  1. I didn't think the rear tritium sights were worth much until I began using them at night. It isn't for aligning the sights. It's for indexing your face properly so you know you're looking through the ghost rings at the front post.

This is why the rear sights tritium is so small. They're tiny pin pricks. When it is practically pitch black out, you can't see the sights at all. Even with muscle memory putting your face in the proper location, it is hit or miss. You're not sure if you're looking over the top of the ghost ring or off to the side.

Thanks, that information is helpful. The Trijicon upgrade would be the front sight only. I don't think they offer the rear, I'll have to check again. Your description of the utility of the rear sights makes sense.

On some old posts I saw quite a few people bad mouthing the Meprolights as not being bright enough. Maybe I'll start out with the Meprolight and then upgrade to the front Trijicon if its not bright enough.

  2. Upon very careful reflection I can say the only thing I don't like about my stock M4 is the bolt charging handle. Fortunately, being a semi-auto, it cocks itself after the first shell. Still, my figure hurts after a day at the range and I'm developing a callous at the joint used to pull back the bolt. It's easy enough to replace it and we should have some high quality options available pretty soon.

  3. What I am doing is sending my front sight in to this company http://www.tooltechgunsight.com/ who does work for Trijicon. They will put the night sight module into the factory sight. All I want is a front sight anyway. Night sights for the rear are useless. I highly dought that I will be doing a long shot at night, it will be close and personal.

    Hope that helps.

How did your front sight upgrade turn out????

Did you opt for the white ring around the dot for the extra five bucks? Can you post any pictures? I'm considering the same upgrade and its a toss up between the Trijicon and Meprolight.

  4. I saw the R1 pictures and noticed the piston was really short and stubby compared to the pistons in the M4. The profile of the MR1 looked similar to the M4 and I was hoping for a different piston design. From the recent photos posted it looks like the MR1 will have the stubby piston similar to the R1. Oh well, I could dream couldn't I.

  5. Hey guys, I'm from the shotgun side. The pistons on the M4 shotgun look way different from the posted pictures. The M4 has twin pistons that are about 5"-6" long. They have multiple ribs with slots and move very freely in the piston sleeves. The M4 manual is very specific about NOT lubricating the piston. I suspect any oil residue would speed up the gunkification process.

I just saw the pictures of the MR1 Carbine and that may tempt me into my first rifle purchase. The body looks very similar to my M4. I'm curious as to what the gas pistons look like.

  6. Never considered myself an assault rifle kind of guy but I may have to get me one of these. I can send it off to Italy with my M4 and have them engraved as a limited edition matched set...set number 1 of 1. :D

Benelli MR1 Carbine (Civilian Beretta Rx4 Storm)

Benelli, not wanting to miss out, has entered the lucrative black rifle market with Benelli MR1 Carbine, a 5.56mm gas piston operated rifle.

    BENELLI-MR1-Carbine-tm.jpg

    Benelli MR1 Carbine

The MR1 Carbine is the civilian version of the Beretta Rx4 Storm. Benelli, a subsidiary of Beretta, designed the ARGO gas system used by the MR1/Rx4 and, at least in Italy, manufactured both the MR1 and the Rx4 Storm. I suspect that the MR1’s sold in the United States will be manufactured at the Beretta plant.

  7. Holy sh*t, I think I see a piece missing in this crazy expensive cleaning kit

Probably the Panda Fur bore swab or the vial of Sperm Whale Oil. I'm sure replacement parts are available and will be personally delivered by your Customer Service Valet.

  8. I thought I was pretty thorough in explaining what I did and what I was trying to do and what I realized.

One more time. I already cleaned the sleeves. I realize you dont' need to clean the actual ports raceway. But, I want to anyway. This is the question I asked.

Has anyone used anything to clean it. Not has anyone not cleaned it or left it.

I have not tried the dental pic. Thank you. That was closest to what I was looking for.

OK! I understand the words that are coming out of your mouth...

It does not appear the ports are cleaned by anyone so we are forging ahead to new territory. You may be able to clean the ports from inside the barrel with a right angle dentists brush. They are referred to as interdental or interproximal brushes. They come in a variety of diameters and some are conical in shape. I don't have a clue what diameter the port is but you may find something big enough to work (the first link shows standard passage hole diameters for each standard size brush) . I don't think I would recommend using a dental pick as it would scratch the **** out of the bore finishes in the piston sleeve and/or barrel.

