  1. The loss of sight from one eye will diminish stereoscopic ie 3D capability, cant change the physics, however the learned behavior of tracking a target will only be affected slightly as you brain compensates for this loss by reading the size of the object you are tracking. It gets smaller , it's farther away. The trick here would be to compensate for the loss of three dimensions by removing the need for that information. Might I suggest learning trap or skeet style shooting with a firm cheeklock on the comb and tracking the target. Now you have the ability to track well, line up the firearm and judge distance to some degree. Just remember to take care of the good eye with quality protective optics. By the by, it's a medical opinion though not a consult by any means.
  2. does anyone know the heights of the raised comb 81044p and extra high comb 81045p for the SBEII?
  3. Check to see if there are any load restrictions at your trap range. Our local range has a restriction to 1oz max as the city is encroaching on it. Realize your gun may have problems with very light loads.
  4. About not planting it well in the shoulder ... I noted this issue when I let the son of my hunting partner try shooting the gun. He's 11 and I let him fire it from the hip with me helping to hold it. With a 2 3/4 1 1/4oz load it would not cycle yet when I fired the same load from the shoulder cycled every time. As for the cold , if I ever had a problem it was because the grease had stiffened or I foolishly let ice get into the action.
  5. PS: Check out the Franchi if your dead set on inertia systems.
  6. $1200 is a lot of money for a shotgun. I bought my SBEII with very high expectations and most of them were met. For the money though the inititial quality control on last years models was poor. Paint chipping can be expected, stiff safeties, choke tube wrenches that would not fit and gel pads that fell off on this price range should not be. To thier credit Benelli's distributor and aspecially Christina Day at Benelli did rectify all the problems. Unfortunately guns are rarely like cars where you can test drive them or like most products returnable. Once you buy this baby, it's yours unless you want to sell it cheap. I have been lucky that I have had the opportunity to try several guns and have let some prospective buyers have a close look at my range. There are not a lot of SBEII's around, so they met a lot of interest. To my surprise just as many were sold on it as had changed their minds. Benelli's a great gun but by no means is it the be all and end all. Do you really need 3 1/2? Do you clean you gun regularly? My 11-87 never once jammed in 10 years on any load but I clean after every day, only takes 15 minutes never had a seal fail either but I replace them yearly. Patterns well and easy to shoot. Figure out what you need and what you want, erase the hype and choose.
  7. Oh yes the spring, leave it cocked only if you want it to be pooched. Springs have a fixed life and will perform better in the long run if stored in a "relaxed" postion.
  8. Dump the Mattel case! either a good sealed case, or gun cabinet in a cool dry place. I clean well, use a rust inhibitor, and a silicone gun sock just in case it bangs into another gun. My wife moaned but the gun cabinet left the basement and is in a above ground closet with a can of silica ( can be recharged) moisture absorbant in the cabinet. I also have a dehumidifier in the summer months in my storge area. Few guns are investments but are tools that have a fixed life with usage. Once rusted the guns are never quite the same.
  9. I agree with tucker, not a gun for light loads. Cycles 31/2's really well but can be muderous on the shoulder. My hunting partner who had shoulder surgery several years ago found that 31/2's caused a lot of pain quickly and he had to abandon that round completely for three inch. He has a nova pump. After using my SBE for several months now I find it a good gun. It's light therefore easy to carry but does it shot better than a 391 or 11-87? My score are all similar, just a matter of personal preference. Before you buy make sure you check the gun carefully finish, security of the butt pad, ease of safety motion and a choke tube wrench that fits all the choke tubes. Toss out the mattel case a and get a good aluminum case to protect your purchase. One last thing, I went on a gun buying binge with a friend to Bass Pro shops and the salesman there took his time with my friend and gave a great pearl of advice. Pick three guns you really like close you eyes with each one and see how it feels in your hands, the swing, the weight and the balance. Most people can't fire 10 rounds in 11/2 seconds and do clean their guns more often than once a year. Pick the gun that feels best and is well made and you'll get lots of birds.
