  1. I think you're on the right track. We use mostly mallards. I really like the GHG life size. Only use feeders in an area ducks will actively feed. I rarely put out feeders. I do have some full body mallards for the really shallow stuff both active and feeders. I really like the way they look in a spread and it really adds to the overall realism of your spread. We will throw in a few pintails, maybe a couple woodies and a couple teal, some gaddies on bigger water. Teal will usually decoy into anything. For teal season we use the hot buys from GHG. Their small size is perfect for teal season (hens only). Then, when regular season rolls around bring them all out. The variation in size, shape and the variation in brands really adds to your spread. I would really consider getting some goose floaters in case a rare honker just happens to be looking for some friends. Motion decoys are very effective, both spinning wing and movement in the water. Very important in our spread and sometimes just a little tug on the jerk string seals the deal. High pressured birds will become very wary of your mojo's so make sure you have a remote or some kind of multicycle switch to add some variation. As far as calling, I use a mallard hen call, and a 6 in 1 in whistle, wigeon, pintails, drake mallard, wood duck and if you use it right, teal. Practice now and it will pay off in the long run. I don't think it hurts to throw a little pintail flutter to a group of mallards. Its something different and not what they are used to hearing. The drake whistle is also a very usefull tool.
  2. Thanks. Several people have asked me that. And I really don't know. I feel its somewhere in the 125-150 pound range. And at 12' long its not easy to manage. My wife who has helped me move it several times thinks its somewhere in the 300 pound range....She wrestles cows most days so she might have a better idea than me.... I'm not a good judge of weight. That's why my fish are usually bigger... So I really don't know. What I do know is that two men can handle it very easily and I have yet to try nor do I really want to handle it by myself. I took it out on the water for the first time yesterday. She floats!!!!! Its suprisingly stable and not a bit fun to paddle...I'll either tow it behind my duck boat or look for a cheap small outboard to power it. When it sat unloaded in the water it only fell one inch below the water line. When I sat on it it was only two inches. I think an excited dog and a bag of decoys at the front would even it out a bit. Overall I'm very happy to this point. I still don't have a good plan to get it out of my truck bed and into the water by myself. I might try and find a trailer...My wife should be pleased... I'll post some pis of the maiden voyage sometime...
  3. Thanks fellas. I did not get to use it last year. In fact, it's not even been on water yet.... Hopefully I can use it a few times this year. Its so blasted heavy I can't manage it very well by myself. I'de rather hunt my 16 footer than this thing. But it will be handy when my buddy finishes his. Between the two of us, we should be able to manage. I'm already getting the itch....
  4. I am actually. I kind of forgot about posting some pics... I'll try to get some on tomorrow... Still have not had it out on the water yet....
  5. A call lanyard is not complete without one of those six-in-one whistles. My first call was a double reed Duck Buster from Big River Game calls. Very good call for the money. Really, you can't go wrong with anything listed above. I would get me a good CD or DVD and find a call that fits your fancy. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=103107_d_waterfowl-catfeathunt&id=0034575223523a&navCount=0&podId=0034575&parentId=cat20823&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=XH&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20823&hasJS=true
  6. They were flawless last year with my M2000....I don't mind shooting better shells but I bought a bunch on sale last winter..... Oh well
  7. Anyone else having trouble using Expert shells? They are real inconsistent in my SBE II but the only loads I've had jams on, which have been several with a clean gun even. Mostly 3" #3's and 1's. Went to DryLocks and had no problems. Just curious if anyone else has had problems?
  8. Nearly. I need to prime and paint the bottom. Everything else is done. This is the first I've posted in a while. Little guy takes up a lot of time.... I'll post some picks as soon as I'm done.
  9. That's where the remote comes in. Get them interested then shut it off. Works Great...
  10. My advice is to get the package with the remote and multi-cycle function. Turning them off just before the birds commit or mixing up the inervals at which they rotate really helps. Get one with at least the on off remote.
  11. Mojo Outdoors have been great to work with. They've sent me replacement parts for free for one of my remote kits. The motion wings will certainly attract ducks to your spread. Late season birds have seen it all and most mojo's flare birds. Others on here are going to virtually crucify you for using them. I use anywhere from zero to three in my spreads. I hunt public land so I have to use them to keep up. For that reason I've started hunting less popular places so I don't have to worry about some douche rod setting up two hundred yards down wind, with five mojos... I enjoy my hunts a lot more even if my bag is a little lighter.... I think most waterfowl hunters would gladdly support a nationwide ban on motion wing decoys but until then plan on others using them.
  12. Good point. I thought about that. I thought it would be better to get it on the water once it was sealed. Who knows.... I'm not getting my hopes up this year with the baby due any time. I'll certainly appreciate every chance I get though. Glad you guys are having a good season so far.
  13. Thanks TMAC. I got kind of lucky with her. The first time she ever saw a goose was while we were duck hunting. It ended up being nearly a 20 pound goose. She struggled with it a bit but finally made it. I never trained with a goose but she's taken to it very well. We shot some more geese that day and she seemed to handle them well. Too this day I don't know how I got so lucky. I did very little training with her while she lived with my wife at vet school. Mocha's naturaly ability far outways any training ability I might have had. She certainly has her flaws but I love hunting with her!! Those hunting labs, some kind of special dog...
  14. Thank you. She's a little...a lot ate up about hunting. She's not been the steadiest so far this season so she got the leash... We'll work on that before season starts... I hope.
  15. That is my dog platform. Made it a little larger than I intended. The plans did not call for anything other than just the cockpit. So I made a dog platform and a little storage area by the transom, just large enough for a battery and a blind bag. I did not want a wet, messy dog inside my comfortable cockpit.
  16. I first bought a Stoeger M2000. I settled actually. After a two seasons it was obvious that this gun was not made for the long run and for the hard use I would bestow. It functioned flawlessly but little things statred going wrong. Then I finally told myself to save up and I did. I bought the SBE II because of its reliability, versatility and simplicity and have no regrets thus far.
  17. Has any one ever seen pelicans fly in formation? From long ways off they look like a nice flight of geese. Yeah, we sure felt stupid. Calling and flagging...Glad no one was around to tell us how stupid we were.
  18. Well, I'm just about ready to start the fiberglassing process. Between it and a crib I'm building I hope I can get it done. Wife is one month out and so is the season!! Whatever should I do!!!???? (build the damn crib if I ever want to go hunting again...)
  19. Yeah...I have not even got the thing fiberglassed yet. I'm still doing all the prep work leading up to that, rounding all my edges and making corners so that the fiberglass does not make any 90 degree changes. It took me the better part of the month to get my runners the way I wanted them. I've got a little over a month before season opens here. I'll post some pics throughout the fiberglassing and painting process. The work I'm doing now is very tideous, time consuming and flat out boring. But very necessary imo. Going goose hunting this weekend in a very shallow marsh. Wish I had it ready.

    West Nile

I hope your buddy pulls through just fine and can get back in the outdoors in no time.
  21. Much appreciated. I laminated mine....OCD, I know.... How about one of those guides for cleaning the recoil spring/tube. I'm dreading that one when it comes time...
