    Surefire M80 Forend Review

    No, I just got the M80 this afternoon so I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. I've looked around but didn't see any posts about binding problems. Do you have links to accounts of problems? It looks like the gas pistons/rods have enough play room. I haven't tried changing the switch position but I'm pretty happy with where it's at. Even with the enlarged grip size, the switch position still feels very natural to use.

    Surefire M80 Forend Review

    Hey All,

    Well, I finally got my Surefire M80 picatinny rail forend today (many thanks to MeanGreen for the lead). Anyway, I thought I'd share some thoughts on it as well as some pictures. As most of you probably know I'm looking at using it simply as a forend grip that would be a U.S. made 922r compliant part that would also allow me to keep my Sidearmor rail system. I don't intend at this time to mount any accessories to it although from looking at it, if I were to mount my Streamlight TLR-1 to the right side it doesn't look like I'd have the problems StrangerDanger had with his hand hitting the backplate/wire plug area of his Surefire light (I believe it was a X300) due to the Streamlight having a 90 degree plug and smaller backplate projection

     

    So, as far as being a forend that I can use in conjunction with my Sidearmor rail, I'm very happy with it. I had been concerned about weight before but it only adds 2.9oz after removing the weight of the stock grips. Additional weight on top of that would depend on your choice of rail covers.

     

    The other issue that has been raised is hand comfort/grip feel. I've tried a few combinations of rail coverings already and they're included in the pictures. I believe the combination that StrangerDanger recommended was Magpul XTMs at the 6 oclock and ladder rails at 3 and 9 (3 ladder rails are included with the forearm). I found this fine too and probably the closest to the circumference of the stock grips. I also tried and like the XTMs on all three sides. I bought enough to completely cover all three sides but three panels per side seems more than enough to grip. Any extra would just be adding weight. This will probably be the combination I'll be using for now. It does make for a fairly fat grip but I have large hands and thought it had a good feel.

     

    Overall I find it more comfortable than the KZ which I reviewed here:

    But depending what your after in a U.S. made forend the KZ may be a better choice for mounting options etc.

     

    So in closing, If the Mesa "Urbino" U.S. made stock that MeanGreen posted comes out and is of good quality I would probably go back to my stock Benelli grips instead of Surefire or KZ but until then I think I'll be fine with the Surefire.

    One question for a newbie. My ghost ring sights have the kind of night sights that will glow if you charge them with a light source, is this standard on all M4's?

    Welcome Flya, Yeah, I wasn't real impressed with the stock night sights and replaced mine right away with the Meprolights. They're nice and bright tritiums. You'll want a 5.5mm wrench to change out the front post.

    KZ U.S. made forearm review

    I'm glad your fit issue is resolved. Nothing worse than spending money on a part and then having some kind of issue. I really think the KZ is a good option for a U.S made forend. I'm just looking at the Surefire right now because it would allow me to have a U.S. made forend and keep my Sidearmor rail but if it gets too heavy with the M80 I may go back to the KZ.

    The manual just lists runtime as 2-3 years under normal use. It doesn't have a switch so it's constantly on and comes with a cover to reduce drain on the battery when it's in bright light and not being used. The Trijicon site lists a 26 week lead time on the wings for the mount for some reason and I haven't found them in stock anywhere else so that's kinda irksome. Anyway, just looking at options still. It would be nice if I could find one low enough to co-witness. BTW your AR build is looking fine

    Winchester Military 12ga Ammo

    Hey All,

    Does anyone know if the Winchester Military Grade 12ga 00 buckshot pictured here is lead or steel shot?

    I just got some and assumed it was lead but just read a post on another site saying that military 12 ga.shells were steel. I've also seen some conflicting info on velocity. Midway USA (where I got it from) says it's 1325 and on the Cabela's site it says 1450. Does anyone have much experience with this stuff and have an opinion on it? good/bad/average?

    Thanks for all the specs!! weight on the M80 is not quite as bad as I thought it might be. But, like you said the rail covers choice will affect things. I have both magpul xtms and ladder rails standing by.

     

    The Larue mount with the Pride-Fowler is the lowest profile of the iron dot styles that they offer but looking at the scale in the picture with the quarter, I think it's doubtful that it would co-witness. I'm also now looking at this Trijicon red dot that only weighs .5 oz and will take 5000G impact.

    Hi Mark, short answer=no. It would have to have a conventional (non pistol grip) stock OR the pistol grip stock and some type of disabled mag release making it a "non detachable magazine". (like the bullet button or prince 50 setups used on CA legal AR builds on off list receivers)

    Congrats on the night coyote hit. I just picked up a bunch of Lake City M885 green tip. Maybe I'll take another look at the Vortex after I have a chance to flash test the ammo at night.

     

    The only thing slowing me down on the T1 at all is size/weight. I'm trying to see what options would be more low profile and lighter like the one I posted above from the Larue site. Part of my thinking with that is that if I end up using a Surefire M80 as a forend (for 922r) in addition to the Sidearmor I'll be adding some weight and I might want to save some more somewhere else. I haven't found a weight listed anywhere for the M80 though so I'm not sure how much more it weighs than the stock forend. I'll just have to wait till it arrives. Anyone have experience with Pride-Fowler stuff?
