New member seeking advice re: finicky M1014

Hi, I'm new to this forum and would really like some advice about my M1014. First, though, I love this shotgun, but nevertheless, it does have an issue. I'm insanely jealous of you who have benellis like mine that feed everything in sight. I want mine to be like that.

I get frequent malfunctions that manifest themselves this way: a round is fired, then the bolt locks back, and the next shell gets stuck on the carrier with about 1/16th of an inch stuck inside the magazine tube. The load this happens with most often is AA #7 1/2 and #8 1 1/8 ounce Super Sport. I need this to function with birdshot because it's required for USPSA competition, and I shoot a lot, and need to buy the least expensive stuff I can find. Usually, what's on sale. That's why I have a lot of this load and would like it to function.

I previously had this gun set up with a Mesa Tactical 8 round side saddle and an Eotech, both of which I've removed. Same problem.

If light loads are the problem, then I'm confused as to why it cycles Remington Managed Recoil 1 ounce slugs. It runs fine with full power 00 buck and most heavier loads, but I've also had trouble with 3 inch magnums. These were tried just as an experiment, not my idea of fun.

If the solution is to keep trying different loads until it finds something it likes, I can live with that. I must admit though, that the stories I hear, and have read in forums and magazine articles, where the gun gobbles up everything makes me want one like that also.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

http://www.militec.com/firearms/manual.html check out page 67 Troubleshooting and what would the #1 cause of malfunction: "OE" commonly known as Operator Error, even GI's seem to have problems from time to time.

Just clean it up per manuel, and the load you are shooting is on minimum range to cycle but should shoot with no problems? First M4 Malfunction i have seen but guns are man made by some! use the lubes they mention on page 60 and do not over lube and shoot some heavy loads in it for a while after cleaning? if still having issues 1-301-283-6981 CS:D what flavor rounds are ya using that have issues and what ya been using for lube?

I don't think it's the loads, and I doubt there's a cleaning issue if you are as experienced as it sounds like you are.

There are some sharp guys on these forums with the M4/M1014's, and I'm sure some of them will step in and give you some solid pointers.

Meanwhile you may want to search the archives here and on shotgunworld.com for "M1014 problems".

Here's one such result that may be relevant... and intelligible.

Hey M1014, you're one of those guys I'm jealous of.:) Funny you should mention the snap caps; I have some, mainly to help learn and teach the manual of arms, but I'll try them as you suggest. Thanks.

And thanks to all who posted. Right now, if I had to guess, I have about 300 rounds through it, but maybe less. I think I'm going to shoot the snot out of it for another couple hundred rounds or so and re-evaluate.

A friend suggested I contact Benny Hill (Not the late Brit comedian:) ) as he's supposed to be the Benelli man to fix problems. Any one have experience with him?

one of these guys said call C/S ,,,do that berfore you go to Benny,,,,,,because the M4 series gas guns have special parts and features that others don't,,,Benny does alot with the M1 & 2 series which are way different from yours,,tear yours down,,work that trigger group,,look at the reciever port area ,make sure your bolt to chamber area locks up solid,,recoil spring slams the bolt not sets it into the chamber,,fondle the whole weapon slowly and carefully,,,put some pics on the forum for us to see,,,read that manual,,plus there are other M1014 manuals to read to,,,,get going,,the answer is right in front of you and me and the rest of us,,,keep us posted,,thanks

When you clean your shotgun- I'm assuming you have cleaned it, right? Because the factory gunk will definitely cause issues. Clean out the mag tube with a 12 ga or 10 ga brush with a patch soaked with CLP then run another patch dry through it. If this doesn't work clean the recoil tube. Spray it out with gun scrubber or carb cleaner and the hit it pretty good with clp or rem oil and then work the action aggressively. I betcha that will do the trick for ya, in addition to the regular cleaning. Your gun should shoot the 3 1/4 dram or dr shells ( thats max dr) with a 1 1/8 oz payload- shot size has no effect, only powder and payload weight. Many guns after being broken in will function with even lighter loads. I have one that will shoot Walmart Superspeed loads which are 7/8 oz ( standard 20 ga payload). My other M4 will only cycle the 1 1/8 loads, which is fine because that's the minimum that it is meant to function with. The other gun might just be a fluke and it will only function with these super light loads when clean for about 4 boxes then it will FTF.

A thorough cleaning like johnnywitt suggested should do the job. However, if after you've cleaned it you are still having trouble I would suggest taking the action apart and putting it back together after cleaning each individual piece. Something could have gummed up the action in an area that is otherwise undetectable.
