SBE to M2 or M4 compatibility

I’ve watched a lot of videos comparing the M2 to the M4, so Ive learned about the differences, but can’t figure out my specific question.

I have a SBE 1 from 1999.
I want to get a tactical SG and prefer to stick with Benelli. I have acquired several spare parts such as bolt rebuild kits and recoil springs for my SBE. And I have put a light rail/ sling mount ring from GG&G that I would like to transfer over to my dedicated tactical SG.
Which of the two tactical models, M2 or M4, is most compatible with my SBE? I’d guess and say the M2 is because it is inertia driven like my SBE. The M4 is a gas operated system. So I’m leaning towards getting an M2 for compatibility and I already know how to disassemble, clean and work on it. The M2 has a nicer price point as well.
What am I missing. Is the M4 just as compatible, if not more, with my SBE?

Thanks
