Any ideas as to how to re-assemble and mate the upper receiver to the lower one?

 

I'm having particular difficulties fitting those two projections (on the bottom of the bolt carrier) into the lower receiver.

Didn't you get the manual with the MR1? They explain how this is done and when I followed the instructions it went together easily. Get the manual if you don't have one.

With both of the rifles, you need to lower the bolt part way as you fit the stock and the barrel parts together. That means lining up the bolt into the stock spring so that you can lower the bolt by pushing it back into the spring. It will fit together flush than, otherwise with the bolt up, it won't allow the pieces to join, so lower that bolt part way and than it will clasp together. Than pull the barrel down and it will slide right on. The R1 is actually a bit tough, whereas your gun there is not that bad. I've put an MR1 together and it was easier to assemble. It should be a breeze, but that is the secret, lower the bolt as you slide the pieces together.
