  1. It's cool if you want to camo up your gun, and cut down on the glare, but if you are really trying to fight rust, this isn't the best way to go.

Have you ever thought about having your gun dipped in camo? Gander Mtn. has very reasonable prices on this service. Just as info

  2. If you aren't careful, you will actually get more rust using this cover. Moisture will get under it, as it is not a full cover. Make it a point to remove the neoprene and turn it inside out after hunting in the rain, at the end of the day. Wipe down your gun with a dry rag, and then put a light coat of oil, or gun grease on the metal before replacing the cover.:)

    Good luck with your Hunting!

  3. Hey, give those cheap Nikee Jordons a try! They are the real secret behind my fortune in the woods:p

There is a lot of good info available on here. Everyone gets along pretty well, it just seems to get a bit crazy in any thread that has to do with turkeys, from time to time.

I'll bet that if Remington had a Forum, it would make this one look like Sunday School. Benelli shooters have passion, but Remington fans have an unbelievable amount of charactors from every corner of the Earth. I would most def. like to see that board created:)

  4. Some can't take an answer for what it is, they have to edit out bits to make their point valid.

The trend on this board in particular, is to wait for others to try and help someone, and then come in and pick apart the answers provided, through the use of quotes and such. Flaming and bantering soon follow, and the original question then takes a backseat.

  5. *clears throat* okay.. the max4 hd camo is FINE! its just the break up that blends you into your surroundings. As long as it isnt orange and pink stripes i believe you will be okay. It is your movement that counts. Stay still, not everything in the woods is brown and green. Turkeys know that just as we do. Just becuase it doesnt say timber on it doesnt mean you cant use it around trees. Its acamo patter to help your break up among "natural" objects. Some camo claim to be better than others and that might be the case when talking about blending with your surroundings, but its more about pattern of camo instead of color in my opinion. but if you are worried about color just think about the woods you live in. If you hunt thick cedars then you may want to think about your break up, but dead grass, hay, sandstone, corn stalks, etc are the same color as your waterfowl camo. you will be fine.

    Thank you.

The original question was if his existing gun would be suitable to hunt turkeys or deer with. The existing gun IS camo. There was just confusion on if the Advantage Max4 pattern would make a big enough difference in the outcome of the hunt to justify using a complete different gun, or putting another pattern on it.

  6. The camo you have will be fine. Movement is the key. Animals are not going to have the ability to look over and say "Hey, this is an Oak Ridge, those Cat-tails and brown grass don't belong here" They will go about their business, and as long as you can be still, and not draw attention to yourself, you will be fine. People hunt with all black guns, stainless steel, guns with gold inlays and everything else. They just know how to use the natural cover of the forest to disguise themselves.

  7. I rely on my wood duck call to steer birds my way after they are frightened by others shooting at them. Just last week, I was able to kill several Woody's by giving short bursts of Flying Whines or "Do Whips" after they survived the gauntlet of blasting my friends put on them on the other end of the swamp. I don't so much try to make them land in my lap as I do to pull them in range, with the belief that their friends have found a safe hole to escape to. Working narrow choke points in flooded timber with a little open water close by, helps with the illusion. By the time they figure it out, my steel is already on it's way!

I would suggest the Quaker Boy Woody Wood Duck call, if you want to make it happen!

  8. I usually tote a QB Woody Wood Duck call, and a Suzy Q.

My favorite Wood Duck decoy is a little patch of flooded timber, with lots of brush scattered throughout. The best part is that I don't have to spend half the morning picking it up and putting it in a bag. I just leave it there:D:p

  9. Crow hunting is a really fun way to spend some time outdoors! It takes me back to the early days of my youth, where I wanted to kill everything under the sun to prove to the oldtimers in my gang that I could hang with them!:p

I remember making decoys out of cardboard, magic marker, and popsicle sticks, and using my old Lohmans crow call to bring them in. I'd get them whipped into a frenzy and they would just stand on different limbs of an oak tree cawing at each other. They would be so worked up, that they didn't notice birds falling one by one to my Remington pump .22, that was shooting CCI CB's. lol

  10. No magnification. This is helpful when a bird is in the "gray area" as far as maximum effective range goes. You still get the feeling that the bird may be too far away, as opposed to it looking real close, and perhaps causing you to shoot farther than your gun wants to. The inner circle makes a pretty effective rangefinder. You can guage body size in relation to the ring that represents a 30in circle at 40yds

  11. Nice Tucker, I'm planning on getting really aggressive this year with my calling techniques to try and pull in a really seclusive buck who we haven't got a shot at in the last 3 years. This monster's prints tend to disappear down into the thick nasty brush and into our swamps come hunting season. I'm hoping some real dominant snorts and grunts with some rattling will pull him out.

