I am an expert on the M3.
Benellioni-If you are going to shoot skeet with the M3 I suggest you order the model with open sights. The rear ghost ring sight is ATTACHED TO THE RECEIVER.I dont know how it is held on.Might be welded or maybe just screws but you would have to remove it every time you went clay shooting, unless you dont mind a big hunk of metal in your sight picture.I bought the open sighted model because I knew this would be a problem.I shoot skeet every week and Im glad I bought the open sights.
I dont know why the open sights cost more.I had always thought it was a typo in the catalog.
Steve-Most of these local gun dealers are puffy chested morons. They would rather give you bad information than admit they haven't done their homework.I got the same kind of information when I was shopping for my M3.Its hard to believe that these people actually get paid to spout their b.s.But anway,The M3 is most definately convertible.
If you want to demonstrate the pump action in a shop you need to load a few dummy rounds in the magazine so that you can properly cyle the action a few times. If you dont load the dummy rounds you have to first pull back the forend,it locks back, then you have to push the carrier release button ,then you can return the forend to original position. Its a very clunky procedure without the dummy rounds.
This shotgun is not for most people.Everyone says it is too complicated, and that is the reason I bought it.I like complexity.
I havent had much luck with the lighter target loads when shooting clays.I can shoot about 30-50 rounds in the auto mode and then it fails to eject the rounds.Thats when I convert it to pump and finish the day shooting in pump mode.I still think its not broken in yet so maybe it will cycle reliably in the future.
(Benelli recommends full power loads to reliably cycle the action, but who wants to shoot 00 buck at a clay target)
I hope this might answer some questions. When I was researching this gun I got the typical answers"too complicated",or "just get an M1".
I think the M3 is the most under rated shotgun in the entire Benelli line.Be sure to get the tactical barrel and the 26" barrel and you will have a selection of OPTIONS that the other benelli models cant provide.
