  1. Jim630, You might refer to this post for some info: http://www.benelliusa.com/forums/ultimatebb.php/topic/5/33.html Best idea would be to call Benelli and ask if it is available yet. _Glenn
  2. Chronos, Well, um ... whether or not they are literate with regards to these posts remains to be seen. They did however take care of my issue and were able to maintain their integrity none-the-less. BTW, I just got back from Gander Mountain here in MI and they had an R1 .308 for like $750 if you applied all their 10% off discounts and clearance price etc. Of course it had the indexed nut vs the spring and cap. So... -Glenn
  3. Update: 1/19/06 I emailed customer service and they replied in 1 day saying they looked into it and though they could not verify who made the promise they would be happy to send me a new spring cap. My faith in Benelli has been restored. BENELLI -- THANK YOU! -Glenn
  4. Well I never thought this would happen after touting to others what a good company Benelli is but I am very unhappy with the customer disservice I have gotten regarding the spring cap that was to be sent to me months ago. I have the older index system cap that loosens up with age and adversely affects accuracy. So after being told I would get a new cap, months later I never got it. Now according to Jason at customer service I will not get one unless Benelli changes its current policy. "They are only putting those on rifles that are sent in ... I have your name on a list and will let you know if anything changes." I was promised by one of the female customer service reps (not Paula) after a lengthy conversation that I would get one when they came in. It would be mailed to me. Jason states he told me that before but all I have from him is a voice mail in response to a message I left. Keep in mind I left my message before I talked to the other rep and got his message after I talked to her. I'm really not sure what to do here. I was promised a new cap when a new batch arrived. Now I'm told flat out "No ... send it in." If that were the case I would have sent it in months ago!!! At this point I can not tell you how dissapointed I am. BENELLI USA WHERE IS YOUR INTEGRITY Has this happened to anyone else? -Glenn Update: 1/19/06 They took care of me. Faith Restored! Whew, that was close. 5. My saved link to Leupold skips that and goes straight to the rifle scopes page. I went and took a look at the intro and yeah you're right that's it. What is getting my attention is that the scope tube looks like it's carbon fiber in spots - maybe just because this is a pre production model. Goofy looking it is, but carbon fiber -- whew! Thanks, G
  6. Tucker--OK, where did you get this photo? This 'thing' is not listed on the Leupold site at all that I could find. Also, what type of rifle is that? Inquiring minds and all... Thanks in advance, -Glenn
  7. AA, You may have solved this issue by now, but I have the same setup and have no problems at all with a 300 WM R1 and over 500 rounds fired. I slide the bases all the way forward and hand tighten. Recoil pushes the scope forward and it is against the slots so it stays put. Let me know what you did. -Glenn
  8. Foxbat, You may want to send them a digital photo of your buttstock so they can get a forearm with a similar wood grain pattern. Someone on here got a replacement that was very different from the original. Actually, that may have been Tucker now that I think of it. Anyway, I believe they were accomodating and replaced the replacement. Speaking of Tucker: How's the Ticker Tucker? You good? Did they roto rotor or call the master plumber and get you new pipes? I'm telling you, it was eerie quiet around here for a week or so -- so quiet, you could even hear a firing pin drop. Glad you're back! -Glenn [ 12-04-2005, 07:04 AM: Message edited by: GlennRoss ]
  9. Eclipse--My brother, a Lefty, shot my R1 all afternoon last month and had not one problem. He loved it.
  10. I've tried many different brands and styles of ammo in my 300 WM R1 with lots of different results. The R1 is very selective on what it "likes" 1:11 twist rate and all. I'll sum up my most recent experience at the range with Fusion and Federal Vital-shok Nosler Partitions, um keep in mind I have the Carbine 20" barrel vs your 24". BTW as an aside, the worst ammo I tried by far was PMC ammunition. It flat out jammed my gun due to oversized cases. Unfortunately it is the only brand I've found that offers the highly accurate Sierra GameKing bullets. Fusion: 165 grain bullets seem to work better than 150 or 180. Actually the tightest group's (1"- 3/4") I've gotten so far with any ammo have been with Fusion 165's. Moreover, the variance in groups with fusion has been windage alone. Elevation has been dead on! You could attribute that to trigger control. The Fusion 150's gouped much lower and little farther apart -- I had to adjust my scope up almost 2" to hit the same place as the 165's. Funny enough, Federal Nosler 180's use the same scope adjustments as the 165 Fusions. Federal Nosler: I have boxes and boxes of Federal Nosler partition 180 grain that I practice with and have gotten 1 1/4"- 1 1/2" groupings easily from them. Truth is, the more I shoot the R1 the better my groupings. In my opion barrel break in and practice are the keys to accuracy with the R1. I've now shot over 300 rounds and it keeps getting better and better. Typically I've found that 165 grains work better for my 20" 300 WM than 150's or 180's with any ammo. Also, you need to shoot with a cold barrel -- leave at least 30-45 seconds between shots. Your first shot at game will always be with a cold barrel; however, follow up shots may not. So, you'll want to spend some time doing rapid follow ups to see where they'll go. In my case they tend to drift Left from 1"-2" and maybe a 1/2" lower. Good Luck, Glenn
