  1. Thanks guys! I'm not sure what I'll use it for yet but I'm thinking it's sole purpose is going to be a porch gun - tormenting gophers, chipmunks, cow birds, crows and the occasional racoon or opossum that deems it necessary to harass the dogs and tear apart the garbage.

I shot 150 rounds this morning w/o a glitch.... really operates smoothly on follow-ups for being a new gun. I think as soon as she's 'broke-in' she'll be even better. Now all I have to do is drop it in the mud, dip it in the water a couple ten times, and knock it against everything imaginable so it doesn't look so **** new yet. Looks too new and pretty yet ... no 'character'.

For you other Nova owners - I installed 2 strips of 3m velcro tape along the bottom of the barrel where the slide rides beneath to quiet the gun down and it works great.

  2. While passing a marsh down the road from my place this morning on the way to work I saw my first hatch of Mallards this spring. About 6-8 ducklings following suzie out from the cattails @ 7:15am. Made my day! Hopefully it will be the first of many in the next month to come. I've already seen a few vandalised nests but, hopefully the hens will try another crack at nesting yet. The Drake Mallards and Woodys are still 'Hot -n- bothered' by the hens yet in the area.

    Anyone else seen anything?

  3. With Sabots what your doing is creating 'twist' or spin to the projectile. With-out getting technical - the spin created by the rifling in the 'slug' barrel improves accuracy and keeps the Sabot slug from tumbling. Sort of relate this to a knuckle-ball in baseball. This is why they mold rifling into slugs for smooth bores.

15 boxes of slugs ... i'm thinkin' 5 per box right?? burn 'em up - just make sure to clean her up good afterwards.

    have a good one

  4. Not that I've got something against the .410 guys - I have three of them but they don't get used at all anymore. Justly so, where I'm coming from here is that my grandmother used a SxS Ithaca for grouse, pheasants, woodcock, ducks and even geese back in the day and to say that 3+ shots are needed out of a .410 auto-loader just doesn't make too much sense to me. In manufacturing and sales terms I think that the maketability of .410 would be slight at best even though some of us want to see one on the rack ... like I stated before I'd love to see a 28ga. (and a 20ga.) on the SBE frame but the reality of it gets lost somewhere between here and there ..

still think the 10ga. is a great idea too.

    for what its worth..

  5. fishmax2 -

Taken from the Benelli 'FAQ' page:

    -------

Q: What choke should I use for slugs?

A: A Cylinder choke is recommended for shooting rifled slugs in a smooth bore barrel. Sabot slugs should be shot through our fully-rifled slug barrels.

I'd have the idiot pay for it bud ... Heck, you'ld probably be better off buying a new gun when you look at the cost of a new barrel.

    Good luck

  6. Porting, when done correctly, is a true form of reducing muzzle rise and reducing felt recoil. As I can attest to having more than a couple barrels ported. Yes - The noise is increased a bit in the sharpness 'crack' of the gun but this is what they make hearing protection for and if you're shooting anything you should be using it.. shorten the barrel of your waterfowl gun and you'll notice it in the blind too.

  7. no prob shell waster - master I'm not .. just a fool with a love for the outdoors i guess ... my ex-wife called it a sickness if i remember right - hence the pre-fix 'ex'.

bwnr - Ballistic Products Inc. has a Hevi-Shot manual and Re-loading Specialties Inc. has a recipe book too that is a bit more simple (and less expensive) to use because they use the same primer, powder and wad for all their Hevi-Shot loads. I think both are @ $10.

*A little tip* try the 2-3/4" loads first ... you'll be politely suprised at the results and if you find a load you like there you'll wonder why they're making a 3-1/2" hull!!

    good luck

  8. Hi fishmax2 - What is back boring?

Back boring is the machining process of reaming or boring. A back bored shotgun barrel simply means that the bore has been altered/machined to a larger inside diameter. Backboring does -beyond any doubt- add to more wider center mass and will help reduce the length of shot strings. If done properly and wad gas seals are still maintained, by decreasing the resistance of the bigger bore you will get an increase in velocity.

    hope this helps

  9. You're killin' me Drundel!! that was good ... I do agree though! A 67ga. in an auto-loader is a bit rediculous (in my humble opinion). I think a 28ga. offered in one of the auto designs would be a breath of fresh air to their line-up.

Heck, a 10ga. would suit plenty of situations ... especially when considering guys that are overloading their 12ga. bores with a ton of shot packed into a 3-1/2" mortar round.

  10. Hi John. The best Benelli is the one that FITS! The two guns you're inquiring about are dimensionally 'set-up' different and the Legacy is about a half-pound heavier than the Montefeltro. throw that M-1 into the mix then you have three very capable 20ga. guns ... but they're very different from each other.

get into a gunshop that has these guns in-stock (barrel length too) and pick-up/hold/shoulder and swing each one ... fit and feel are the most important factors when purchasing a shotgun.

I don't mean to open another can of worms but, try out Beretta's 391 series 20's also. Franchi 620 & 720 models too

  11. Shell Waster - 20ga. / #2 Hevi-Shot is available in factory loaded 3" 1-1/4oz. & 1-1/8oz. loads. I don't think Remington offers them but, I know that Environmetal/Hevi-Shot does. I tried both out on white geese a few years ago and my eyebrows raised after knocking a few down on long range pokes. I reload both 4's and 2's in 12ga. and 20ga. for ducks and geese now days. Stick with the Hevi-Shot loads (my opinion) they're the best 20ga. factory load out there for waterfowl.

    here's the purchasing link http://www.hevishot.com/shopping/20g.html

  12. Hi Chemo - as you see in the pic they're contoured to better fit 'the pocket' of your chest and shoulder..

I've shouldered all the right handed versions but have had no reason to hold a lefty so I couldn't say anything on the difference. If need be you could order the left pad -or- swap it out for an after market... just a thought

  13. AWESOME!! Glad to here you got it ... Great price too!!... did I happen to mention my brokerage fee?? -kidding- Glad I was able to help.

Let me know how the transaction goes and when you recieve it. Also, throw some input up on the board as to how it shoots and handles recoil comparerd to the old design. I'm sure folks here would love to hear more!!

    Congrats again! Good Luck!

(oops - what I meant was 'west' of Detroit... east puts you in Lake St. Claire or in Ontario...pardon that)

  14. Did you try Galyan's outside of Detroit in Novi? I think it's east @ 30-45 min or so...

  15. On the average velocities increase 5-6fps per inch of barrel resulting in a 20-24fps increase when going from a 24" to a 28" barrel generally effecting patterns and increasing lethality... whether he's full of it or not depends on Clair Rees' definition of 'significantly'. The 24" barrel will also produce more muzzle rise making follow-up shots more difficult.

    From Benelli Troubleshooting Page:

    ---

NOTE: Due to the fact that Benelli uses an inertia recoil operating system, modifications such as backboring, porting, and lengthening the forcing cone have a detrimental effect on cycling.

    ---

..having this in mind then considering the new SuperSport uses the inertia design along with a ported barrel makes me think that the spring set-up is lighter than the SBE making it a bit more apt to handle the porting modification with lighter loads... just my thought there. As for the ability of the SBE to cycle correctly when using higher reving loads if the barrel was to be ported... I don't know for sure but, the ability to shoot lighter loads might be jeopardized.

Have you handled the gun yet or did you order the gun based on printed type? because it's going to handle much different than the two guns you mentioned above and will even handle differently between barrel lengths.

    Good Luck

  16. ?? Don't know the answer to that one - fit

& feel? ... I do know that Tiger Woods didn't sign with Nike for the shoes, hats and clubs....
