Mudhen - Why Browning can sell the Maxus for more than the silver even though it cost less to produce is simple.......called percieved value. Most of us have no idea what the actual manufacturing costs of our firearms are, so pricing is always in the hands of the seller.

I asked why they do it, not why can they can get away with it.

Because people allow them to get away with it. If no one questions the manufacturer, then there is no reason why they shouldn't mark up the price.
