Redcell
Hello all, Santa brought me a new 26 inch Nova pump for christmas. My question is what do all the chokes do? I have a full and a modified and a improved cylinder. I have only hunted dove in the past. But I am puting in for turkey and already have a duck hunting trip planed. The older shotgun I am use too did not have chokes on it. Just want to be educated. I tried to search for the info but could not find what they are use for or what type of patterns. Thank in advance
curdog
Your booklet should help you with this . But the chokes are full for a tight patern which means the shot will stay tighter together it,s used more for something sitting still like turkey and squirrel as you go down the line mod would be less open it,s the in between choke then you have impcyl which is more open for moving targets like shooting skeet and quail , it depends on your shooting skills which choke you need there are some people who could use a full choke and shoot skeet were most people use impcyl to give them a more wide open pattern . Note this is with lead shot if your shooting steel shot it stays tighter so you would want to shoot mod instead of full etc .
tucker301
Your older shotgun was more than likely choked to some degree, but it was a fixed choke (made into the barrel). http://www.ssaa.org.au/stories/shotguns-a-beginners-guide-to-shotgun-chokes.html http://hunting.about.com/od/shotgun/l/aastshotgunfaqa.htm

duckht183
Check out your chokes before you shoot them because the full choke might say "Lead Only". Be carefull, you dont want to ruin that brand new shotgun.
Matt D
Remember to always use choke lube, it will keep the chokes from getting stuck and keep them from backing out. Enjoy the new gun.
splashtx556ftw
also, if you shoot skeet or trap, check the choke often, to make sure its not getting lose. as for chokes, iuse the i/c for opening day of dove season. you know slow/ low flying birds. modified after the 2nd week, birds fling 40mph/ at 40 ft up. and full on the last 2 weeks of the season. birds 80ft onthe air flying all out 70 mph. MontefeltroPro
We have a choke-specialist company here in the Houston area that has some really fine products: Briley has a variety of chokes for ALL brands and they also sell a wrench that will torque those babies in tight enough so they won't loosen in use. Also, choke lube, chokes cases, etc. Try Briley.com and have a look. I am into their ported extended chokes (in my case, for the Benelli Montefeltro)... they make them for all brands. They reduce recoil (a tiny bit) and muzzle lift as well. Good patterns and kick-ass "looks." They're pretty and make your gun look mean.
