mpd3587
Hello, new guy here. Please be gentle... Picked up my first Benelli (M4. Very Nice) yesterday. Broke it down today to clean and oil it before I go break it in, and noticed a small peened area on the corner of the chrome part of the barrel extension. Looks like it got whacked into something at some point. The mark doesn't appear to be anywhere that would affect lockup and i THINK it is only cosmetic. Normally, I'd just dress it down and polish away the raised edge, but its chromed and I don't want to create a real issue cleaning up something cosmetic. I'm going to shoot this gun. A lot. It's going to get dinged up. So, my newbie question, is this where someone dropped this barrel at some point and purely a cosmetic issue I can ignore? Or, because I'm paranoid with a new gun, is this going to affect some part of the gun's functioning I'm not aware of and cause a catastrophic failure, ripping a hole in the space time continuum, and set the atmosphere on fire?
Ben elLes
I have a feeling you’re going to be just fine. Send it
danbrew
you’ll be fine. Looks like somebody dropped it - there is a slight radius on that sharp point and it looks like yours has a ding. No worries.
mpd3587
That's what I was thinking as well. Thanks. While it's mildly irritating that someone dinged my gun before I got it, it won't be the last ding it gets. As long as it isn't something that either indicates or will cause an issue (and I don't see how a tiny ding there could cause a problem) I'll not worry about it. Maybe it will make the first mark I put on the finish sting less...
RxArms
If you are concerned, take some sandpaper and smooth out the burrs created by the ding (if there are any). i have multiple dings on my bolt carrier rails from cleaning and whatever else, these things are going to happen. If I feel a ding should be smoothed out I usually take some coarse sandpaper to it.
