Grouse tail fans

Anyone every put their grouse tail fans on display like they do the turkey fans? I've seen a picture of one and they're kind of cool. Might have to make a base for it and keep an eye out for some nice looking fans this fall.

A friend of mine does that with some of his grouse tail fans if the look unique enough, sometimes a red phase is a little out of the ordinary. I think its the same priciple, but have not done this myself.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking - maybe do some if I get them in the different phases, and species.

Yep, they look nice.

Just clean them real well and dust them liberally with Borax...not salt.

Borax is a dessicant and it adds a little bug proofing.

Salt will attract moisture every time the humidity is high, and it doesn't add any protection against bugs like dermestid beetles.

If you want to preserve your turkey and grouse tails get some of the "dry tan" preservative stuff from Dan Chase taxidermy supply. It's mostly mulled Borax, but it's got some kind of an insecticide added and you don't have to worry about the bugs eating up your stuff.

A 5# bag is cheap, and it'll last a lifetime.

I've got 10 tails fanned in seperate picture frames with 2 different types of fabric they're mounted on (backing) .. they look great on the wall and you don't have to dust 'em.

i do it with all of the nice males i get every year, they are starting to take over one wall in my garage.
