  1. My M1 field came with a 24" barrel which after shooting it this past weekend and dove yesterday, seems a little short. I really don't want to shell out the $$$ for a new barrel, so the "you know your a redneck" when adding an extended choke makes you think you have a longer barrel. My question is; is a patternmaster worth twice the money of a Briley or Trulock...and do you go ported or not? Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks, Mc

Ported or not Ported depends on the ammo you intend to use. I had horrible results with Federal Ammo that uses the FLITECONTROL® wad with a ported choke. Extended choke tubes would give you more length but it all depends on the constriction for patterns. You will want a pretty open choke for dove and I'm guessing you were shooting clays over the weekend. I cant recommend the Patternmaster Extended chokes because I do not own one, but it is designed to have a tight pattern and for use with 3.5" ammo, so from what you have described as your intended use of your shotgun I think you might want to consider a different choke that is more open. What were the actual problems or dislikes you had using your 24" barrel?

  2. I have a benelli supernova with a carlsons rifled choke tube and I was wondering if anyone has tried this setup and what slugs would be best to shoot out of this combo. I contacted hornady (the bastards) and they told me strickly Their saboted slugs would not stabalize and DO not shoot them out of my choke. I continued to contact carlsons the next day and they said their choke was made of a high grade material and would withstand anything (speed, size, consistancy) if it said slug on the box. I was wondering if Any of you have tried the remmy accutip slugs yet? Thanks

My Carlson's rifled choke is in the mail and I cant wait to get it, should be here any day. I am going to be hunting black bear with it this weekend, and will be using Brenneke Black Magic 600 gr slugs. These slugs work out of a smooth bore or a rifled barrel. If your going to be hunting deer, those Hornady SST slugs should work great for you, what was their reason for the SSTs to not work out of the Carlson's rifled choke? It will be fine, do some pattern testing. Another slug you could use with the choke are the Brenneke Gold Magnums, I have not tried the AccuTips yet but I have some friends that go nuts over them. Let me know how your pattern tests go and I will let you know how the Gold Magnums pattern on my SuperNova with the Carlson's rifled choke. From what I have read all sabot slugs will work out of a rifled barrel (preferred for long distance shots) or a rifled choke (not as accurate as the fully rifled barrel but allows you to use the sabots). Good luck and talk soon.

  3. First of, it is nice of you to try to do something nice for him, but I would make sure he wants a camera crew to follow him around and tell him to wait to shoot so they can get a good shot and possibly scare the game. Then I would PM a moderator like nelligirl with this request.

Yeah I messaged him about it and apologized for my actions in advance, I just would love to hear his advice first hand as he takes down big game after big game. You are totally right and I hope I didn't offend him or anyone else. Just thought the poll would be nice, to see who else out there loves his stories and pictures, but your probably right, having a film crew there would probably tick him off.

  5. thanks, tyson. I have the 300wsm held for a couple of weeks. i would like to see the right person get the gun at that price. a comfortech 3006 or 308 would cost me $1100 to $1250 here. hope we can trade somehow.

Waiting on a quote right now in 308 for you. I will see how that quote sounds and let you know. If its in a good range I will have them look for the 30-06 for you. Figured let them find one at a time and really do their research.

  6. Anyone else who was wondering about other Benelli Rifled choke options you can also get a Hastings Paradox Sabot Discarding Choke (5") from:

    http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=144841&utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=free&utm_campaign=655

And if you wanted a Permanent Rifled Choke with 8 Other Settings you could get a Poly-Choke Adjustable Shotgun Choke (3-5 day Turnaround):

  7. tyson thanks for your answer, let me try and clear up my post.

    1. which barrels can i buy (if availabe) if I bought a wsm version such as 300wsm.

    2.which barrels can i buy (if availabe) if I bought a 300 win, 308, or 30.06

It is my understanding that not all barrels interchangable. please correct me if I am wrong.

I don't have a gun for sale but can aquire a 300wsm in cofortech for 800 possibly lower brand new in the box with all paperwork, shims and picatinny rail. They also have a 270wsm and a 300wsm in wood.

If someone is in the market for this gun, I am in the market for a 30.06, 308 or maybe a 300 win if barrel compatibility exist to change a between these.

I hope, No I dream to find a r1 in 30.06 comfortech at a similar price. You might can or come close enough.

Not much use for a 300wsm here in alabama (thats my veiw anyway) but some dealer in alaska may have a 308 or 30.06 he cant get rid of. Please find that gun and lets work a trade.

From what I have read the barrels are interchangeable so that the shooter can change calibers. The barrels are crazy expensive just like everything Benelli (Around $700!) I will look around for a 308. 30-06 for you since you can get the 300. They should have them up here in Maine because those are very popular calibers and I would love a 300 wsm, let me just check on the prices for you. Talk soon

  8. thanks

Things i will be hunting probably are: deer, turkey, dove, squriel, duck, and maybe shooting some clay pigeons.

With your rifled barrel hunting deer I would recommend Hornady SST (my favorite for deer slugs)http://www.hornady.com/story.php?s=148, Brenekne Gold Magnum 3"(accurate and deadly take down within 100 yrds)http://www.brennekeusa.com/startlink.html, and the Remington Premier® AccuTip Bonded Sabot Slug(I haven't used them but my friends love them)http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/shotshell/slugs/accuTip_bonded_sabot_slug.asp. Test them out and see which gives you the best reslults.

For your smooth bore hunting deer I would use Federal Premium Vital-Shok 00 buck and 000 buck for thick brush and heavy wooded areas, although going with smaller buckshot would also do the trick.

