The recoil reduction is not the primary reason one ports a gun (a trap or sheet gun anyway). The primary reason is to limit muzzle rise for follow-up shots as well as less felt recoil (the gun comes straight back as opposed to "flipping" up on the shooter). That said I have not heard much about the screw in choke tubes that have porting. Most porting is back from the muzzle a bit so don't know if the ported chokes help much or are a gimic as they are ported radially and not just on top of the barrel as with standard porting. Pat

For turkeys the shorter barrels are preferred as they swing easier in the brush. Don't see alot of O/U in the duck blind. It takes at least 3 shots to bring a goose down Pat

My son is right handed left eye dominate. I got him a Browning pump shotgun as it is a bottom eject so you can shoot it left or right handed (it has a tang safety so no issue there either). I am not sure on the availablity of 3.5" Browning pumps though....never looked. Pat

There is only the federal limit of 18.5" for barrel length. That said typically barrels for ducks and geese are longer (28" to 30") to get the last bit of velocity out of the load. Much under 26" and you start to lose velocity at a more rapid rate than from 26" to 30". The longer barrels also provide for a longer sight radius which is not a bad thing. If you get serious about goose hunting the SBE's are top of the heap for 3.5" shotguns and don't give up much to the 10 gauges when throwing a heavy load. Pat

Hmmm, must be a 26" barrel with maybe a 9 round magazine??? For some reason I was thinking the Practicals had a 24" barrel with a 7 round magazine....guess not. Thanks for the pics. Not my cup of tea...nice collection by the way. Was there a 21" to 24" vent ribbed or GRS barrel that was ported for 3-gun? The choke could have been ported it has been a long time since I saw the photo. Pat

squawberryman, Where do you get decent pricing on a CASE of Remington 00 buckshot? Unless a case is 5 boxes (25 rounds) the cost would be out of site in these parts. Pat

I saw photos of a Benelli practical shotgun several years ago but have not seen one in person and don't see them in publications any longer. Are they still available? Are the barrels available from a Benelli parts supplier or directly from Benelli? Pat

Look at the price and availability of shotgun shells. The 12 and 20 are available anywhere you should go and hunt. The 28 and 16 gauge may be much harder to find and will cost more per box (economies of scale). Pat

I believe that the M-4 barrels are 19", 19" or 19". The M4 design is specific to that gun and I have not seen a field gun based upon the M4 design. If you have choke tubes run what you have. I don't know that the Benelli stock shims would work on a fixed field stock. If they would, have the shotgun fit to you and run the short barrel with a modified choke. It will swing very fast but for upland birds that is not bad, For ducks and geese you will have to install a magazine limiter (plug) limiting the magazine to two. If you can float a shell on the carrier then the magazine should hold only one (the limit is three shells in your shotgun including the one in the chamber for migratory fowl). Pat

I've gotten to where I carry a SBE for chukars with a plus two mag extension as they tend to raise sequentially and the best shots are the third and fourth (anyway when shooting an over and under ). With as far and as much work as it takes to catch up to chuckars I hate to be standing there with an empty gun (the 7 shot guns don't swing fast enough...no matter how fast you try to unload it Pat

So what is the "best" choke for turkey hunting? I see extra full and extra extra full chokes. Do they help? Pat

So what shot are you planning to use? I tend to like the option of more shot over the heavier shot but if you are looking for penetration and distance the heavier shot may work better...what are your plans? Pat

To answer the question you would have to have a Benelli imported before 1989. The M4 was not even thought of back then. Some of the early M1S90's were imported by HK before this law went in to affect. For the US "produced" firearm I thought you had to replace three (one more than the M1S90's as the M4's have the gas pistons) parts. Would this not be the front handguard, follower, and magazine tube? Not sure where the 5 parts count came from but would certainly like to hear the reasoning. Yes, I have used the search function and came up with the three parts above based upon what I had read in previous posts. Pat

I thought that if one added enough US produced parts the shotgun is considered (under the law) a domestic produced firearm. The US produced parts in question would be the US produced 7 round magazine, a US produced follower, and a US produced forearm. Is this in fact the case? Pat

Locally...if you can find one, the M4's are selling for $1495, the 7 round magazine is right around $200 so for a NIB M4 locally you would expect to pay $1695 (plus 6% sales tax)....just a price check. Pat

Bump to top....can I safely trade an older bolt assembly for a newer one in the same model gun or do they have to be "fit" to the gun by a gunsmith? Pat

Are the M1S90 bolts interchangeable between M1's? Are SBE bolts interchangeable between SBE's? I found an older SBE in camo (goose gun) with a bolt that will allow you to ghost a round, my black SBE will not. Can I trade the bolts and carriers (complete assembly) with no safety issues(I don't need to ghost a round on a waterfowl gun and do not want to get into a hassle with the Fish and Wildlife service over 3 vs 4 round gun)? I also found a M1S90 that I believe I could swap bolts with the guy for very little to no $, will both shotguns still be safe to trade the bolt assemblies (same deal...it would allow me to ghost a round on the carrier)? Well I was installing my great Made in the USA M4 magazine tube when I launched the magazine spring and retaining clip. I found the spring but the clip is orbiting with the space station. Where can I get a (inexpensive) retaining clip or two and what does Benelli call it so I get the correct part? Thanks Pat
