Keep in mind that it is designed to be loaded with 3 in the mag and the bolt back. We are cheating by putting the extra round in the pipe. Mine is tight and it does take quite a bit of added force to get it to lock in. As Tucker said a nice hard slap with the palm does the trick. The 300 WM is a big case and 3 really compresses the magazine spring.

Hey Al,
All these were done at 100 yards. Will move out to 200 once I'm happy with a load. Then on to the long range dial in. After I shot I come back and cleaned my R-1 as always, then I looked down the barrel with my new borescope to see how my cleaning went. WOW, it looked like a copper mine in there. I spent 2 more hours getting all the copper fouling out of the barrel. That borescope will tell if you are cleaning good enough or not. Glad I bought it, it sure will help me check new guns as well as keep my barrels nice and clean.

It warmed up here today so I decided to head to the range to try some hand loads. I loaded these using RCBS small base dies. I got the best groups with 69 grains of IMR 4831 with the Barnes 180 grain TSX BT. I did have some promising groups with a Nosler 180 grain Spt Bt Ballistic Tip with 73.5 grains of ReLoader22. I Might try the ReLoader22 with the TSXs next.
Fired over 40 rounds of hand loaded ammo without a single malfunction, the EZ trigger is helping as well.

Yea it is really EZ to install, just takes a minute or two. Uses a simple cam and lever system to reduce trigger pull. Works nice, just have to deal with it on the trigger guard. Plus you can flip it forward out of the way and not use it if you want.

Mine still shots good, just got to know how to try her right. All three groups were fired one after the other with no more than 10 seconds between shots. Cleaned after each group. Also adjusted the scope after each group.

Got my R-1 barrel coated with BLACKICE and replaced my scope mounts with a pair of Warne Rings. Decided to try the EZ pull trigger assist to get my trigger down to a better level. Went to the range today and resighted my scope. Like the EZ trigger after I got used to it, seems that I got better groups. Worth a try, cheaper than a trip to a smith. Happy Shooting.

I'm not a gimmick guy, but I put one of these on my R-1 after I had the trigger worked by a smith. He got the trigger down to about 4 lbs. However I really like a light trigger. The EZ pull looks a little odd on the trigger guard but it does lower your pull by over 50% using simple leverage. Check it out, I'm posting a link to their page, but Cabela's has them cheaper and you can send it back free if you are unhappy.

Check out this thread about the piston trouble. Can't remember exactly how many rounds I put thru it. I do shoot quite a bit. The problem seems to be that the built up carbon holds moisture and the two together work fast. I noticed that my new piston rings would foul and rust quickly. That has been my experience. Like anything mechanical it has pros and cons. For me the light recoil and quick handling make up for a little extra cleaning. I did over 20 years in the military and cleaning your weapon after each operation was just a way of life. Good Luck

Yes, live in the Interior. The winters are hard but the summers makeup for it.

In my experience the barrel nut needs to be torqued all the way down. If the bolt is failing to close, staying about an inch from closing all the way. When mine does this it is fouled in the gas piston rings were they fit into the barrel. Try to remove the barrel and clean the piston and torque the barrel nut down all the way. With the bolt locked back the gas piston should move freely in the receiver.
This is a pic of mine you can see the corrosion on the piston under the rings this caused the piston to bind in the barrel.

2 things that I did to improve groups.
#1 had the trigger worked!!!!!
#2 make sure that the barrel nut is tightened all the way down.
I use Federal Premium 180 grain Barnes TSX, when my rifle is zeroed with these and I shot remington fusions I can't even put them on the paper. Load the TSXs back up and back to less than MOA. Try a box of these.
Have someone try it.

After 20 plus years in the Army, I retired and now let the wife bring home the bacon. She lets me use my pension to get out enjoy Alaska. So as long as my health holds I will keep chasing these critters with my R-1. Have my R-1 taken apart right now. Having the barrel teflon coated. New set of warne rings and I'm going to try an EZ pull trigger device. I had my trigger polished, but I like a lite trigger. Will post some pics when I get it back together.

I thought that he said that he bought it from benelli. I would call customer support and explain your issue and ask if you could buy the newer stock and fore grip. Worth a try anyway. Or sell it and buy a new one, I have become attached to mine and really like it. It is just like some women I have know and loved, has some faults but overall she gets the job done.

Not sure about the camo stock, but I have seen others change the stocks from their Argos to make them comfortechs.

lock the bolt to the rear.
insert loaded magazine
pull bolt to the rear and release
this will load a round
at this point you can hunt with what is in the mag or drop it and insert an additional round.
Please keep the rifle on safe during all handling and keep the rifle muzzle in a safe direction.
Mine will both load from the magazine and stay open with an empty magazine. You may have a bad magazine or something wrong with the bolt lock.

I have shot about every brand in 300 win mag. By far the best shooting and performing for me has been FEDERAL PREMIUM VITAL-SHOK WITH BARNES 180 grain TSX. I have taken most Alaskan game with this combo. Longest shot being on a Dall Sheep Ram shot at 400 yards. Check out my what have you shot thread.
This is a photo of my Barnes TSX after it went through both moose shoulder blades and remained just under the skin on the far side after a 325 yard shot.

Well I guess you and I will have to go after a couple new photo opportunities. My next hunt will be either some winter predator calling. then a spring bear hunt down in PWS. The wife and I are going to try for another Dahl sheep this next year. Hope my body holds up. Good Luck and Thanks again.

Thanks Parachute, I would like to take the time to thanks you for your service during Vietnam. I'm a veteran as well, having done my time in Iraq. So thanks to all the vets out there. I too would like to see some other R-1 owners post what they have bagged as well. Here is a photo of me and Oliver North taken during a operations order brief for a mission to get Saddam's sons.

I installed one of these to try to lower my trigger pull. I got around to putting the trigger scale on it. I had my trigger polished by a gunsmith and got it down to 5 lbs. Not bad but I like my triggers around 3 lbs. I saw this EZ trigger and thought that I would give it a try. It brought my trigger pull down to right at 1 lb. It uses simple leverage and does not make your trigger unsafe. I nice little gadget for a rifle like the R-1 that has a trigger that can only be lowered a small amount and still be safe.