  10. As A Canadian, I Have had experience here. You cant purchase it yourself unless you are a US Citizen. You can have some gun shops try to export it but you would have better luck purchasing it in a EU country.
  11. When I invited comments to my statement I expect to hear pros and cons but as far as most are concerned insults and personal attacks are out of line. My comments were regarding Benelli’s quality control. I have no qualms with their customer service, in fact kudos to Christina Day and all there for their prompt attention to problems. Benelli USA is a business not an individual some I’m sure they are thick skinned enough to realize the difference between a personal jab and pointing out a concern with a product. However, I work in a corporate culture where quality is the ultimate goal. As far as we have been concerned a customer service department is functioning well when they are all bored. The issues I pointed out were all addressed by customer service fairly promptly but that was not the issue. The problems lay back in Italy. The SBE II is an update of the SBE it’s upgrades consisting of a new stock, an expanded trigger guard group and a new barrel and choke system. All three of these areas have had problems that are easily resolved on an individual basis, but could they be better resolved at the point of manufacture? I’m sure this cost Benelli USA a great sum of money to settle these issues on a piecemeal basis. As well, I have bought and paid for my gun but a lot of readers hear are contemplating a new gun. In this case they can identify issues at point of sale or manufacture and resolve them at the gun store rather than making multiple trips or phone calls to service. I am sure CS at benelli would have fewer calls if these issues could even be rectified by the dealer before the gun is sold. Consider this a case of looking out for the next guy. Would I not buy my gun if I had to do it again? No, but I would have the dealer make sure all was well before I left the shop. As for QC what level of defect is acceptable? On a percentage basis with essentially 4 new components and three having problems and that is a 75% rate. The only way these issues will be fixed at source is to let Benelli know. The SBE is a great gun, other than the issues raised it has performed exceptionally. One can accept that problems will occur during the first year of production but Benelli needs to know what issues to fix. Unfortunately the only way to produce diamonds is to apply heat and pressure. Consider the SBEII a diamond in the rough. Fixed, it is a diamond. As for the recoil must admit I really notice it only after I’m done shooting my group. In the heat of hunting I did not notice much, but my partner had to give up 3 1/2” as it was tearing away at a previous shoulder repair. Laws off physics are pretty set. The only was to reduce the true recoil is to use smaller shells ( mass change), or channel gas energy to some other route such as operating the reloading mechanism or a ported barrel. The other features modify recoil. Heavier guns need more energy to accelerate to a given speed into your shoulder hence increasing the time of recoil (less perceived) and pads either absorb some energy or spread it out (increasing duration hence less perceived) The Benelli kicks just as much as any pump or double barrel. I really have to suggest a recoil pad that you wear, lower weight faster shot (spreads out the energy curve) and if needed a recoil reducer (mercury) to increase the mass of the gun. Benelli girl, thanks for the advice re the silicone glue. I just needed to hear what was the approved fix for the problem from Benelli. Thanks
  12. Wow Mudhen, Is there some reason your taking this personaly? If a product does not work properly most people would look to find what the problem is and fix it. You seem to feel that defects are ok. That I guess is your issue. Benelli offers a post forum to hear comments good and bad. People as yourself perhaps have some other interest that conflicts with the ability to judge a product as a consumer. So what did you do with your Lexus and its problems or is that something your content with. And for the record do you have anything to to with Benelli USA?
  13. Origionally posted in recoil pad problems: Well an interesting collection of comments but no reply from Benelli directly. It's beginning to seem that the SBEII is a gun with numerous problems all seeming to relate to quality control. 1) Recoil pads that fall off 2) A stiff safety 3) Choke tube wrench that does not fit all the tubes 4) Swivel point that dont universally fit all sling mounts Realistically, all problems that should not exist on a $1300 firearm and are seemingly adresses in a piecemeal fashion ie only squeaky wheels get greased. The worst part is that the gun is still being sold in this manner. I spoke with my gun dealer this week and mentioned all the problems and he was surprised and stated he had heard nothing from Benelli on any of these issues but was now going to check each gun out carefully before selling them and would advise buyers to think carefully about the SBE or other guns. People have a high expectation from Benelli and considering the advertising and price of the product, deserve to have that expectation met. This is the first year of the gun being out in the market and all of us knowingly take a risk in purchasing anything in its inception year. But this gun is essentially a SBE with a frozen barrel and fancy stock , nothing more. Was it rushed into production, very likely but I hope Benelli will take the high ground and stop their production, corrrect the problems and do right by all those who have lent thier faith and hard earned cash to a company and product.

