  1. MDOG, all PM's returned : StangerDanger always has spot on insights as well as great knowledge - cause and effect which can only learned by experience in handling and observing Benelli operating systems over many years.

    Great contributor to this forum!

I've got an M2 approximately 5 years old ... maybe 1000 - 1500 rounds through it. Had significant issues this hunting season with the bolt not completely locking up. Can happen with initial loading and pressing of bolt release (then can't feed 2nd shell into magazine) as well as after first shot fired it will cycle but fail to completely lock up so second shot can't be fired. I've disassembled and cleaned the bolt and receiver is also clean. After this failed to improve the problem I dismantled the stock to get at the recoil spring ... not surprisingly there was a little bit of crud so I cleaned spring and tube and very lightly lubricated. Unfortunately this didn't make a difference. It appears to me that the action is slow and I suspect a weak spring (not sure how to test this). Now I know its a different operating system but the action on my A400 closes WAY faster and with WAY more force. Figured I'd try a Wolff spring but unfortunately they're not shipping to Canada right now. Anything I might be missing or any other suggestions? Should I be changing the magazine spring as well?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Your recoil spring is wore beyond tolerance, you could replace it with a OEM Benelli spring, however with a M2 I always prefer with exception of a 20 gauge like replacing these with a Wolff OEM Power spring which you should be able to purchase from Midway USA or from a reseller on EBAY.  If you sense your magazine spring is getting softer replace this as well, typically this not needed.  If you can not source parts or need any additional information please PM me, more than happy to help.

I cross posted it on Shotgun World and the consensus was it is not normal. When pushing the carrier down straight down it will not go fully down and you have to push it left slightly for it to go in the bolt groove to get a shell in. I think the carrier is bent or not formed correctly. I sent it and will update when I get it back from Benelli.

Not meaning to disrespectful here, in review of more than 25 SBE Classics & SBE 3's in inventory, every Benelli has the same offset.  I currently am working on 2 SBE II's 2 M1 Super 90's, 2 SBE 3's, 2 Franchi Affinity 3's, they all have the same offset.  I am including a photo of a un fired SBE 3.1417780625_BenelliSBE3New.thumb.jpg.9c1cc55e6090aab37d6778889e39334b.jpg SBE 3.

  4. My recommendations:

    Discontinue Ghost loading

    Replace Carrier Latch

Remove 5 shot extension, reinstall OEM magazine tube and OEM Spring

Why: Some/most extension builders are not revising the Magazine Springs to meet requirements to not only function with the product line but this in consideration with the Gun Manufacturers Carrier Latch Design and strength.  Most Carrier Latches I replace, many per year have one thing in common, extended magazine tubes.

I build M4 with  magazine extensions as well using the correct parts and calibrated magazine springs.  Stranger Danger and Steve Rose are great resources on this forum how to do this correctly.

  5. Did you heat the recoil spring tube plug assembly which would loosen the locktite?   The trick is to hold the recoil spring tube without marring it up when removing plug assembly.  Having worked on close to 900 Benelli I had a press built which clamps down on the tube and is hard rubber coated.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

  6. Hi Mike,

You more than likely have a bent carrier latch if you have a extended magazine, most extended magazine kits do not calibrate the Magazine Spring correctly thus causing damage to the carrier latch.  I replace several.. too many of these every year, mostly damaged by extended magazine & calibration.

Here is a photo of the carrier latch.  Part 63

Please let me know if you would like instructions on how to remove it.  You will more than likely need to replace the part as well.

  7. This is a very nice gun, you would be getting the following over the base SBE 3

Rob Roberts Choke tubes plus OEM

    Hi Viz front sight

    Unique cerakote color

    Rob Roberts Precision Forcing Cone

    Benelli Large Carrier Latch Button

    Benelli Bolt Handle

    Polished Slide

    Polished action

Robert Roberts Pattern included with every gun.

Handling it unloaded, If you pull the bolt back just right, you can get it to stick open without pressing the detent button on the trigger gaurd. Again, if you just push the handle, it will go ahead and close right. Is this normal, or is it hanging on something?

    This would be normal.

  9. Mike,

When you press the carrier latch button on the side of the receiver you are moving the carrier latch inward cover more of the magazine tube.  You may have debies behind the carrier latch.

If I was servicing the gun I would:

Remove magazine spring and follower, insuring all of these parts are clean.

Remove and check the carrier latch itself, seeing if it is bent.  Do you have a extended magazine on the gun?

Please let me know if you would like instruction on how to remove the Carrier Latch.

    Your issues are very minor.

  10. Is your bolt & rails clean?

Are you using CLP to very lightly lubricate the bolt upon reassembly?

Shouldering the gun?  Are you providing good support allowing your inertia system to function?

  11. Mike,  you do not need to press the carrier latch to load shells into your magazine.  Perhaps our understanding of the correct part terminology is not the same.  If you would like to PM me I could provide you with details.  Can you load shells into your magazine?

  12. This would be the location it would occur due to barrel restriction's.  Here is some notes from a gun that I worked on recently.

The barrel has a bulge in in approximately 6.5 from the muzzle, this measure 2 CM, the gun must have been shot with an obstruction in the barrel.
