  1. Is it a Legacy or a Legacy Sport 12 Ga? Any other details you could share?

You have the opportunity to get one of my favorite Benellis! I love shooting my Dads, it is so well balanced and what a Beautiful Gun! The swing is so smooth and I am a fan of Guns with real wood especially AA-Grade Satin Walnut! IMO You can't go wrong with this investment!

  2. Ok, I'm back...I have an opportunity to purchase a Legacy 12ga w/26" barrel. No other parts but in MINT condition. Is $1100 a buy or not?

    Thanks, JMc

Great to see you Back McDaddy :D! You should get it, its $659 under retail if its the Legacy and $1,169 under retail if its the Legacy Sport(Give or take depending on the year, engravings, other features)! I think that is a Great Price for a Legacy! Where did you find that kind of a deal? What does it have for engravings?

  3. Those look like some hard kickers 4oz is way overkill though. How much do they drop at 100 yards sighted in at 50?

I have mine sighted in at 88 yards which is the recommended ideal range for sighting in the 3" Black Magics. The Trajectory is as follows:

    Muzzle: -2.0"

    25 yrds: +.4"

    50 yrds: +1.6"

    75 yrds: +1.0"

    100 yrds: -1.5"

So as you can see they start to drop really fast after 75 yards. Hope this helps, and to answer you question -1.5" if sighted in at 88 yards (Use a range finder).

But this is really not that bad of a trajectory if you think about it because from muzzle to 50 yards you have 3.6" of play and from 50 to 100 yards you have 3.1" of play, but when you look at the big picture you are probably going to shoot something between 25 and 75 yards which is only .6" to 1.2" of vertical play.

Hunt Hard and Have Fun! :)

  4. This may have been addressed already, but are you using the 3" with the slugs?

    Thanks

I use the 3" Brenneke Black Magics right now for Bear Hunting but a 2-3/4" Black Magic will drop a deer no prob.

Glad you are finding this site Helpful! I love it when people get into the outdoors and especially when they start hunting! Have fun making your choices and do a little research on some sites that carry slugs such as Federal, Hornady, Winchester, Remington, Brenneke, and anything else your search engine will turn up. Your research has just begun!

Good Luck Hunting and Be Safe! :)

  5. Buckshot is not legal to hunt deer in Indiana.

I can't believe Buckshot is not legal for hunting deer in Indiana!! You guys must have fired Buckshot before and seen the range and patterns it has at the different yardages..right? Its a super tight pattern and has a great range! Funny that you can't use any kind of rifle unless they use a handgun cartridge there either! Your state is limited to hunting with bows, slug guns, handguns with the legal calibers, and rifles that shoot handgun cartridges with the legal handgun calibers.

    Great deer, Odd rules.

  6. Get the gun you'd like to be shooting 20 years from now, if possible.

I like your perspective on this :). But at the same time, 20 years from now I would like to be shooting that eras weapons, and in 20 years my collection will be much more extensive :D. For now he should just get the Nova or SuperNova and not feel the burn of regret.

  7. Is his P90 full auto? Cause if so you should pm me with his contact info. I have wanted one for a while. Love the 5.7 caliber. It would go great with the FN 5.7 I'm getting soon. Just need to stop by the town office and pay the $200 for my full auto license. But that wouldn't be a big deal if he has a full auto P90.

    Thanks

  8. Yup VERY NEW - as in a rookie. I am in Canada and I have yet to go on my first hunt. You seem to have a wealth of knowledge... most people are swaying me to go with a riffled barrel but I'm interested in what you have to say. I need to learn more about smooth bore vs riffled and buckshot vs slugs... I've even read a few articles from Field and Stream and the like and they discourage buckshot

I will take my time... and continue to research. I don't want to buy another gun so I want to be happy!

btw, are you using the 3.5 shells with buckshot or 3?

Canada ay, what part? If your on the East Coast that would make us almost neighbors, I live in Maine. Def take your time picking out your shotgun.....although deer season is coming up real soon and your going to have to get out there, get use to your gun and start pattern testing.

I am using 3.5" 00 and/or 000 Buckshot but I stagger my rounds. If I am in one of my tree stands I will have a Slug followed by Buckshot followed by a Slug and the last one will be Buckshot.

Shotguns come with two different types of barrels, smoothbore and rifled. So unless you choose the rifled barrel model you are going to get a smoothbore as this is the most common type of shotgun barrel.

PM me if you have any questions. Always Glad to see a new Hunter!

Good Luck and Happy Hunting! :)

  9. Are you the type of person that pictures yourself clearing a room before turning the light on, if this is the case you would be better off IMO with a laser in most cases. Ghost sights are probably your best bet...The other HD shotgun owners on this Forum will tell you everything you need to know and more, brands included.

    Good Luck :)

  10. I'll tell you what' holding me back from the Benelli and making me lean toward a Moss or Rem combo - NO RIFFLED BARREL - and the more I read the more I realize that to properly take down a deer you need a rifled barrel with sabot slugs... I don't want to spend $400 additional dollars on top of the 550 for the Nova.. so I am probably not going to go with it... the accuracy is lacking otherwise... and I will target deer.

I'd someone can give me a really good reason to change my mind, feel free...

I am an avid deer hunter and you don't need Sabot slugs to accurately take down a deer. I have dropped many deer with buckshot. Please don't take offense to this but you sound new to deer hunting, unless you live in a state that only permits the hunting of deer with a shotgun or you are hunting areas that you would need to make 150 to 200 yard shots than yeah you would want to get a Slug Gun and your biggest worry next will be the multiple hundred dollar scope that you are going to attach to your shotgun to even make those shots possible. But you listed off a bunch of game which made me believe that you wanted versatility. I will be using my SuperNova for all of my stands that are setup for 100 yard or less shots and my rifle for hunting open territory. What range do you picture yourself shooting deer at?

