecting so I wouldn't mind a gun that more or less holds its value. I also wouldn't mind a gun that my bf would not be embarrassed borrowing when he does go hunting (he is not a fan of shotguns). Any and all thoughts are appreciated!

Go to a store and try shouldering a few and ask if they have the short stock 20 Ga pump nova, see which one ya like cause their is no return on guns! Sorry to hear about the losses but atleast they did not mess with you! Would also say an alarm system for the house would be nice and do not expect responce time from Police to be very fast, i set mine off and it was 45 minutes from time it went off to the time they showed! But the sign in the front of the house seems to have done its job so far cause the alarm got cancled! But quality Floor Gun Safe keeps my stuff safe and my 38 +P comes to befroom with me every evening along with an extra speed loader!:D Would have been easier to post Scott on the corner with his 308 but they are crack dealers and he would run outta ammo too quick:D Sportmans Warehouse is a good place to fit a gun if ya have one near by, and they have real good selections of Benelli's!

I have an alarm system (which I had foolishly off at the time) and 3 German Shepherds. 1 is a sissy and the other 2 are fairly well titled attack dogs, needless to say these guys didn't take anything as I caught them scaling a wall (5 stories high, they said they were window washers that accidentally came into my courtyard, the issue being there are no windows on that condo building and there was no reason to enter my home). Had the dogs and myself chase them out, the police where here in 3 minutes, though to late to catch them. I got overly protective of my girls (they are both pregnant) and my bf ripped me a new one for not having a gun at the ready in the house and sending the girls to attack (I kept them behind me protecting the puppies). Actually pretty much everyone ripped me a new one on those accounts. I saw them scaling the wall and entering the house, I was simply lucky that they did not have guns as my yelling is not that scary :-) So a friend is lending me a non-pregnant attack dog and I'll be buying both a shotgun and a rifle for my man (out of guilt). My camera system is down, so have that being repaired this weekend...gosh I sound insane...I live in a very posh section of town and its not uncommon that the homes here get targeted unnecessarily. I'd just rather shoot than deal with insurance. One would think the 3 signs that say "warning attack dogs on premises" and the constant barking at people at my door would scare off even the most adventurous. You cannot underestimate stupidity :-)

Thanks for the suggestion on Sportsman's Warehouse I will google them.

I love my Ultralight....in fact, I am seriously considering picking up a second, however, I might caution that it may not be the gun for someone who does not like recoil.

It is wonderfully light, and easily carried. It has a beautiful stock, and I really don't see it loosing much value. As a matter of fact, if the dollar keeps tanking, it will probably be worth more in a few years than what you give for it now.

Now, as for recoil, with light loads it isn't bad. If you plan to just shoot skeet/coke cans, you will be fine. If you plan to duck hunt with 3" steel, or run any buck or heavy rounds through it, it pops rather smartly. If you plan on using it for self defense, you should practice with some heavy stuff occasionally. Short brass 8's are not what I want to use on 2 legged vermin.

My 11yr old son loves the M2 Field in 20 ga, and he doesn't like the UL. He likes to shoot it so much, I can't keep and 20ga shells around here any more!!

Sorry to ramble.

Doc

To be honest, I would, if I were you, look into other brands, as they do not really support additional barrells for their guns very much...in fact...in my case...not at all...and it is a brand new gun...an m2 field with the APG...stay away from it...they dont have any of their barrells even manufactured yet...they actually bring products to market and do not have the line figured out...most retailers are actually steering people away due to its lack of response..and proactiveness to support the Benelli Bedazzled with the Benelli Buls@#@!

Good grief.

Now that all the parties have settled down here is a link to a simioar site on Shotgunworld about the ultralight.

http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=121356

Check out the posts by a person that goes by jugchoke. He is pretty jazzed about his and his wifes Ultra Lights.

I would take the rantings of birdman70 with a grain of salt right now. Hew is a little POed about a gun he bought.

Hopefully that will give you some more perspective on these guns. Along with this sspost there is a lot of good information on the Benelli guns at that web site as well.

Good luck and guard those puppies.

Mike

just doing my job to question what the person is buying...and making them aware of the barrell situation...again...it is a good gun..but just don't expect to have additional barrells for the gun within your lifetime..if you want it as a keepsake....and a gun to pass on to those children or grandchildren..they may get what you thought u were getting ..additional barrells...because they may be ready by then....but ...the gun u have now..it is a good gun....

If you would have called Brownells like Benelli C/S told ya to this might not be such of an issue for yourself. 45 days is a lifetime?

Thanks for everyone's thoughts! My bf bought for me a Nova 18" H2O which was easy to handle and happened to have been in stock at the store (otherwise the super would have come home) and when I touched the Cordoba it was love at first sight, (the outstanding price was pretty sweet too) so i impulsively bought that as well! Now I cannot wait to go out and practice.

Just a quick question, what's going on in Chicago that it has such crazy criminals in it? You'd have to be a real drugged out nut to go scaling walls into a compound guarded by attack dogs and people with guns willing to use them. Sometimes I'm glad I live in the frozen north where the most dangerous things are polar bears. Good luck, let us know what happens. It sounds intense. (ps. I have no idea, but what kind of ammo would you use for a home defense shotgun?)

Hog, I'm a girl. It's never enough chocolate ice cream or guns, smile.

I don't know what is up around here. It started with a freakish employee who was caught in my home doing all sorts of nasties and when he got fired he started stalking me...hence the Shutzhund dogs and barbed wire. Cops said get a gun and I thought "gosh barbed wire, dogs AND a gun seems pretty extreme" Who knew? Lunatics climbing down a 5 story wall midday?! Its an expensive neighborhood and I think people assume we all have more money than we do. I just cannot imagine any amount of money or jewelry being worth enough to risk getting eaten and shot.

If anyone knows a place near Chicago that will let me target practice with an 18" shotgun, by all means let me know; it would be nice to play a bit before I ever need it to protect myself.

I had so much fun gun shopping I bought my boyfriend a rifle (I think I felt badly since I suddenly owned 2 guns and he only owned 1) If this addiction keeps up I'll need a few more gun recommendations in a few months, huge smile.

Hey sounds like your BF is doing ok!! Maybe he needs to get some defense rounds and NVG's or some dogs that do not bark and only eat! I would put them in the house and have them attack trained, amazing what Drugs will make people do. They only want something they can sell fast and cheap maybe put some cameras up or alarm in house or both. but do not wait for police if it goes off, took them 45 minutes to get to my house when my alarm went off, just a false alarm but they could have gotten everything if it had been a real burglar! anyone looking for something in my house will have to contend with 00 buckshot and a 38 Special i shoot pretty well after 20 years in Military! I know you are female but AMMO is still way more important than ice cream, like my Filipina wife likes shoes i like AMMO!! if ya aint got it what will ya do when the SHTF!! Cold Stone is open but not 24/7:D

My favorite quotes:

I carry a gun because I can't carry a cop.

When seconds count, cops are minutes away.

Anyone know when the Supreme Court gonna rule on the DC gun ban?(yeah I know, another off topic post)

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

You cannot go wrong with the ultralight, you didnt mention 12 or 20 gauge though. If recoil has you thinking, you may want to try a 20, with the right choke and ammo it will take out anything flying, except maybe long range geese, and even 3 inch 20 gauge shells arent that bad. I may suggest a micro light made by a company with a deer head for a logo, my wife loves hers and its about 400$ less than a benelli.
