Begle1 Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 I'm considering getting an R1, but I'd need to use it to hunt in muddy, wet, rainforesty-type conditions for a couple days at a time. How does the R1 do in mud and rain? How is the finish? Are there any rust issues with the R1 or other things that should cause me to reconsider? I've been using a stainless/composite bolt action and a stainless/composite Mini30. I'm hoping that the R1 could fill the niche of both of those rifles... But if I'm going to destroy it the first time it gets soaked in a downpour, then I'll hold off. Quote
Planetcat Posted September 28, 2024 Posted September 28, 2024 The matte black finish is very much like cerakote-very durable and weather proof. Obviously the synthetic stocks are as well. The blued/wooden stock models would not be as good. Although, I’d had my original R1 blued model for about 15 years and it’s been in pouring rain hunts with no adverse effects. I just wipe it clean and dry as soon as I can. My safe has a dehumidifier, too. Quote
Begle1 Posted October 9, 2024 Author Posted October 9, 2024 Thanks! So the synthetic stock models have a matte black finish while the wood stock models are blued? Quote
Planetcat Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 My wood model is 15 years old. Not sure about the newer ones. My .338 wm is synthetic and the coating on the metal parts is very durable. I believe the receiver is aluminum too. The nice thing about the synth models is that they have the comfortech stocks. I can tell you that it reduces felt recoil over the wood models. Quote
