  1. $7.00 per round? Man, I thought quality 308 ammo was expensive.

I would also have concerns trying to justify my ammo selection to a jury in the very unfortunate case I had to use these rounds for HD/SD.

That said, they look like they're well engineered and manufactured. Interesting design.

    YMMV, of course.

Glad I live in Texas with a strong Castle Law.

  2. I got the mesa tactical for my supernova...it's nice but my only complaint is that damn rubber tension thing wears out and the shells loosen over time

My side saddle has a nylon (?) shaft (for lack of a better term) that can be replaced when it wears out, they even sent a spare with my order.

  3. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but what do you guys recommend for side saddles when using the scalarworks rail? I have used the Mesa side saddles before but I could not find a side saddle for the M4 that didn't have a top rail.

    Thanks

I just cut the rail segment off, and then cut a U shaped segment out of the Mesa Side-Saddle.

  4. This is the letter I received from the BATFE

The first part is generic in nature:

This is in reference to your inquiry to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Firearms Technology Industry Services Branch (FTISB), concerning the lawfulness, based on the amended Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA), 18 U.S.C. § 922®, of increasing the magazine capacity on a Benelli M4 shotgun or replacing the fixed shoulder stock with a Benelli “telescoping stock assembly”; further, you ask FTISB to confirm the additional number of U.S.-made parts needed to satisfy compliance under §922®.

The GCA, § 922®, prohibits assembly of certain semiautomatic rifles and shotguns from imported parts. Also, the implementing regulations contained in 27 CFR § 478.39 include the stipulation that "no person shall assemble a semiautomatic rifle or any shotgun using more than 10 of certain imported parts, if the assembled firearm is prohibited from importation under 18 U.S.C. § 925(d)(3) as not being particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes."

    These parts are as follows:

    (1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings, or castings.

    (2) Barrels.

    (3) Barrel extensions.

    (4) Mounting blocks (trunnions).

    (5) Muzzle attachments.

    (6) Bolts.

    (7) Bolt carriers.

    (8) Operating rods.

    (9) Gas pistons.

    (10) Trigger housings.

    (11) Triggers.

    (12) Hammers.

    (13) Sears.

    (14) Disconnectors.

    (15) Buttstocks.

    (16) Pistol grips.

    (17) Forearms, handguards.

    (18) Magazine bodies.

    (19) Followers.

    (20) Floor plates.

The second part pertains to the M4:

To illustrate the application of these restrictions, a shotgun having a magazine capacity of more than five shells is prohibited from importation under 18 U.S.C. § 925(d)(3) since it fails to meet sporting firearms criteria. Therefore, it is a violation of § 922® to assemble such a shotgun from more than 10 of the imported parts specified in § 478.39. However, assembly of certain semiautomatic rifles or shotguns using 10 or fewer of these imported parts is not prohibited under this section.

With regard to extending the magazine capacity, in order to qualify as a U.S. replacement part, the entire magazine tube would have to be replaced. A U.S.-made magazine extension would not count as a replacement part.

Note, that when equipped with the standard buttstock or the fixed pistol-grip buttstock assembly (see enclosed diagram), the Benelli M4 shotgun contains the following parts from the list presented above:

    1. Receiver.

    2. Barrel.

    3. Bolt.

    4. Bolt carrier.

    5. Gas piston(s).

    6. Trigger housing.

    7. Trigger.

    8. Hammer.

    9. Disconnector.

    10. Buttstock.

    11. Forearm(s).

    12. Magazine body.

    13. Follower.

  5. If you're the type that actually uses the safety, then it is a worthwhile upgrade. Being able to disengage the safety with your trigger finger without breaking your firing grip is a huge improvement. Basically you can feel the nub poking into your trigger finger if the safety is engaged. Pressing the safety inward with the inside of your trigger finger around the second knuckle is nice. Sometimes you have to modify the spring weight slightly to make it a little easier to press.

They're all pretty similar in design, but I like the shape of the DMW a little better than the TTI one.

The safety is kind of a PITA to change without the proper tools.

    Who is DMW?

  6. What was the question you asked them?

Give me a parts list for the M4. I saw two letters posted and they were different, so I wanted a letter from BATFE in case anyone had questions.

FWIW- The letter posted on the Freedom Fighter Tactical web page is good, as my Lawyer says it establishes precedent.

I'll post my letter as a sticky next week when I get back.

  7. Neat. Interested to see how it comes out in the end. You did well cutting the rail. Any concern with the rear vestigial portion of the rail obstructing the view of the rmr?

Any reason you didn't just use a 3 gun gear Velcro card system?

I already had the side saddle, used parts don't hold value so we figured cutting it was no different than selling at 50% or less.

    Test fit of the RMR.

  8. excellent write up. I too plan on doing the same Gunsight courses. I just got the FFT charging handle and was noticing that it does remove very easily, thinking I will look into a different handle as I expect that I will experience the same issue once running the gun harder than a few rounds at the range. If anyone has opinions on a better charging handle alternative hopefully you can post up here with real world experience..

    GG&G charging handle.

  9. Thanks.

I am swapping an Insight (now someone else) MRDS for the Trijicon RMR with the Scalarworks mount. I plan on cutting the rail portion of the mount off and cutting part of my (GG&G) side saddle off to run the gun that way.

  10. Know I have to remember if I have the FFT or GG&G Charging Handle.

    How was the course itself?

?eta: I have the GG&G, I wonder if it would have the same issues.

  11. Distance you'll be shooting from?

I just swapped an Insight MRDS (can't remember who bought them out) for the Trijicon RMR. I like to shoot co-witness and the Trijicon/Scalar works combo is ideal (for me).

Red dot MOA becomes a factor depending on distance too.
