Cool guide - thanks.

 

Also, if you want another good resource for actual photos you can look here. An online encyclopedia. I just happened to use it the other day to grab photos of all the ducks we have in our local regs so that I could start to learn to identify them better. They had pics of all the ones I checked on.

You know that old saying, "You are what you eat"?

 

It applies to coots too.

 

Quoting Wikipedia - "These birds can dive for food but can also forage on land. They are omnivores, eating plant material, insects, fish, and other aquatic animals. Adults mostly consume "pond scum"."

they are excellent eating. The legs are full of small tendons that get hard when cooked and are much like fish ribs. The breasts are as good as any duck and the gizzards are huge.