Furthermore to "properly take down" a deer you need to place a shot in the vitals, spine, or break their front shoulders which would also most likely hit the vitals- in other words make a clean shot. You can use many different loads other than slugs on deer such as Buckshot. You get into the thick woods with some 3.5" 00 or 000 buckshot and you are going to drop a deer with a well placed shot. You are going to def need to get out there and pattern your gun for each ammo you decide to use for each of the game you have specified that you will be going after this fall before going out into the field.

Best of luck and I hope you make a good choice...and don't forget about rifled chokes like the one I use on my SuperNova from Carlon's Chokes that gives me 1/2" groups at over 50 yards with Brenneke Black Magic 3" 600 gr slugs which were made for smooth bore or rifled barrels (That's right 1/2" groups at over 50 yards through a smooth bore barrel with a rifled choke- so there is a reason to get the smooth bore Nova or you could just buy the Nova with a rifled barrel). I use Black Magics for Hunting Bear, and I trust my life with them. Maybe down the road you will be ready for a Benelli, but you came to a place that has people that live for Benelli and have it running through their veins, so what shotgun company did you expect for recommendations from here?

Happy Hunting and Be Safe! :)

  11. Get the SuperNova, or at least the Nova. You will be happy, and hellll your leaning towards a Benelli anyways, you did join the forum for advice from Benelli owners. You are basically begging to be talked into getting the gun you really want! So cut the crap and get yourself the real deal. Go with the Nova, and if you like that pay a little more and get the SuperNova....You will not regret it and for a little piece of mind, I take all species with my SuperNova that I have the opportunity at. It has not failed to take Turkeys, Partridge/Woodcock/Pheasant, Coyote, Porcupine, Squirrels (Red and Gray), Canada Geese, Ducks...you get the point and that has just been since May 2009.

Happy Hunting and be Safe! :)

  12. dude, where do you get these? do you order them online or does your local retail sell theM?

I use to get them from Cabelas and I do recommend it if you don't have a local store that sells them. They are $8.00 a box plus shipping and they are the BMM (Black Magic Magnum) on the Brenneke slug section, just make sure you pick out the right size (12 GA 3" or 2-3/4"). Now a local store carries them for $8.22 so its cheaper and more convienient.

Notice on the recovered slug how their wad is still attached to the slug, its just pushed down. The other 2-3/4" I shot got away but I did find the Wad. I will shoot a 3" at some Books and take a picture, I haven't seen one yet so I am pretty excited to see one all mushroomed out because it is much bigger when you compare the two.

Good Luck and Get a Box! I think the 2-3/4" will be perfect for your deer hunting this year since you are shooting within 80 yards and the kick is not bad at all. I will post the 3" once I get out there and shoot some more, have to go out soon and finish sighting in my rifle with the new Leupold Vari-X III 3.5 x 10 x 50mm with Lens Shade.

    Happy Hunting :)

  13. Since We have been talking a lot about the Black Magics I thought I would post some pics. So here are the before and after of this family of slugs. Haven't made much effort to recover a 3" but I did get a 2-3/4" so here they are. I hope this helps in some way.

  14. Inspired by Steves story I got myself a brand new Benelli R1 30.06 this summer. This is my first kill with it. This buck came up on me at 45 yards. One shot with a 150 grs Federal Fusion and it dropped at the spot.

For some reason I am unable to link picture in this post until I reach 5 postings. Check out my public album.

Why did you put that camo red dot on the beautiful black R1? Oh well got the job done, Great Job and Congrats!

  15. Here is a link to the difference in the 3" Black Magics to the 2-3/4" Black Magics out of the SuperNova with a Carlson's rifled Choke with the TruGlo red dot sight at 50 yards. I am a little pissed because I was rushed and only brought one 3" Black Magic and a full box of 2-3/4" so there is only one hole for the 3" and 2 for the 2-3/4" shots. Sorry but here are the results. There was a difference in the shots, the 2-3/4" shots were higher, here is the link:

    picture.php?albumid=30&pictureid=143

I am a little perplexed due to the fact that the 2-3/4" shots should have hit .4 inches lower than the 3" and they are traveling almost 500 fps slower than the 3" shots. So I guess that the size of the cartridge and the chamber do play a factor in the patterns, as Trapshooter suggested. Pretty cool results and I am happy to have learned something new.

With that being said I would like to confirm a practice that I think every hunter should do before going out to the field and that is to sight their gun for the ammo that they will be shooting during the hunt. This is so important and much overlooked in many cases. Most people think that their gun is sighted in and every round no matter the brand or design will shoot dead on the mark. This test demonstrates that even at a short distance like this (50 yards) that it does make a huge difference. Notice that the 2-3/4" shots were 3 and 4 inches high at 50 yards and they shoot 1" groups exactly (Not Good)! My 600 gr 3" Black Magics get 1/2" groups and under at this range so it appears that my SuperNova likes the 3" Black Magics much better.

My gun was sighted in for the 3" rounds which is why it is within the kill zone while the other smaller rounds are high and could be lethal but not at a comfortable zone I would prefer.

Hope this helps, I know it helped me and continues to reinforce the fact that you must always sight in your gun for the ammo you will be hunting with.

Happy Hunting and a Big Thanks to Trapshooter for the tip that I investigated which turned out being 100% correct. Good going Trapshooter!