As far as the doe calls go I think I'm going to try the Quaker Boy Squeezin' Bleat because I can use it with my foot while I do grunts as if to create multiple deer communicating at the same time. It was recommended from a great hunter recently and it looks like the call for me :).

Still making adjustments to my gear list, he11 I have another month to get it all finalized (Due to the fact that I haven't taken the Archery Hunter's Safety Course which Maine requires to get your extended archery license)

Best of Luck and Thanks for the responses!

Good choice, my man! You won't be dissappointed

  12. I hear ya,Tucker. Thanks for the photo

One would think this wouldn't be such a nonsense issue for a gun that costs as much as these, and comes from the same family as the awesome autos:confused:

Let's call customer service, I'm sure the'll get right on it:p

  13. Take the elevator off, and polish the living daylights out of it with a Dremel equipped with a rubber bit, or take a very small hand file and use it to smoothe out the points of contact inside the trigger housing that the elevator comes in contact with. If you don't feel comfortable doing this yourself, I would advise taking it to a gunsmith, and for a nominal fee, they will have you back in action! Pardon the pun:)

  14. It is not dirt. If you take the trigger assembly out, you will see that where the "flap" or elevator is attatched, it is a very tight fit. On some of these guns, there is extra material there that doesn't allow the elevator to return down without closing the pump of the action without some extra force.

When you pump the action open, try closing it quickly and with authority, and see if the elevator does indeed go all the way down. Then try this again, but this time close it softly, like you would in the woods if you weren't trying to spook game. The elevator will almost indeed be stuck in the halfway position...

  15. I def agree that stalking can be tricky cause those birds have great vision. How do you guys change your tactics between the spring and fall seasons? During the spring when they are mating those calls and decoys really bring them in but do you find that different approaches are better suited in the fall? I still set out a couple decoys in the fall to trick the birds into the area being safe but not so much to bring the Toms in to fight. Any products that you guys feel cant be left at home in the fall?

My main Fall tactic is to set up on known travel routes, or in natural funnels like intersections of ridges. As far as my "must have" items, I make sure I have a couple of good double reed mouth calls with Ghost cuts, and an aluminum pot call with a carbon striker. Both of these are what I use for Kee Kee Runs, and Kee Kee's. This when used at the right time, help me pull the Boss hen, and in turn the rest of the flock closer to my set-up.

I also like a good raspy call to do Assembly Yelps with, which turns into a reverse dominance situation from the Spring, where instead of a gobbler getting all fired up, I target the Boss Mamma Hen. If I can get her and the gang near me making a racket, a curious Tom may show up to investigate..

  16. Sit and call almost exclusively. But an occasional spot, stalk, and intercept, does occur :D

    Agreed.

The only exception I have, is when I hunt in Pa. where legally you're only allowed to hunt from a "stationary calling position". This was more cut and dry when we were required to wear an orange hat while moving between SCP's, but now that the orange law has been lifted, the difference between stalking, and walking to a better/closer, stationary calling position, gets a little gray and sketchy, to say the least.:p

  17. This is the ugliest website I have ever seen and its selling the most expensive Turkey ammo ever sold! I wouldn't EVER pay that much to kill a bird! I smashed a tom at 60 yards with a 3" mag shot this spring that cost me $12 for 25 rounds. This ammo suggested is for those who just cant get the job done right. You want some heavier than lead ammo get some Dark Cloud (which in my opinion is overpriced too).

What exactly does "get the job done right" mean?

Also, who makes this Dark Cloud ammo? I'm familiar with Black Cloud, but that is for waterfowl, and not hevier than lead. I'd be interested to try some of this stuff out..
