    M3 or the M4

I bought the M-3 for the pump/semi-auto function. I also bought the M-3 because I could get a full-size (26" barrel) to go with the 18.5" tactical barrel. The M-3 functions perfectly and is quite a looker whenever you go to a range.
  10. Because I did not dissassamble the entire magazine extension, I cannot tell you for sure if the rust was limited to the spring or not. How did the magazine extension get rusty? Well the shotgun has been in a gun safe with a golden rod de-humidifer for more than 20 years. Other parts of the shotgun had so little rust, that I only noticed minor amounts when I put another coat of gun oil on it.
  11. It is a long story, but suffice it to say I have accumulated all of the parts tnecessary o make a complete M-2; now all I need is a receiver. If anyone has a new or used M-2 receiver only for sale (or knows where to get one); drop me a line. Thanks In Advance!
  12. Who knows how long it has been since I ran 21 quick rounds through my M-3. Certainly not since I last gave it a major cleaning and lube. Imagine my surprise when the shotty would no longer cycle. When I shook the gun it sounded like loose shells in the magazine extension. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. Nothing I could do at the gun range without my tools...so back home I went. Tried multiple different approaches before giving in to the idea that a full strip might be in order. Lo and behold, when I was carefully loosening the barrel/magazine extension bracket....I heard the magazine follower fly back toward the bolt. Most likely explanation, I had overtightened the barrel/magazine extension bracket. Solution, less torque and some blue (NEVER RED) locktite. Since I had all of my supplies out anyway, I figured why not do a full strip and lube.....but this time be sure to give the magazine extension extra attention. Long story short, there was also a lot of rust and debris inside the mag extension and it took gun blaster to get it all out. Moral: don't expect your self-help/home defense shotgun to work when you need it most if you don't regularly run full bore shoot-as-fast-as-you-can exercises. Without trying to hard, I can guess how deep the do do would have been if I had only gotten one round out and then the gun jammed and would not fire at all.
  13. Right now, you could probably get enough money for your folding stock version to buy a new M-3 which already has a pistol grip stock and night sights. The other issue you will have to address is how easy/hard will it be to take the folding-stock modified rear sight off....and how easy is it to find a replacement. My experience with adding things to my M-3 is that by the time I am through, I have spent more money than just buying an M-3 with all of the gadgets already installed. Just my 2 cents.
  14. As an M-3 owner/shooter, I would like to add my 2 cents: When you got your M-3 did you disassemble it, clean it carefully, lube it liberally, and then put it back together? BTW, when my M-3 was new, I experienced a few FTFs...then I really lubed it up...and no problems since then. Have you put 500-1000 semi-auto rounds down the tube yet? If the answer to that is no, you may have to put a couple of hundred semi-auto rounds of full power loads down the tube, before you switch to target loads. When you cycle the M-3 manually...do the rounds feed and fire correctly? If yes, have you made sure that the selector switch (to go from manual to semi-auto) is completely locked into the semi-auto position. Lastly, have you had a more experienced shooter try your M-3 with the exact same shells....and did they have any FTFs? It is not uncommon for a new shooter to limp wrist/loose shoulder hold; thereby causing the inertial recoil action to not function. Lastly, on a few M-3s the following problems can occur: when putting in the charging handle, some folks do not correctly bottom it out (try pulling the charging handle out, put it back in and hit it forcefully with the palm of your hand); lastly, sometimes the bolt release button may not be fully releasing....try dry firing it a few times (check to make sure the M-3 is empty, check to make sure the M-3 is empty, check to make sure the M-3 is empty) to see if the button moves when the trigger is pulled. If all else fails, buy some snap caps and see if they cycle/trigger clicks properly. Once you have your M-3 working properly, you will forget the minor issues of becoming a first-time M-3 owner. BTW, many other shotguns also have a learning curve.
  15. If any of you try the Dillion side saddle for your M-3 let me know how the shotty semi-auto functions. I would be particularly interested if the M-3 continues to cycle post side saddle with the 2.75" reduced recoil, tactical loads. I too have read of others using M-3s that put on a side saddle...and then their shotty would not work in the semi-mode. BTW, I have used the elastic shell holder on my stock and the M-3 still functioned in the semi-auto mode.
  16. Nitro Kid, what you describe even has a name: "Benelli Thumb." The good news is there is a relatively cheap cure: have C-Rums modify your carrier. What he does is weld your old carrier so that their is not a pinch hazard any more. Works Great! His prices are very affordable: $40 to exchange a modified one for yours; or around $60 to have him modify a new one for you. If you search the threads at this web site, you should be able to find a picture I posted probably 2 years ago. Contact info is: 417-753-2707.
  17. I had the same problem finding a 26" barrel for my M-3. Unfortunately, M-3's take unique barresl. The good news is that they are still listed in Benelli's catalog. If you have problems finding one, drop me an e-mail
  18. The M-3 bolt group does not have a "tail" (part 027a, "link"). The M-1 bolt group does have a "tail." If you remove the tail (which is held in by a type of punch pin), can the M-1 bolt be used in an M3? Also, have any of you other Benelli M-3 shotgun owners tried shooting Aguila 12ga 2 1/2", BuckShot 11 pellets Minishells? If so, how did they work/not work? Thanks!
  19. Can anyone tell me the various factory magazine lengths that the M-1 came from the factory? Thanks!
  20. Once you think that you are close to a purchase decision, find a local gunsmith who is comfortable working on whatever brand of shotgun you will be purchasing. Prior to actual purchase, let the local gunsmith know the make and model of the potential shotgun. Then ask him/her what after market pads can be installed....and choose the pad that has the best felt recoil reduction. BTW, I did the same thing (but came to the gunsmith with the idea that a LimbSaver pad would absorb the most recoil) and my gunsmith came up with a pad (not LimbSaver) that absorbs shock better than anything I have ever used.....and also allowed a custom fit. Now, nobody can tell that the new pad is not "factory original" until they shoot it and note the low felt recoil.
  21. I am not trying to buy a Benelli M-3. I already have one. Benelli does make a 26" barrel for the M-3 and some folks who get the M-3 with the long barrel almost always change out to the 18.5" barrel. The reason I am posting on this forum...is because (about a year ago, I believe) one of the forum members was selling their M-3 26" barrel. BTW, I do check all of the on-line auction sites almost daily.
