sporting vs. field guns

whats the difference between sporting and field guns. Lets say i bought a franchi 612 sporting could i still use it for hunting?

the main difference that ive seen is the quality of the wood on the gun cheeper wood goes into field guns its just a matter of weather or not you want to scratch the finish on the weapon

yes- you can hunt w/it ... just make sure the chamberings are ok with you ... some sporting models are only offered in 2-3/4" chambers and generally are built a bit 'tighter' in stock dimensions.

Sporting guns ar eused for mostly trap, skeet, and sporting clays but can be used when bird hunting. They ususally have higher ribs and recoil reducers.

woah, did I take your name or did you take mine? I will keep the 8 shot on mine just so there is no confusion. The major difference is the shot pattern. On a trap gun it will be about 60/40, which means that 60% of your shot will go above the bead and 40 below. With a field gun you are looking at about 80/20 (I think that is what Mine is) meaning 80% of the pattern is below the bead and 20% is above so you pretty much have to cover up the target, as there is a lot more shot below the bead. Any compitent gunsmith can turn a field gun into a trap gun though

that's a Franchi SL-12 Sporting doing its job in South Dakota on wild birds..

 

no high rib or recoil reducer .. be careful of the advice you give.