  11. The entire lower half of the lower (Mitten) peninsula here in Michigan is shotgun only. In fact, there are twice as many deer in the shotgun region as there are in the rifle region -- which, ironically, is more than twice as large (includes the upper peninsula and the upper half of the lower peninsula). Lots and lots of shotguns but I will be dropping'em with my Benelli R1 up state! -Glenn
  12. 11/05/05 - It's over! I got 20 boxes of 300 WM Federal Premuim Nosler partition 180 for $12.95 each. Price is back up to $31.99 box. Like $1.29 gal gas you'll never see that again. Or??? -Glenn
  13. Garren, Very nice shooting! Excellent trigger control. LOL, every once in a while I'll get a round like 4" off to the left and I'll look around to see if anyone else noticed I pulled hard on the trigger. Where I found all my carbon was on the inside of the gas port housing on the barrel (not named in the parts guide). I was actually kinda shocked I had missed it. For me, it was very funny that the bolt was totally jammed. The round had never seated correctly and the bolt was halfway locked into the barrel. Good thing it did not fire that round being only partially in there. Please keep us updated. I'm sure there are several others who only peruse that may have the same issue. Again good luck. Glenn
  14. Garren, I would check the gas ports inside the piston assembly and the cylinder plunger pin (names taken from parts manual). I cleaned mine very well I had thought, then I got a good look inside the piston assembly and found quite a bit of build up. If the gas ports are semi-blocked your rounds may only be partially ejected. That or maybe there is something binding up your recoil spring tube assembly. Does it dry feed rounds OK? Feel like it's binding up? I had a problem myself with 300 WM this last time at the range. A round misfired on me! I did a quick once over and found it never fully chambered. I attempted to recharge and the handle would not budge! I tried to force it forward and it would not budge. I ended up having the completely dissasemble the rifle right there at the range. LOL, you would have thought I was doing open heart surgery with all the lookers on. Anyway, once I started to remove the barrel it came right out. Turned out the problem was the ammo I was using was sub grade. PMC loaded with a great bullet too -- Sierra Gamekings. The case was slightly oversized as was several more in the box! Watch out for PMC guys!!! BTW, The guy next to me had a 270 BAR with the BOSS muzzle brake and was tack driving consistent sub 1" groups @100 yards! This was to my 1 1/2" groups. He was all smirks until he saw how easily the R1 came apart and the quality of contruction. He then acknowledged the R1 is put together better and that with out the BOSS assembly on the end his was 2" groupings. Apparently the thing works. OK so back to the topic, I'd call customer service or have a gunsmith look it over if the ports are all clean and the recoil spring moves freely. Good luck Garren. Git r' done, Deer season is almost here!!! Glenn
  15. Bing -- Does your R1 have the "Comfortech System"? I'm assuming it does since you spoke of your Super Sport. If so, I'm glad to hear it works well. Your's would be the first field testimony on the forum here of the comfortech version. I can tell you my shoulder is sore from yesterdays 106 rounds from my 300 WM R1 (with muzzle brake). 3 weeks ago or so I shot over a hundred rounds and same thing. LOL, of course last weekend I shot hundreds and hundreds of rounds thru an M16 during training I had and you know no recoil etc. Probably the thing that would improve a magnum R1 felt recoil the most is a gel recoil pad like the comfortech has. I'd settle for a retrofit pad if nothing else -- are you listening Benelli??? Glenn
  16. I totally agree with Tucker, 30-06! I would add that the ammo for a 30-06 is much cheaper than many other calibers. I pay $5-6 or more for 300 Win Mag. The gas ported semi-auto feature absorbs some recoil; however, my R1 (300 WM) kicks quite a bit. So much so, I installed a very efficient muzzle brake. And it still jumps . Not good for follow up shots. BTW, Tucker best of luck to you tomorrow!!! I'll keep the faith until you get back. Be quick in your recovery please -- this place won't be the same until your truimphant return. If it means anything to you, I'll be sitting opening day out this year myself. I have a dental appointment Nov 15th -- opening day here in the Mitten State. It was that day or a month later. The receptionists' reply to my telling her it was opening day of deer season was, "...and the problem with that sir is what???" Geesh! She obviously doesn't know any hunters. So, again 30-06. Less recoil, less $$ for ammo, and it more than does the job. You may want to seriously consider the Comfortech version if you want a smoother shooting weapon. Thing is, the figured walnut stock on many R1's makes is hard to turn down. Personally I sleep with mine. LOL Good luck, Glenn
