Just a thought, but could part of the problem be with our lawsuit "trigger happy" culture (no pun intended)? If the safety were too easy to disengage they could have a major lawsuit on their hands. I know that this is at least part of the reason why trigger pulls have gotten into the 4 pound range. I have a SBE2 and would like the safety to be lighter, but since I only use it for turkey and use a blind also, I can live with it. If anything I am glad it is overly stiff than too easy to release.

Just got back from a turkey hunting trip and the bird I got can't argue with the pattern, but I was hoping for better myself. When I did shoot mine the best out of it was Winchester 3 1/2" high velocity #4, with about 10 pellets in the head and neck from 40 yards. I got rid of an 870 for the SBE2 and with the 870 and hevi-shot I was getting 35 to 40 pellets in the head and neck. I have contacted Benelli a couple times in regards to a turkey choke and they say they are working with Briley on it. Can't get here soon enough for me. I was told that the Beretta Optima chokes work, but since they are not cryo-treated I am afraid to use them. If they expand and contract different under heat I really don't want to ruin a $500 barrel for a better pattern. Also am wanting a hevi-shot choke for this gun, can't wait to see what it does then.....

All I can say is that it really depends on the dealer and when they got their order placed with Benelli. I ordered one from the store I normally buy from and they said months, but I was able to get one out of stock at another store less than a week later. The suggestion I have is that I called Benelli's customer service # and they told me which dealers had the gun I was looking for already shipped to them, it saved me a lot of time and effort. I got the 24" Timber HD in mid-April (too bad the rib was bent so I needed a different one anyway, but had that one within a week too) and just got back from a turkey hunting trip and the bird I got can't argue with the pattern of it either. Just now wanting a super full tube, which they say is in the works with Briley. One dealer I talked to said the gun I already had in my hands was not even being made, so I have to put a lot of the blame on the dealers I was dealing with, not Benelli.

According to the Beretta catalog the advantage is that the bores are maxed out so there is less friction on the wad as it travels down the barrel. Also it tends to compress the shot less so there is less likelihood of deformed pellets. I have read that Benelli does NOT do this because it would interfere with the cycling of the inertia system. From what I can see the only semi-autos that overbore the barrels are gas operated ones. I wouldn't make that trade off. Went out with a cousin shooting trap and his 1100 could not cycle trap loads, but my Montefeltro shot all day long (500+ rounds)

It is hard to tell which choke to use, it depends on the load that you intend to use. I shoot hevi-shot and it cannot be shot out of an extra full choke, much the same as steel. I am a firm believer in hevi-shot, having taken a fall gobbler at a measured 72 yards. I am trying (in vain) to find a hevi-shot choke for the new SBE II. Have the gun on order, but I am told that the threading has changed and that the new choke tubes are criogenically treated like the barrel, so I am going to have to go back to lead if I get the gun in time for this springs's hunt. Anyways back on topic. The only thing you can do is to try different chokes and ammo, it gets expensive, but it is less expensive than missing a longbeard because of a mis-matched ammo choke setup. My dad uses a comp-n-choke and has had very good luck with it, also try briley, they make the extra full turkey choke for Benelli, at lest according to the catalog they do.

I personally do not think it is necessary to install a muzzle brake on an R1. I have a 30-06 version and the recoil is so little it is a joy to shoot. If I were you I would try the gun without a muzzle brake first. I noticed that shooting mine that the recoil was very, very small and by puting a muzzle brake on it all you are doing is making it noisier to shoot.

Does anyone know the production numbers of the Montefeltro Super 90 witht he 21" barrel? I have one that was purchased in about 1991, and was wondering just how rare this gun is. I am not sure why Benelli discontinued the shorter barrel such as this, but I am curious as to how many others like it exist. I have never seen one at any gun show so I wonder how many others were ever brought into the states.

I think another good choke is the Comp-N-Choke. It also has the feature of being ported so it can at least help take some of the bite out of the 3 1/2" shells. I also can attest to the long range effectiveness of Hevi-shot with the right choke tube. Last fall I was able to shoot a hen at a measured 72 yards. I normally would not even attempt a shot at that range, but I had confidence in the gun since I have it scoped and had shot out to 60 yards while patterning. I think most every choke out there will pattern well, you just have to find which shells shoot the best out of your chosen tube.

Yes I purchased one a few weeks ago. I have the 30-06 with a 22" barrell. I am very pleased with it and was getting groups in the 1.5" range at 100 yds. I am amazed at how light the recoil was. I was shooting 150 grain Winchester power point and power point plus. Overall I am very pleased with it.

Does anyone have an idea of what caliber's are planned for 2004 for the new R-1 rifle? Also prices for the extra barrels? I finally got mine out shooting last weekend and have to say that it is a dream to shoot. I have the 30-06 and was shooting 150 grain deer loads. The gun kicks less than my Montefeltro shooting trap loads. Very accurate too for a high power autoloading rifle. I like everything about it, and would like to get more use from it with a smaller caliber. PS... I did not like the scope mount that came with it. I have found that you can use the same bases as the Browing BAR. Makes the final product look much nicer.