For Turkey I recommend Winchester Supreme Turkey #6: http://www.winchester.com/products/catalog/shotdetail.aspx?symbol=STH12356&bn=5&use=12

You can see my results with my SuperNova with a ported Carlson's .665 Turkey choke @ 20 yards in the turkey section with more photos and distances soon to be posted but here is the link to the pattern: http://s584.photobucket.com/albums/ss287/tyson129/?action=view&current=100_1728.jpg

For Squirrel and Clays any game load should work fine, $20 for 100 shell box of federal or Winchester loads at Walmart.

For Dove I would use your favorite ammo brand in #8 with a really open choke. Ask Trapshooter1 because he knows more about this than I do because I don't hunt them, I'm a Woodcock, Partridge, Quail, and Pheasant guy.

For Duck you may want to refer to the waterfowl section of the Benelli Forum because there has been debate over a lot of the rounds.

A really good load that works great out of my Dad's SBE and all our other 12Ga shotguns are Nitro Mag® Buffered Magnum Loads. They are a great game load with a lot of different options, check them out here: http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/shotshell/turkey/nitro-Mag_buffered_magnum.asp

  9. Run some solvent through the barrel with the choke in, let it sit while you take care of the rest of the gun. apply a light coat of oil in the action to keep it smooth. Then take out the choke, use a cleaning patch with oil on it to wipe of the dirt, then put a few drops of oil on the threads and re install. Then run a dry patch through the barrel to get rid of the solvent. Then run the bore brush through a couple times to scrape of the hard stuff and plastic from the wads. Then run patches wet with oil down the barrel until they no longer have black on them.

+1 Very thorough explanation and good tip about buildup removal in your second post. Very important stuff for keeping your gun in great condition and getting optimal patterns.

  10. I would recommend Hoppes because it is a brand that I use and feel offers a great product. I'm not saying that it is the best but here are some links.

    Deluxe cleaning kit:

    http://www.theconsumerlink.com/product_detail.asp?BID=HOPPES&T1=TCL+BUOX&navStart=133&.

If you just want the shotgun cleaning kit:

    http://www.theconsumerlink.com/HOPPES/detail/TCL+HOP30+12+B/139

For the very best that they offer in a kit I would get this (but make sure you select shotgun as the cartridge when ordering it online):

Best of luck and welcome to Benelli! :D

  11. The porting stops the wad and deforms the wad, along with the shot, especially with that tight of a choke. If you would please, try the tightest non ported choke you have with the fed. HD at the same range and show us the results. I would recommend federal high velocity lead, It probably penetrates similar to standard velocity HD shot, and there is almost twice the actual pellets. Good info so far, thanks for sharing your results.

Thanks for the tip Trapshooter1. I never saw anywhere on the box and web reviews or even thought that the ported choke would distort the wad that much. Any reccomendations for a choke that would work better for the Heavy Weight Mag Turkey rounds for anyone who is interested (Brand/Model)? I think I'm going to stick with the Winchester Supreme Turkey #6 loads on my setup because the results were amazing shot after shot. I will post some more pics up from 10 to 60 yards because they are about $12-$14 per box of 10, which is half the cost for twice as many rounds....I really enjoy Federal rounds but I'm going to go with what ammo I'm getting the best results with on my setup. Thanks for you help and photo.

  12. We got a hit on my buddy's bait site, turns out its a sow with cubs. Glad its not on my site because that would be it, unless a big boar comes in because what I hear is that no small or juvenile male bears will come in with a sow and cubs on a site. We already made an agreement that no one takes a sow with cubs or cubs...because that is our future of bear hunting and in my opinion its just not right....too bad for my hunting buddy and the cubs, going to check/refill my bait, hoping to see some good sign. Unloading a barrel of grease and a barrel of bread/donuts tomorrow at my site. Let you guys know the outcome...its officially bear season!!!!!!!Finally!!!!!!!! Who knows, I might get one on the walk out :D!

  13. I was not impressed at all with the $27.99 for 5 round box of the Federal Premium Heavy weight #5. The best results were with Winchester Supreme High Velocity Turkey #6 loads but here are the results. This is from a SuperNova with a Carlson's Ported .665 Turkey Choke. You may get different results from different guns and chokes but this is what I got. I will continue testing and update the links to Photos when I get on my computer that has all my programs. Hope this helps.

Sorry I did not do test at longer ranges but the time was limited and I still needed to get my model 700 safari addition .257 Roberts sighted in with its new scope which is a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5 x 20 x 50mm shooting Hornady SST light mag 117 gr @ 3,000 fps. Got it to a 2 inch group at a little over 100 yards. Still a lot of testing to be done before bear, turkey, and deer seasons but I will keep updating as I go. Happy Hunting and I hope this helps. 40 yard + shot pics coming soon for the Turkey Loads!

  14. My SuperNova is very smooth, I would reccomend shooting at least 100 rounds at clays like you said when you go out and when you get home take it apart clean and oil it again. You should notice quite a bit of difference even though 100 rounds isnt that much but the use will help break it in. Remember this gun was built like a tank so it has a lot different feel than other shotguns (at least some I have shot) but once you get used to it I think your perspective will change. The only thing that pisses me off about the SuperNova is the slight rattle that occurs from the wiggle of the pump but that's pretty minor, and its all worth it knowing you can throw it around and drag it through **** and back without any worries. Best of luck and let us know if your gun breaks in nice.

  15. OO, that why you want 600 grainers.

Yeah. Those should def do the trick :). Hey do any of you guys have any advice on the best rifled choke for a SuperNova? I'm going to pick up a Carlson' rifled choke because I have enjoyed their products but would really like to know if any of you have tried any others for the SuperNova. I will be @ Cabelas tomorrow morning by 9 a.m. so if anyone could get back to me tonight I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
