Grumpymrpuggy Posted April 9 Posted April 9 I was cleaning my M4 and noticed that the chrome lining on the bolt seemed bubbly and just off. I looked at photos of used M4s and their bolts look to be as shiny as the day they rolled off the assembly line. Is this something I should contact Benelli for? Or am I just being pedantic? Quote
ShellNewbie Posted April 10 Posted April 10 (edited) Benelli is likely to tell you it’s normal. I recently asked about a Benelli bolt which looks much rougher and was told it’s due to a “new green nickel coating” and “the flakes of metal from the locking head is normal”. Funny thing is I can find no reference to this “new coating”. Honestly the general quality is disappointing compared to my other Benelli. But I say reach out and see what they say. Maybe a bunch of people asking about it will cause them to improve it or at least share what it is. Edited April 10 by ShellNewbie Quote
MrMilitaryPolice Posted April 10 Posted April 10 Ive put a 1k rounds thru my M4 since 2006 and the bolt face still looks damn near pristine Quote
ShellNewbie Posted April 10 Posted April 10 My other M4 bolt face is clean with no rough edges. This newer one has tons of circles and chipping edges that is leaving material in the shotgun. I’m not happy about it. I am running it at an event next week and really curious how it’s going to look - if it’s worse I’m going back to Benelli. Quote

I love my shotgun, but this is not the only issue I’ve noticed either. I also have a slight wear pattern forming on a visible area of the bolt, which is definitely not in spec based on the dozens of other M4 bolts I’ve seen. I’m really disappointed that a company held so high has lost its touch. I’ll contact them tomorrow to see if they’ll maybe do something for me. However, I doubt my bolt wear is due to a new process because it’s literally wearing off to where I can see the bare metal underneath. Quote
SOCOMguy Posted April 14 Posted April 14 "Green nickel" ?? ... I smell an environmental rat. Just a guess but ... hard chrome plating is not a particularly earth friendly process so go to something more "green" and see how it holds up. " Flakes" don't sound very good to me. Joe B Quote

Joe B Yea, I agree with this. It’s most likely the same reason they got rid of the NP3 too: charge you the same price for a worse product. They definitely are using a new process too because they discontinued the OEM bolt in 2021, so you can’t buy it as a backup anymore. I guess with all the issues from COVID, they started experimenting a little. Quote