  17. Spoke with a very nice girl at customer service who indicated that the comfortech stock would not be available as an upgrade any time in the next year or more possibly. She said that if we started a survey to see if there is a demand that Benelli does monitor the threads and may take action to make it available sooner! So, to that end put your request here if you would be intrested in upgrading the stock of your walnut R1 to comfortech. Lets rattle the cage and see if they will respond. I'm all for it. I'll be first in line for an upgrade. -G [ 01-25-2006, 05:47 AM: Message edited by: GlennRoss ]
  18. Garren, I have a box in my hands. It just arrived from back order on the 10/12. This one says "300 WIN. MAG. 180 GRAIN NOSLER PARTITION P300WD2". It says nothing about High Energy which is clearly indicated on the HE box. Some of the v-shocks are high energy, just not the ones I ordered. It is a nice round. Nickle palted case, flattened lead tip nose. Should more than do the trick for shooting practice. BTW, my new order of 10 boxes is on back order also But cheap, cheap, cheap at the price. -G
  19. Garren, LOL, the link you gave for the Natchez was a bit off also. It's not natchez.com -- that takes you to some carribean country's work-in-progress web site. The correct link is: http://www.natchezss.com/ -G
  20. Garren, Thanks for the info about the Hornady's and the web link! That's a nice grouping in the center. I do need to mention that you are off about the v-shocks. Not all v-shock are High Energy -- In fact the rounds I ordered are not HE. Here's the link to the Federal website regarding 300 WM v-shock nosler partitions. It clearly shows them availible in non-HE and HE. You're right though, people need to double check and make sure they are not HE. http://www.federalcartridge.com/default.asp?pg=27 Let me know if you find me to be inaccurate about the Federal info. -G
  21. In case anyone might be mildly interested (LOL), Cabela's here in Michigan (Dundee location) has the Comfortech Benelli R1's IN STOCK! I saw it yesterday (Monday Oct 24th) and oh my gosh, what a nice gun!!! It is a beauty and fits very softly in my shoulder. I am absolutely green with envy. They have a 30-06 and a 300 Win Mag both for $1199.99. That's about $250 more than I paid for the Woody version from them. (Does that sound right? None-the less, LOL) Their phone number is 734-529-4700. If you have a Cabela's near you I'd look them up and call if you're interested. I do not know if they'll hold one for you but it's worth asking. I can tell you, I love the figured walnut on my R1 300 WM, but if I had it to do over it wouldn't think twice about the choice: Comfortech for sure! I shot 140 rounds a little over a week ago and even with a muzzle brake my shoulder began to "feel the pain". More on that topic later. -Glenn
  22. Hey guys, Just back from a week of intense Army training. Much fun, seriously improved my markamanship thru lots and lots of shooting and evaluation. I think I got it that in order to become a good shooter you gotta go out and shoot. That's expensive for some of us I know. The rounds for my 300 win mag R1 average $1-1.50 apiece! To that end I found out that Bass Pro shops is having a 61% off several varities and calibre's of Federal Premiium ammo. Every box is $12.49 regardless of regular price. I just ordered 10 boxes of 300 WinMag Nosler partion 180 grain. More than half off. I do not know how long they'll have the sale but get there and get some so you cn go out and get good with your rifle. Here's the link: http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTextId=28645&hvarDept=400&hvarEvent=&hvarClassCode=4&hvarSubCode=3&hvarTarget=browse Hope this is useful for some of you! -Glenn
  23. Update non-symetrical muzzle brake: So, after thinking it over and having serious second thoughts about plugging the downward facing port holes to reduce barrel climb, I contacted the manufacturer of my muzzle brake (Vais Arms--the same brake Lazzeroni Arms uses). This is what I wrote: "I'm wondering if a muzzle brake design without port holes facing down would help with muzzle climb (and follow up shots with a semi-auto), particularly with a magnum caliber rifle. Also what about the concern that ground debris is being kicked up etc. by downward facing port holes as in your brake design? I suspect that a non-symmetrical port configuration would hurt accuracy, despite any advantage in muzzle climb decrease. If I'm on track with this, barrel harmonics would be much more dynamic and unpredictable in a non-symmetrical brake design. Ron Bartlett replied: "You are exactly right about leaving the ports off of the bottom of the brake---it destroys accuracy. Also, several of my customers shoot prone with rifles we have installed brakes on. They simply put a piece of carpet or a matt under the muzzle to keep the dust down." OK then, I'll keep my very symetrical muzzle brake and deal with the climb issue thru practice. I'm off to the gun range again on Sunday. This time I'm taking along a Limb Saver Barrel De-Resonator. It is sapposed to do the opposite of what a non-symetrical muzzle brake would do: which is decrease vibratory resonance and increase accuracy. This ought to be fun! Get back with you folks with the results later. Glenn
  24. Of springs and caps that come loose in the night. And thus the plot thickens... Too tight or not too tight? Is this even the right question? Hmmmm...
