My son is 10 yrs old i want to get him started on a centerfire rifle. my first choice was a 243 but i'm wondering if a 270 would make a better long term investment. What is the difference in recoil between the two?

I had a chance to try the SBEII out again on sun. This time i took a 20lb gobbler at 40 paces with fed. prem. #4's did a real nice job at that range also 1 1/4 hooks on this bird 3 year old most likley. I have always used #6 shot but the 4's work good out of this gun with the factory full in it i'll stick with them.

I shot an 18lb two year old on fri. It was my first bird with my SBEII 3.5inch fed prem. #4 copper plated about 25 yards, used the factory choke tube. Needless to say i didn't have to get up to run over to it.

I was using the full choke that came with the gun. Just used 2 3/4 assorted shells i never get fancey when i go for crows the shots were 40 to 45 yards crows are easy to kill. I dont own a owl decoy, but i have hunted with guys that do they seem to work when used with the crow and owl fight tape. I have the best luck with fighting crows and crow distress i also use a moth call. It is best to keep switching between all of them. [ 03-11-2006, 03:39 PM: Message edited by: 420W ]

They felt real good till they hit the ground. I had my caller crow decoys and an old red "T" shirt (looks like blood) works every time. I like to watch them torpedo into a snow drift at 40 mph.

I had the chance to use my SBEII today, I went after some crows the gun worked very well and the recoil wasn't noticable at all. So far i'm pleased with it.

I hit all 10 but that gun was no SBEII.

Chris, It is my humble opinion that if you want a 22cal buy just that i have an older colt huntsman the ruger would be similar to that. If it a 1911 your looking for i would say get it in 45 ACP you can buy ammo cheap and there a lot of fun to shoot. I have a springfield fully loaded 1911 it is by far my favorite hand gun. there is just somthing about the 45 auto that i like and i assume many others like about them. I think the 22 convertions are a bit on the heavy side try them out and see for yourself to be certain.

If your a pump man i would go with rem's 870 it's a good no nonsense gun comes up good for most people i know. I like an auto mine is a browning gold in 20ga full rifled cantalever scope mount. I know you said 12 but i would put my 20 against any 12ga. Not cheap i have $1,000 into mine with the scope, ammo cost is higher for sabot slugs but worth it to me. Just my two cents

The TC Encore would make a good slug gun i have the 209/50 also. I like the 20ga because of the low recoil and is very accurate for a slug gun. I know some guys with 12ga of various makes and they seem to shoot just as well as my 20 personal choice i would guess. I like the autoloader because of the follow up shots at moving deer in the heavy cover we have in this area. A singleshot makes a good stand gun and is alot cheaper than mine.

Butch-M The gun is a Browning Gold in 20ga,fully rifled barrel with a leupold 2-7 power shotgun scope. I was shooting Winchester partition gold sabot slugs 2 3/4 inch with a 260gr. nozler bullet traveling at 1900fps. The stalk took place in mid morning the first time i jumped him i never saw him i just heard his rack hitting the tag alders he was in. I saw what he was the third time i jumped him but had no shot the forth time i jumped him he was behind a large blowdown, had he ran the way he started to i would not have had a shot. But for some reason he turned and broke into the open woods my shots were at about 50 to 70 yards running he was quartered away just right. I always keep my scope set to 2 power just in case this type of shot is all i can get. More good luck than anything else but i'll take that any day of the week.

Are extened chokes realy that much better than the factory chokes? The browning gold i had was tight with the full choke but i had to build a better mouse trap.I tried a comp&choke XXX full it worked good but i thought it was a little to tight had some misses on close range turkeys. With my new SBEII im going to stick with the full that it came with (for now ).

FN_FAL, Thank you it is my best buck to date. I have over 30 years invested in this one. Yes he was hit behind the front sholder ijumed him in a thick swamp and followed his tracks for over 2 1/2 hours. I jumped him three more times after that i was able to get 3 shots at him on the last time i jumped him hit him twice he only went 20 yards after that. As far as the tractor goes it was a real life saver seeing it would have been a 1 1/2 mile drag over plowed ground not a good thing.
