  1. It was a "Benelli Weekend" as I was carrying my R1 also. I have already shot my buck and a doe this year and was hoping for a pig, but did not see any. Picture of my son and I in the woods: David
  2. The last morning hunt of the trip my son shot this spike buck at about 110 yards. Quartering away from him, perfect heart shoulder shot: David
  3. Our last deer hunt of the season - season lasts through next weekend, but we won't make it back out then. My son got a new Benelli R1 in 30.06 for Christmas (pics posted elsewhere). We got the rifle sighted in and headed for the lease. The 1st night my son shot this big pig, guestimate weight ~150-200 pounds. Shot her on the run at about 90 yards. David
  4. Here's the other side and the belly: David
  5. I previously posted about how much my son liked my Benelli R1. Well, I bought him one for Christmas, same as mine (what he wanted) - 30.06, 20"barrel, wood stock. Now I have been well pleased w/ my rifle. It has been accurate, the wood is very attractive and the trigger out of the box broke about 4#'s and has broken in to about 3.5#'s. Well, here is what my son't new rifle looks like - check the wood! That's just nice! The trigger out of the box is breaking cleanly at 3#'s. Obviously haven't shot it yet, got to wait till after Christmas. Mounted an old Bushnell 4200 4-16x40 for him (at least for now) - can't wait for Christmas! David
  6. Next morning we set up in one of my interior woods stands. A doe came out early, we had the tags and needed the venison. My son put the R1 up and sent a 30.06 150grn SST her way and down she went. Complete pass through again, I was going to prop her up for a better picture, but the damage was a little gruesome for a pic from the exit wound so I settled for this pic: That evening we hunted one of the more open stands w/ a good view. Lots of activity, but not the buck we were looking for. The weather warmed over the next 2 days and the deer activity slowed. We did not see any more bucks and only 2 more does. Oh well, we have some venison, bacon and some time left in hunting season... David
  7. Spent the last 4 days at the lease w/ my son. He has shot numerous does and small cull bucks and has been hoping for a little bit nicer buck this year which has, so far, eluded us. 1st night on my favorite stand we saw a few does then this buck w/ a damaged rack: I age him at about 3 1/2, hopefully he just damaged his rack in the velvet this year and we'll get a shot at him next year. Later that evening in the last 5 minutes of legal shooting time, a group of 5 wild hogs came through. A 150+ lb sow, 2 55lb pigs and 2 20ish lb pigs. My son dropped the one w/ the white legs 1st shot. The group broke as my son fired his second shot, a miss (no lead). Third shot crosshairs on the nose and dumped the other pig: 150grn Hornady SST's are very destructive, both complete pass throughs, both DRT. Tasty bacon!
  8. Steve, Can you tell me about the bear fence please? What is it, how does it work? Thanks, David
  9. Picked up this porker Sunday morning. My son and I got down from our stand about 10:00am in a light drizzling rain. Got in the truck and begin driving down one of the lease roads back to camp, spotted two pigs in the field. I had unloaded my Ruger, but merely taken the live round out of the chamber in my Benelli R1 that my son was carrying. I quickly stopped the truck and grabbed the R1 from the back seat. The pigs were now running in the field through knee high goatweed, trying to make cover about 140 yards away. I had to run about 20 yards to get from behind some mesquite trees. Took a knee and started swinging the rifle on the rear pigs nose right as she reached cover. Pulled the trigger right as she reached the tree line. Obviously hit a little further back than I intended, but the 150grn Hornady Interbonds put her down "right now" anyway. Nice eating size, weighed ~80 pounds. Rifle is a Benelli R1 30-06 carbine w/ a Trijicon 2.5-10x56. David

Steve, I haven't had my R1 nearly as long as you, but that has been my experience as well for the 200+ rounds that I've put through mine: Flawless autoloading operation, returns to zero every time, excellent accuracy. David
  11. I haven't had mine very long (few months) and I've only disassembled and cleaned it about 6 or 7 times. So far mine has held it's zero perfectly every time. I have 20" 30-06 w/ the wood stock. David
  12. Nice 'bou! Lots of interest here for reading about your Dall Sheep hunting adventure. I've read everything you've posted - great writing, great adventures. I agree w/ the others, Benelli should be paying you! David
  13. TMAC The 338 Federal is merely a 308 necked up to take a 338 caliber bullet, following a long tradition of necking the 308 up and down to a variety of calibers from the 243 winchester up to the 358 Winchester. The 338-08 has been a very popular wildcat round for many years and like it's bigger brother, the 358win, it has been shown to throw same weight bullets at significantly higher velocities than it's parent 308. Also like the 358win, the 338 fed has the ability to throw significantly heavier bullets w/ much greater frontal area than the 308 win - this combination leads to killing power that seems to be out of proportion for the round in the 358 win, and the same seems to be true of the 338 federal. The 338 caliber is far more popular than the 358 caliber and as a result there is a tremendously better variety of bullet selections for the 338 federal than the 358 win. Federal is currently offering 6 very good factory loads for the 338 federal in bullet weights from 180 grn to 210 grns suitable for any game in North America. Additionally, there are a tremendous variety of bullets available for reloaders from 160 grn Barnes TTSX (max loads of ~3100fps!) to 225 grn bullets in a wide variety of styles. The 338 Federal is not the latest, hottest, etc. - it's a sensible hunting round w/ modest recoil for it's performance that appeals to the bigger bullet crowd - I like it! David
  14. Performance is outstanding. My rifle really likes the 180grn Accubonds. W/ it's 22" barrel it's averaging about 2860fps on my Chrony. The rifle shoots really accurately, recoil is moderate. I hope to kill deer/pigs w/ it this year. Mine is a M77 Hawkeye stainless model. I replaced the plastic stock w/ a M77 Ultra light stock purchased from Brownells. Required a little fitting to get the standard sized barrel into the ultra light stock, but I'm pleased w/ the results - I would put a picture up, but I'm not allowed yet... David
  15. I appreciate the humor, but a 338 cal barrel and 308 bolt face are pretty much "off the shelf" items. It's not as far fetched as you seem to think. Lots of call for 338Federal semi-autos - if you do a little searching you will find that it is "THE" hot caliber in AR-10's now. For those of us that like the reliable functioning and the ability to break a semi-auto down completely for cleaning like an AR-10 but don't like the cold military looks, the Benelli R1 in 338Federal would be a winner! I love my R1 carbine in 30.06, wish I could get one in 338Federal. David
  16. I have a 338 Federal Ruger m77 - would love to have one in a Benelli R1! Sign me up, consider it sold... David
