M4 - Free Carrier Operation

Good question, something I do not really have a good answer for ...

 

If I had to guess, I'd say that the shell being held down by the BCG cycling above it keeps the lifter down, and the lifter being held down for the rearwards cycle period makes the BCG skip the notch that normally would activate the shell release and trip the lifter on the next cycle forward.

 

If that makes any sense at all that is, I'm tired and haven't fired my m4 in awhile.
