  1. Stranger, That sling looks awesome. I Called GG&G a few months back and they said they are working on making a Sling Loop that will mount between the stock and Receiver of the M4 like they make for the other Benelli's. I am with both you and Duggan concerning the Issue with the stock and strapping in the sling. Totally screws the Cheek Weld, which is why I went with the Urban Sentry for the time being. Please post some pix of your set up with the Mesa Stock comes out, I am very interested.
  2. I mounted it in the Reverse set up, with the Lever on the Left Side of the Rail, away from the Dial. I did this backwards because I dont like how the nut is not accessible the other way, since its loc tited in. I called LaRue before i did it just to make sure it was cool, and they said its fine on either side. I havent had any problems yet.....or any surface damage. But I cant argue with Duggan that the rail isnt the best. I keep telling myself I will get one of Kips....but I keep forgetting.
  3. What happened?? Is that just from the tension you put on the Lever? I have the same set up on mine.
  4. Just curious if you guys know where I could secure a Black M4 Magazine Cap. Cant really seem to find any online.
  5. HA. Commiefornia is right. I am usually only buying 7.62 for LR, but havent heard anyone griping about not being able to score .22 rounds. I used to hit walmart for .45 APC and 12 guage rounds myself, but they seem to almost always be out of just about everything when I go in now. So I just go to a gun store out here that always has rounds of anything I want in stock. Prices arent bad, maybe $1-3 off what you would pay in the GI Joe/Goober gun stores that exist solely to provide 20 year olds with mock AK's and Bushmasters as their first rifles. These gun stores are a joke. I miss Virginia in that respect.
  6. Tinman: This guy wont listen to me. I tried to explain that a Scout is the perfect Middle Ground version ( I have one myself.) But He isnt interested in shooting anything that isnt 50 feet in front of him, so the SOCOM is exactly what he needs. Heres my Baby. Meet "Gina"
  7. Congrats Hookster!!!!! Thats an awesome rifle. Keep us posted on any of the Mod's you end up doing. Being a loaded version, I doubt you will need to do much. But you seem to have the obsession gene like myself, so I am sure there will be SOME minor mods Strangerdanger, that weapon looks awesome. Never seen a green on red laze like that. Nice job buddy.
  8. Skeeter, I think I gotta move to Texas man. You have all the toys I dream about. ha ha. Yep, thats the case. I got the OD Green one though, just to be different
  9. ha. Roger that. I was going to try and cut an insert that would fit both my M1A with attachments, as well as my M4 shot gun. Sounds like I have my work "cut out" for me. No pun intended!
  10. Thanks Tactical. I just bought the Pelican 1720 from optics planet (with foam.) It was only around 200 bucks with free shipping. Looks like a solid peice of gear. Do you have any experience cutting the foam yourself? I am assuming it comes with directions, or if I fudge it, I can get more foam later or something. I appreciate your quick reply.
  11. Just curious if any of you guys had some product suggestions specifically for flying with firearms? I am heading out to a remote location with some buddies this summer and am going to need to secure a solid gun case. Ideally I would like one I could pack a rifle and a side arm together, and still have some room left over for cleaning gear and extra clips. I Plan on making this purchase only once, so paying top $ is not going to anger me. Thanks as always.
  12. Function/reliability. I couldnt see SA putting a Lemon into production, but I guess he read a bunch of forums where people were warning each other about the difference. My assumption is that its just a web rumor that nobody really has proof of. Everyone I talked too that has a 16 loves it. He isnt an experienced shooter, and doesnt want to go for targets past 200yrds, so I told him dont even question himself. I knew you were about to have both sides of the spectrum to compare so figured I would ping you in case you ran into any performance issues. If you are buying another one.........my guess is thats a big fat NO.
  13. Good looking out, I will take a gander. Thanks for responding. Yeah, I read a little bit up on it and it sounds like the cynlinder is a little wider and the plug is bigger like you said. Let me know what you think......
  14. Hookster, My buddy is trying to buy a socom 16 and he says he keeps reading that the gas system is different than the standard m1a and the scout. Is that the case?
  15. I will take a stab at it: What military units use the Benelli M4? - The Marine Corps uses them, and my friends that pack them are big fans. Are there any other rail options for a tactical light other than that 300.00 one? - no impact no idea Who sells screw in chokes for these? - Trulock does http://www.trulockchokes.com/cgi-bin/eShop/index.cgi Who makes the best CQB sling fior this? I like the Urbany Sentry Set up. http://www.urbanertslings.com/single-point.html Who makes extra shell carriers that attach to the butt stoock or reciever? http://www.mesatactical.com/ Does Carrier Comp make the best tube extension? BTW I just bought one :-) I got one too, and its an excellent one, and Kip (to my knowledge) is the only one making the Desert Camo version. Another one the popped up on the Radar is: http://www.freedomfightertactical.com/
  16. Stranger, thats a lovely rifle man. Is that the larue tall boy you have set up under that aimpoint? How accurate has that been for you and to what distance have you really tried? Love you put the Troy Sights on too.
  17. ahhh I love when stuff like that happens!!! Congrats Hookster. With a rifle like that....you wont need magnification to be your friend!!