  9. For what its worth. I was at Gander Mountain here in NE Ohio last night checking things out. They had Federal Tru-Ball Rifled Slugs for $3.49/Box of 5 plus Federal had a mail in rebate good for $2.00 off per box, limit of 5 boxes (The coupon was valid for other Federal slugs as well). They had ample stock and I thought Tru-Ball slugs were reasonably good quality. For a buck fifty a box all they have to do is go bang as far as I am concerned.

  10. Hmmm, I get the impression that the M4 is great for aimed fire but how about point shooting? I've handled one in the store and it seemed alright but unfortunately I can't really try before I buy.

That's the biggest concern to me actually, high speed point shooting with buck is most of a defensive shotgun's reason for being IMO and something it should be able to do well, all the rest is gravy.

The range I go to would not allow off the shoulder shooting with bird shot. Apparently the risk of shooting down the wire and target sled is greater with bird shot. I just purchased some 00 buck and some rifled slugs to test off the shoulder point shooting. The M4 is supposed to have very low felt recoil as compared to other shotguns so I am looking forward to trying it out. I think I found a good outdoor range nearby that I plan to check out this weekend or next as well.

I'm not sure what factors would affect point shooting other than recoil and shot pattern. Even at home defense distances I still think you need to aim. I was thinking a mounted flashlight with a strong center spot and diffuse ambient lighting would be the best point shooting guide but I have not looked into it yet.

  11. I used to run a .40cal bore-brush down the piston sleeves, that was the most I did there, just b/c I am OCD. It is not needed. You don't clean the gas-port on an AR do you? Thought not.

I suffer from CDO. It's like OCD but in alphabetical order like it should be!

I wipe off the pistons and run a cleaning patch through the piston sleeves. The instructions are really adamant about not oiling the pistons. I used some Hoppes oil as a solvent but used clean patches to remove most of the oil residue. I think oil interferes with the self-cleaning action and causes the residue to gunk up instead of pass through.

  12. The M4 was my first firearm purchase. I did a lot of research and I too was concerned about the price. I have two "gun buddies" that tried to talk me out of buying the M4. Being able to purchase multiple guns for the same amount of money was the exact argument they used. They were also concerned about the reliability of semi-auto shotguns and were concerned it would malfunction in a stressful situation. I looked at Mossberg pump guns in various formats but was not impressed at all. They looked really cheap. The stamped metal was poorly formed and the finish was wearing off on the action just from the sales clerks cycling it before handing it to a customer. I asked one of my friends, who is a big fan of pump guns, if he had ever short cycled a pump and he sheepishly admitted it happens occasionally. I really preferred a semiauto as I think it will be easier for me to use in a stressful situation.

The Benelli's fit and finish was superior to most other guns I examined. I seriously considered the Super Nova Pump from a purely economic standpoint. I like the M2 but a clerk at the local gun shop (he was one of the few that actually appeared knowledgeable) told me it needed to be solidly positioned against your body for it to cycle reliably. The M4 would cycle more reliably in unusual or awkward positions according to him.

I purchased the M4 and could not be happier. The first trip to the range was amazing. I had very little experience shooting shotguns, probably a total of 50 rounds decades ago in Boy Scouts. The first shot was a bulls eye and the second round practically went through the same hole. The two buddies that tried to talk me out of it loved it! Now they are just jealous. They kept referring to it as the "Frikken Nail Driver". We were shooting smiley faces and carving up the target it was so accurate. I never expected that level of accuracy out of the box.

Granted I do not have much to compare it against but I love it and it is very easy to shoot. The recoil is quite acceptable to me. I shot a couple hundred rounds of Highland Bird loads at the range with no discomfort at all.

My M4 is stone stock right now. I have a FL ti tube on order with Kip and I plan on purchasing his charger handle and muzzle brake when they are available. I really want to add a flashlight mount but have not seen one I like yet. I am considering a Trijicon tritium front sight and a red dot optic may be in the future.

My grandmother used to say "Buy the best and you will never be disappointed." I beleive there is substantial value in the M4 and it is worth the extra $$.

