Barrel lengths

Is there any difference in performance between barrel lengths? I always thought a long barrel like a 32 incher would have more velocity and distance and a shorter barrel like a 22 incher would have larger patterns and less velocity because it burned less powder in the barrel. I heard the 26 incher got the maximum velocity, full powder burn and good distance. Have I heard wrong?

Thank you Tucker, My question is answered. One thing he didn't answer though is velocity and power. I am sure there isn't really any difference though.

Modern powders will attain maximum velocity in shorter barrells.

This is not true with rifles, but with shotguns there is very little difference in velocity between a 24" barrell and a 30".
