Cleaning the Pistons on a Benelli M4 with Midwest Industries Handguard

Hello,

maybe someone here can help me:

I have a Benelli M4 with the M-LOK handguard from Midwest Industries. Since I shoot at least 100 rounds per week at steel targets with the shotgun, I would actually like to clean the piston system from time to time. The problem is that it is not accessible with the Midwest Industries handguard installed.

So my question is: Is it even necessary to clean the piston system? Supposedly it is “self-cleaning”… is that true? I’ve usually cleaned it every 1,000 rounds or so.

Is there any way to access it without completely disassembling the handguard?

Thanks in advance...😊