  15. Ok I just received my new replacement recoil pad from benelli today. I have seen that there are others out there with the same problem of loosing thier rubber in the heat of the moment So..... what's the best way to make it stick. I wanna hear this from Benelli A) glue? if so what kind B) Tape so far my most secure option but looks like **** on a 1300$ gun C) Any creative ideas! But also what is the real problem. Is the stock spreading on firing, was the pad sized incorrectly at manufacture? is there a release agent that needs to be removed. Let us know so we can fix the problem.
  16. Holy Cripes! afterthat you could use the barrel for a drinking straw. If it isnt clean after your done with it it never will be.
  17. So I'm not alone, What do you think of the theory of the stock opening up a bit on each shot? The stock is quite thin compared to some synthetic stocks I have seen. I with be using the camo duct tape as soon as benelli sends me a new pad. By the way I still have no pad 9 days after calling customer service.

11-87 for 31/2 is a great gun with good recoil cheap too relatively speaking. With that rotator though always consider the lightest load you can get and a vest with recoil pad. Stay away from 31/2 though as unless you going for big birds way up high you wont get them any deader.
  19. Tried both, the nova seems more. My buddy gave up using 3.5 in the nova as his shoulder got too sore after a bit I was ok with the sbeII but lost my recoil pad ( see earlier post)
  20. I feel your pain... try a vest with an insertable recoil pad such as the PAST system. Several companies make similar vests some with visco elastic inserts. I have gone sofar as to insert a 1/2" thick piece of high density foam such as from a camping mattress into a vest shoulder pocket. If that still is too painful I would look at a gas operated gun. They shoot well personally like the a391 from berretta
  21. best bet I know is to use a padded vest such as the PAST system. Perhaps you should also consider a gun thas uses a gas system or a lighter caliber. Remember there is no joy in shooting a gun if it kicks the crap out of your shoulder. I f the benelli is too much kick consider a a391 or 11-87 with a good pachmyer pad.
  22. This same comment comes with all benelli's. In europe , benelli provides a cleaning kit when you purchase a gun but not in NA. Just use a regular kit but may I suggest use a good oil and a coated cleaning rod.
  23. The weather has been cool and brisk in the morning with temps between 30 and 35 F but the afternoons have been a hunters dream. Light breezes highs in the mid 70's and clear skies. I have spent the week hunting with and SBEII as well as other guns and ladies and gentlemen one must hunt his province at least once in life. Friendly people, chaep like borscht and bird literaly begging you to give it a try. Over the last five days an average of 20 to 30 thousand snows on a pond. My partner and I have taken 76 birds without working hard and have walked for mile of simple yet breathtaking scenery. The mix was by the way Canada's Snows, Speckles Grouse Hungarian Partridge. Dont be shy , grab a friend and get out there!
  24. All good points, I have called Benelli and no doubt it shall be resolved. The gun worked well otherwise and it has gamewise been the best hunt ever. I finally got into stride with my SBE ( with a cheapo recoil pad for now) and was ahving one of my best days ever with upland game and waterfowl.
  25. Heres a theory for you: I was letting a friiend's son try firing my SBEII the other day and since he's a little guy let him fie it with a 1oz load from the hip. I had fired these rounds all day without problem but with him (90 lbs) the gun would not cycle. So I tried holding it very loosely at the hip and sue enough it would not cycle as well. Planted in the shoulder firmly cycles well HMmmmmm..... The ability to cycle is based on the recoil either no recoil( the gun against a brick wall ) or to much back motion ( the very light hunter) and poof no cycle. I woulder if a recoil rection unit would help
