  1. Waylon, Savage offers a wide selection of 17's in HMR and HM2 calibers. Many fall within your budget. Savage is famous for out of the box accuracy. My new model 12 Varminter in 22-250 is one-holing at 100 yds with factory ammo. Sent five more little piggies to heaven yesterday, including one not much bigger than a squirrel at 310 yds. www.savagearms.com Also, BSA makes a scope line specifically for the 17, which feature a trajectory dial to adjust for shots from 100-300 yards. 2. ...and BTW, Your papa's 69A was manufactured anywhere between 1937 and 1963. Some models handled shorts - LR's and others were ONLY LR. If the barrel isn't designated as LR ONLY, then it will probably handle all lengths. What's the problem with shooting the LR's? Too much recoil?

  4. Nice work. I can't wait to see your SBE receiver. Please post it when you're finished.
  5. OK. Well that's an impressive resume you've laid out there. I took you up on your offer and did the Google work. I found some good CAD work, and a heap of unfulfilled dreaming out loud. Is this you?
  6. I understand that you have all these parts and that you got them for nothing, or close to nothing, but I can't see this project working on its present course. Is there a problem with your being able to purchase a firearm? Honestly, sincerely, I believe you've been given sound advice reagrding selling off the existing parts and putting the proceeds into the purchase of a new or used SBE. By the time you buy a barrel and the other missing parts, and fabricate a receiver (do you have any idea what that would entail?), you'll have either more money invested than the gun's worth, at best; Or you'll have an unsafe, disfunctional firearm that could possibly kill on both ends. Possibly, probably, likely - BOTH.
  7. This auction should give you some idea of how difficult they are to find and of how expensive they are. [ 07-02-2005, 10:35 AM: Message edited by: tucker301 ]

Sold the Stoeger. Got word that an unexpected $1,400 is headed my way next week, and job 2 has been a real bonanza lately (I do IT contract work for SOHO's on the side). This means I spent a heap of time researching O/U,s the last couple of days and I've decided to give the Veloce a go. I'd completely overlooked that one before, but for the $$$, it seems to be hard to beat.
  10. ...Almost forgot. If you do get a mojo, PM me and I'll show you some mods on mine to improve the design and functionality a bit. They're pretty shoddy from the factory. Considering all the Peking Duck those folks have eaten over the years, I would have expected better
  11. You bet I do! And you're WAY off on the price... if you shop wisely I just picked up a new mojo, remote, et al for less than $100. I got the mojo on Ebay, and I found the best price on the remotes at LL Bean using Froogle. Butch - Thanks for the sensible post on this subject. I wasn't even thinking about buying a mojo until I got into this fray; which got me thinking about them quite a bit. A Robo-Mojo tax? Sure, but only if there's also a special tax on GPS's, Gore-tex, neoprene waders, high-end shotguns, mudbuddy motors, inflatable decoys, and so on, and so on....
  12. 1. The rail will give you the flexibility to position the scope forwards or rearwards as needed, but I'd remove it for waterfowling. It's just once a year on and once a year off. Leupold or Warne QR rings are good either way. 2. I don't use optics for turkeys, so I'll pass on this section. 3. Most of the aftermarket extended turkey tubes are OK for lead, hevi-shot, etc. Check your local laws regarding non-toxic shot for turkeys. It is not required in VA.

  14. I was a Remington disciple for a lot of years. Last year, I bought my R1. Last month, I bought a Savage varmint rifle. In out-of-the box performance and value, Savage cannot be beaten by anyone. Mine is without a doubt the best shooting mass-production rifle I have ever owned, at any price. The cool thing is, that's pretty much the rule with Savage. Downside, Savage factory stocks suck in a huge way. I just ordered my third aftermarket stock in an effort to find something I like. I think I got it right this time with Bell & Carlson. sbeIIfan, Jr. Shot placement, confidence in the weapon, knowledge of its capabilities, and a lack of fear of getting the crap kicked out of you are all more important than shooting the biggest calibers. Consider a 270 or 308 for your current needs. Bolt action for stand and still hunting, or a semi-auto for driven game. Either caliber, with good shot placement and proper load selection, will easily drop anything in the midwest in its tracks. Spend time on the bench, but also practicing off-hand shots. If you can, get into varmint hunting as a means by which to sharpen your skills. After you dump a few woodchucks at 250-300 yards, a whitetail will look like a fat elephant. Learn the ballistics of your chosen load, and push the limits with varmints and targets. I have even used a printed sticker on my stock of my new varmint rifle until I've commited the charts to memory.

    new benelli?

mak48, I always check market prices using gunbroker.com and auctionarms.com. If other dealers will sell them for that, then mine should as well. If I can get it from an out of state dealer, pay the FFL, and the shipping, AND still come out ahead... it's a done deal. I understand your wanting to be up front about ruling out the M2, but a statement like, "I don't like..." will always draw dissenting opinions. That said, the Monte and M2 are measurably different in a number of ways, so your view is well founded. Especially considering the fact that you've already shouldered both guns. 22. You could leave them clear and use a spray on clear lacquer, or you could have the aluminum anodized by a professional. I believe either of these shops could help you. CCR Diamondkote
  23. There are LH SBEII's available in black. I had to call around quite a bit when I bought mine last Fall, but I finally found one about three hours from home. Gander Mountain.. 1.
