super 90 means the shotgun is equiped with the montefeltro rotating bolt and inertia spring action,,which was developed in 1983 and produced as early as 1986,,and the rest of the 80s and into the 90s,,,super means its a far superior engineering over the pre 85 bolt design.8 shot means the weapon can hold 8 ,,2-3/4'' shotgun shells,

Thank you for your help on the Super 90 designation. My gun is stamped 2002, so wern't all M1's Super 90's by then?

 

(As far as the 8 shot goes, i made this account years ago when i was running around with my mag extention on all the time.)

Seems like the Europeans like to use the word "Super" in model names. I used to be a big saxophone player and the top of the line saxophones are made in Paris by a company called Selmer. The models are called Super Action 80s. Never really understood that.
