  1. Haven't tried them, but was wondering, will the M-1 super 90 run the reduced recoil 2 3/4 slug slugs on the market today. I have shot lots of std velocity slugs, but not the reduced recoil. Anyone know or, what low recoil slugs generally won't run...

    thanks

I am testing the Federal 3 1/2 mag #5 2 1/4 oz Flite control load in my Nova and to date chokes more open than the .665 haven't patterned as well as the .665

I did try a .675 and the .665 is working better.

I intend to try tighter than .665 and compare but haven't gotten to it yet.

And I probably will polish one of the chokes and just see what that does, for the heck of it. I have had that work better in one of my guns.....but I guess, as a person would suspect....trial and on paper with what ever combination will show what works with a particular gun.

I don't think it's ever wrong to suggest trying some different things and who knows.....just might work in a particular gun. Thanks for suggesting what you did.....it's worth a try with the Flite control .

  3. Stamped right on your barrel. On the underside, you will see a number stamped which is millimeters. Simply convert that to inches. In my case it is stamped 18.4 which converts to .724408 or, .724 to .725 ish.

Nominal 12 gauge is .729 or 18.5 millimeters.

I had heard that the Benelli's run just a little to the tighter side and so it seems.

    Answered my own question.....:)

  4. I looked through all the posts discussing chokes etc., but I didn't see any bore diameter listed for the standard 12ga. Nova bore.

Could be, that it is standard for most of the Benelli's or....not, but I don't know.

I would like to figure my percent reduction with the chokes I use so.....if anyone knows what standard bore diameter for the Nova is.....please holler.

    thanks

  5. Really, it is probably more a matter of how well you shoot and what you use for your field shooting positions and how good (steady, consistent) your shots are that determines any meaningful difference between the smooth bore and the rifled. That you can shoot the rifled bore slightly more accurately off a shooting bench does not mean that you will do so in the field so....any meaningful difference between the smooth bore and rifled in all reality may mean all but nothing. If you test your accuracy targeting (shooting from)your probable type of field shooting positions, this will tell you more than anything else. We spend a lot of time talking accuracy between the two barrel types but reality is, that both are as often as not, very similar in terms of just how well you can hit what you are shooting at, in the general area you are trying to hit. I own three fast twist rifled barrel guns and five smooth bores and it's more a matter of a slightly improved trajectory with the sabot rounds vs the Brenneke type load, than anything else but again, the vast majority of the time, the differences haven't really matter much in the field.

One thing to remember that you get with the smooth bore is versatility......way more. The cost of the sabot rounds is quite a bit more on the whole ....AND I can use buckshot for home defense and Wally World bird shot ....to practice. So, the cost of running a smoothbore, and the fun factor absolutely goes..... to the smooth bore.

And the four Benelli's (three Nova's and a M1 Super 90) I have are all smooth bores which shoot slugs great, buckshot great, and birdshot by the bucket. three of my Benelli's are tactically oriented and one, is actually a dedicated bird gun for Turkey and what not.

  6. The Brenneke Black Magic loads are very good. I have used them a great deal in my Benelli Nova tactical, and they shoot great plus, a harder lead slug is used and for penetration at angle on game, this is your best shot. I mostly use their 1/3/8 oz loading and I don't intend to use much else.

A serious hunting slug load especially for smooth bores.
