Slug Gun For Deer Hunting

I am not a hunter nor have I ever hunted animals. That said, what length barrel would be needed for deer hunting using a Super Nova? Would the smooth 18.5" barrel on the tactical work? I see some advertised with a 24" barrel.

This is a gift for my son in law and I would consider used.

No offense, doc, but if you're buying something for someone else's gun it's best to either ask them what they want or give them a gift certificate.

His personal preferences may be different from thos of ours, and a gun is a very personal thing to most guys.

i would go with 24" and do the super nova combo with rifled slug barrel!! Good son in laws are hard to come by and he would be the man with a new slug gun for around 900.00 or if ya wanta get a used 28" to 30" smooth bore he can kill a deer with that also, the shorter barrel shotguns would be ok for someone that has been shooting them for a while but he would be more likely to have better chance with a 24" + barrel. The Super Nova Combo with extra slug barrel would be my choice if i was just going slugger and money was not an option, you get to use either of the 2 different types of slugs due to the smooth bore barrel and the rifled barrel! He could do good even with a20 Ga smooth bore used but i just do not like used shotguns because you do not know what someone has shot thru it and could be an accident waiting to happen as in gun malfunction?? not good!

No offense taken. But you were no help at all. i did not request moralization, just some tech info from a hunting standpoint. No offense meant.

Your help was greatly appreciated and helped me in an area where my tech skills are lacking. Your point about the used gun is well taken and I think I will get him the combo system. It seems like a perfect fit for him. thanks again.

tell him congrats and he deserves the best for taking care of your best!! If there is an adoption in your family any time soon? i am there! My wish list only has one new gun on it browning Cynergy and it's only 2500.00 so figure out what ya need cause i am on it!! 1000.00 bucks for a combo gun is high but i feel worth every penny if ya shoot slugs a lot and i know loads of people that take whitetail every year with plain old smooth bore 20Ga shotguns but the have years of experience in folding whitetails!! Good medium range platform for deer, hogs, and anything that needs killed and grilled!!:)

He told me that when he goes hunting this Fall he will be taking my 9 year old grad daughter with him. My daughter has not allowed guns in the home so this will be his first with her permission. ( Trust me, it is not worth it to argue with her) He does not know that he is getting the gun as it is for father's Day for him.

My other daughter is a 15 on a scale of 1-10 but I would not wish her on my worst enemy (well, maybe). You know the song by the OJ's, "She's a Maneater'? Well, they wrote it for her.. sorry, no gun for you (or soup either). But, if I can ever be of help to you, please ask.