  13. Holy crap! This is the cleaning kit! Sterling Silver and horn. All custom made. The fricken cleaning kit cost more than my shotgun. Wow...I feel really poor now...time to buy a lottery ticket.

  14. Check out this price guide for 2008 from Fratelli Rizzini. Scroll down to the optional 410s and such. Crazy Town.

Here's a picture of an F illi Rizzini shotgun. I just found it in the back of my closet...under the wife's shoes...yeah that's the ticket...

I have to admit the engraving on this is almost photographic in quality. We're getting up to a price level that reminded me of an old Leica (really expensive 35mm German camera) promotion. They had a professional fisheye lens that cost almost $250,000.00. If you bought the lens the promotional giveaway was a free Volkswagon Sedan. Presumeably to haul the lens around in. And my wife thought my M4 was expensive:rolleyes:

  15. Wow! I can't even find any references for pricing. The closest thing I could find was an Executive III listed for $4,000. I would be seriously afraid to handle them for fear of finger marks and scratches. What's the top price any of you guys have ever seen one of these limited editions go for? What's the top end rarest of the rare?

  16. true..I have been around awhile now,,also true I love showing my legacys,,,,,triple tru,,the excuses to show them, theres a reason behind that,,,clue:something else rare as the legacys is comming,,,what could it be now????hhmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I'd need to buy some fancy furniture to display guns like that. Here is one of my favorites from Vigilant. You can even get one with a built in cigar humidor!

Better run a few hundred rounds through those to limber them up. Load them with 00 buck and leave one in the closet and one under the bed. I'm sure you can find some sort of clamp to attach a flashlight to them or maybe drill a few holes in them to adapt a sidearmor rail system.:p

Don't forget a mag extension and collapsible stock!

  18.

I'm thinking of getting the U.S. made FL tube from Tactical Shotgunner it might be ok for a temporary setup til Kip can get things together

    http://www.tacticalshotgunner.com/one-piece-replacement-tube-for-benelli-m1014-m11707-shotguns-p-196.html

    Hookster

The tube you linked to would be my second choice. It's made of chrome moly and would probably machine very nicely. If you are going to buy one of Kip's tubes eventually why not buy one of the TacStar cheapy +2 extensions? If you have any 922® issues it's way easier to ditch the +2 extension than disassemple an FL tube. That would give you full capacity and you wouldn't take as big a financial hit when you dump it later for Kip's tube. You could dump the used TacStar on GB and probably get most of your investment back. Just a thought...there is a recession going on. Mind the pennies and the dollars watch out for themselves.

  19. Do you have family, is this the main issue at hand? If so, why don't you all have a plan in case of a B&E to make sure you know where everyone is. Spend some time thinking about your floor-plan.

It's just me and the wife at this point. The kids are grown and the grand kids visit occasionally. The biggest concern is we live in an apartment. No real good way to coordinate with the neighbors or know where they are. The landlord told us the upper floors were concrete slabs but based on the noise I'm hearing from upstairs right now I kind of doubt it.

On a different note, I just ran into a former neighbor that does shotgun training for the local sheriff's department and the city police. They are considering switching to #4 Buck for both sheriff and police departments. Their testing led them to believe it was the best combination of stopping power, shot pattern, and low possibility of over penetration. The city cops are very concerned about over penetration here. About 5 years ago a police officer accidentally killed an innocent citizen when a pistol round missed the target and went through the wall of a nearby house. The round killed a man sleeping on his sofa. His young son was sleeping on top of him at the time. It caused a huge review of tactics and equipment.

  20. ...Take for instance the David Olofson case. He's doing prison time now, and for what?

I had to look up David Olofson on the Internet. I have to admit I never want to see that many hits on Google when I type in my name. For anyone else out of the loop Mr. Olofson loaned an AR semi-auto rifle to someone. When that person took it to a public range the rifle malfunctioned and fired short full auto bursts and then jammed. The rifle was not modified in any way and was about 15 years old. It was subject to a safety recall due to unregulated "hammer follow" firing. Mr Olofson was prosecuted and convicted of illegally "Transferring" an unregistered weapon. Since ATF is the sole arbitor of what constitutes a machine gun he was pretty much SOL. They initially declared the gun a rifle until some zealous young agent suggested trying soft primer ammo and voila a machine gun was born!
