  1. I agree with your analysis that there is no "practical" purpose in doing a mag dump. I'm not sure how often in any realistic defensive or offensive scenario it would ever happen.

The point of my video is to demonstrate how quickly the M4 Benelli action cycles. I've read elsewhere people saying the Benelli M4 is not "fast" but actually "slow" ... not sure even what that means if we are measuring in milliseconds, but...I think the M4 more than holds its own when it comes to cycling speed, as my video demonstrates. No doubt others could get off shots even more quickly.

As for the situation you describe of the hammer down on a live round, that's only happened to me when ghost loading trying to fire it it this fast, never on a sequence with one in chamber and seven or whatever in the tube.

Not sure why that is, still waiting to hear from SD on his theories about it.

  2. Yes, agree, some felt that somehow the concept that deadly force may result when carrying a weapon was an odd idea. On the other hand, the emphasis on "stopping the threat" as opposed to "killing" was wise advice and the right way to proceed.

The article generated a lot of helpful and interesting conversation about some basic considerations when making a decision to carry a weapon. I think the discussion on "The Firing Line" was the most helpful, and other places as well, can't quite remember. Led me to do a rewrite taking into account several of the comments/suggestions, which version was then posted in the comments over at TTAG's web site.

  3. No, actually, the paper was hit by all eight shots, I was about thirty feet away, 10 yards.

We have a great gun club where you are allowed to shoot anything from full auto on down. No explosive rounds or targets and no tracers, and no shooting steel with rifle rounds, but other than that...you are good to go.

  4. The action can certainly be outran. As the bolt carrier begins to close and the shell elevator drops, the hammer can fall because it is no longer being held down or by the disconnector. So there is about 1.5 inches of bolt travel where the hammer can fall and ride the bolt carrier into battery. You then have a live round in the chamber with the hammer forward.

Fortunately, this issue is only a problem when screwing around.

Like I said, the only time it's happened to me is when trying to shoot it as fast as I can possibly pull the trigger, with a round on the carrier after ghost loading it.
