Monte--No 3rd Shot!?!

Hello,

 

I shoot a 20 ga. Montefeltro, (bought new, used 4 seasons, upland, rarely in rain)usually using non-premium (Estate) high-base No. 6 loads.

 

Last season, my 3rd round wouldn't chamber, and sometimes my 2nd wouldn't either.

 

I've field-stripped and oiled where I thought I should several times. Does this mean my mag spring needs replacing?

 

And, is this best left to a 'smith because I read the thread about being careful, padded vise, headspacing, etc....

What do you mean by not chambering exactly? Does the shell not come out of the magazine tube or is it getting stuck on the shell carrier or something else?

Thanks, sorry--the shell hangs up down on the carrier--and isn't brought up into the chamber.

Have you tried cycling shells/snap caps through manually to see if you can spot the hangup?

 

I would be really surprised if the magazine spring was the issue but you could make sure that the follower slides easily in the mag to cover all the bases.

I have a similar problem shooting trap with my M2. When I load a shell into the chamber, I have to be sure and leave it in the chamber, and not resting at the bottom of the receiver. If I do, the shell will hang up. I do not have this problem with doubles or multiple rounds.

No, haven't 20 ga. snap caps. But I'll go down to my neighbor's, who has a reloader, and make up some dummy shells and try that. Thanks.