  18. Yeah, the Leupold was my first choice. I think the Mark 4 was the one I was looking at? But I have to learn how to use the Mildot system. I picked up the Mildot Master with the slide rule in case I do. You seen that? pretty cool for quick calculations. My challenge is picking a scope that lets me go from x10-45/60? pretty easily. Anything within 100yrds I can Iron Sight. But then again, if you ever have to use it as a combat weapon (which is the first purpose for all my weapons regardless) most of your targets are going to be within 100yrds. So I keep getting caught up there and second guessing my choices. I think Elcan makes a scope that you can just hit a switch and it goes from x1 to 600 yrd range? But then I convince myself I am limited past 600yrds. Pride Fowler also has some comparable scopes that do the same thing. Then I see posts from guys in Iraq/Afghan that insist you can put a ACOG for a 5.56 on the M1a, and still hit targets dead center at 800yrds. So, basically I am still at a loss. Scopes are so damn expensive i only want to do it once, and prefer to have the option of putting it on other rifles should I increase my family. Let me know what you end up doing for sure.
  19. Hookster I have never seen that one before. Which one were you going after? the picatinny? If they let you still use the irons, keep 1/2 MOA and keep the clearance needed for Brass.....sounds like we have a winner. I was focused on Sadlak specifically because of the Iron Sight use Capability (Plus I am a sucker for all things titanium.) I have never used a Scope in my life (Besides my Aimpoint T1.) Everything I have ever done has been Iron Sights, so I have been doing my research on all the different options, and have yet to decide which one I want. I want something that will stay effective at 300-800yrds without having to do a ton of Ballistic Calculations. So I am taking my time with that purchase. What sort of scope are you putting on your new Standard?
  20. Ha! Me and old Hookster live in Kalifornia.......we are lucky to even have 2nd Ammend Rights out here!! I hate that 10 day wait. Hookster, You cant go wrong with the weapon you purchased, or your intentions with it. I am looking forward to your experience with the rail once you get everything on it. I was going to put the Titanium Sadlak mount on mine but am holding off for a bit longer. Skeeter, I actually just checked my PMs, and saw I had one from both you and hookster. Sorry I missed them, I never looked. Yeah, that Forum can get kinda uppity sometimes. When i tried to use the word "Z0mbie" it put Thug in its place. WTF?? Regardless, its a great place to get knowledge on the weapons. I was pleasantly surprised to see hookster lurking over there too. All you boys have great taste in firearms!!
  21. My Understanding is the M14 was an actual service rifle used by the Marines. I believe the main difference was the coveted "Selector Switch" where you could put that bad boy on full auto. I believe there was some differences with the Gas System as well but not positive. The M1A is essentially the same thing but just the Civilian version (Minus the switch.) If you take the rifles apart they are pretty much identical. I wish I could give you a list of specific differences, but I lost the links on my browser recently. Springfield Armory has made a few different versions of the M1A. You have the National Match, Standard, Socom 16, Scout, Socom 2, and a couple others. Fundamentally they are all the same, with the main differences only being the barrel length/sight system and types of stock. But the receivers, bolts, Trigger Group, and other peices are all pretty much the same thing. It can be confusing at first because lots of manufacturers who make aftermarket parts will just say "M14" or "M1A" which would lead you to believe they are completely different. However, depending on how specific you are getting, they are pretty much the same. Hookster seems like a pretty knowledgable fellow, so he may be able to add or subtract some of my points. You gonna get one Skeeter? Fun rifles boy!
  22. The reason I made all the Mod's on my scout were purely out of obession. I wanted to make it more accurate, durable and personalized to my shooting style. Pretty much the same reason I found this forum and tweeked my M4. As I am sure you know, those rifles come pretty damn perfect. Some guys scoff at the upgrades people make, but its just a matter of taste. I have that exact book you mentioned, and can honestly say it is my bible. EXCELLENT peice of gear you should snatch up ASAP. I have taken that rifle completely apart and put back together and it has been indispensable. The reason I would do it different is because now I am more familiar with the weapon system and see where my upgrades were just purely redundant. I would just start over with a new build because the M14/M1a Platform is a very simple one. Instead of spending 2k on a standard model, you could spend the majority of that on upgrading the main peices. For example: A double Lugged receiver would let you use a free floating barrel. Standard Receiver wont. Which improves accuracy and consistency. All the mods I have done such as the cheek riser and bi pod mount , scope mount, etc you could just replace by getting a modified stock from the get go, and still have options of slapping other things on it later if you want too. You could just get a basic USGI Trigger Group and have it modified, or buy one that comes that way. All the smaller parts you can just buy as you go. Unfortunately I didnt have this knowledge up front, but the rifle still turned out great. I got a lot of satisfaction doing all the gunsmithing myself like it was a personal accomplishment. I hope I dont sound like I am telling you what to do, but I am sure you know that. Just wanted to throw it over the fence at you since you are on the cusp of getting a new one!
  23. Hookster, if I could do it all over again, I would just buy the peices separate and do a build from scratch. I have swapped out or modified everything on my Scout except for the Bolt and Barrel. The Reciever has a few mods, gas system is shimmed, new front sight post system, stock has been drilled in the Rear for cheek riser and front for the Front Rail to mount b****s, lots of the guts have been upgraded or replaced entirely. To me it would just be easier to get the exact peices of what you want up front and build the whole thing on your own. You may have different intentions though, cause I like the Walnut too
  24. Skeeter, If you are going to get the JAE Stock, might I suggest just peicing out the rest of the weapon? Just buy a Trigger group.....maybe a double lugged receiver and a free floating barrel and you are in business. To me its a waste to buy the supermatch if you arent going to use it in the glass bedded stock system like its meant to be. You would still be getting everything you need, just not wasting money you could otherwise be spending on 7.62
  25. Ipguy: I keep pushing the Urban Sentry Sling for the M4. You can configure it any way you want in a couple different styles very easily. Its pretty rugged too, I own one. Its a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. I had the Spectre on it and it just wasnt for me. Here is the urban sentry video that shows you how to config. Good luck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvCkFnfUCqI
