  1. Yeah its illegal in a lot of states, but up here in Maine we have a season for it, before deer season when you are able to take one without an extra tag. Baiting def helps bring the black ghost into an area that you want. Dusk is the typical time they come in, but our baiting patterns are an attempt to curve that by training them to come in at the times we want, although like any hunter knows, its always unpredictable and never exact.
  2. I'm going to be on a black bear hunt. Season opens Monday. Hope to post a pic very soon!
  3. I guess no one had an opinion, its alright I found out some info on my own. For anyone who has ever questioned what you can use Brenneke slugs with here is a link from their homepage. http://www.brennekeusa.com/web/text/faq.html I guess I will try out a few different chokes to see what gives me the best results. If any of you have hands on experience I would love to hear it.
  4. Thanks hognutz, I was hoping to hear that they worked great in low light as that is the time I'm expecting the bear to come in. They guy who is teaching me to hunt bear wants me to not leave the blind until I cant see my hand...don't know if I will stay in there that long but I'm glad that they worked great for you in low light. I'm happy that you have hands on experience with them too because that makes me a lot more confident in my decision making. Thanks and I will be sure to let you know which way I end up going.
  5. Plus I believe they can be put on and taken off really quick...that way my bird/clay gun wont get such a makeover...
  6. I dont know yet, last night I came across these: http://www.truglo.com/content/products/firearm/sluggun_rifle/pro_series.asp Any one used them before? I already have a red dot on my 870 that is dead on at about 85 yards, so its a hard decision to invest about $150 when I could get this setup for about $50. The bear will be at about 25-30 yards...Any opinions?
  7. What are your opinions about big slugs and chokes? I'm going to be trying out Brenneke Black Magic Slugs out of my Super Nova. Should I just go without a choke...Cause that's what I'm thinking because this slug is 600 gr! Your comments will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  8. Sad to say that last night when I checked the bait there was no evidence of bear going there . The strangest thing was that the coyotes and raccoons had not even gotten to the rotten meat I put out around for them to start making the scent trails with (you know how dogs love rolling around in nasty crap). I placed some more molasses feed out and in the bait barrel and the whole place reeked of vanilla extract that we poured all over the trees.... I'm going to check it again next Wednesday, meanwhile I will test the Brenneke Black Magic Slugs out of the Benelli at 25-30 yards.
  9. Thanks guys for both of your help. I've been looking all over for a saddle mount, thanks Trapshooter1.
  10. That's a lot of counting and recounting
  11. Thanks NYHUNTCAMP, I'm def going to try them out soon. Glad to hear that others are having a good time with them. The company has been around for 100 years so they should know what they are doing. I emailed the president of Dixie Slugs, just out of curiosity and hoping he gets back to me soon, I was reading his comments in a forum that focused on slug hunting in Alaska on dangerous game and he was pretty much doing the Pepsi challenge against any company who made slugs. He claimed that no other company would come forward and test their slugs against his. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say.
  12. Beautiful dog Novaking.
  13. Anyone tried Dixie Terminator slugs? http://www.dixieslugs.com/products.html
  14. Sounds Great! I'm hungry just thinking about it..although it is lunchtime here...
  15. I decided that I'm going to be using the Brenneke Black Magic Magnum 3" 1-3/8 oz 600 gr slugs (as long as they perform well from the first couple boxes when I test them out). I hope they perform well out of my SuperNova with the red dot sight that I'm going to install; http://www.truglo.com/content/products/firearm/red_dots/reddot_multi-reticle_opent.asp (although I might just go open sights) This Coming Monday afternoon the hunt begins!!!!!!!!!!!!! Checking my bait site tonight...hope there are some big scrapes and footprints!
  16. Very COOL. Hope to see you post a pic of you and the big bad wolf. Best of luck and be safe!
  17. Out of curiosity Trapshooter1, what guns are you looking at buying? Models and brands? Are you getting them for this deer season?
  18. What kind of dog do you have? Good genetics to have it on point at 2 months, although that is what they were bred to do . Did you just buy it or did you breed your dogs?
  19. Thanks guys. I have decided on the setup for the bear hunt with my SuperNova...just need to decide on my ammo (I hope someone gets back to me on that...its in the big game section of the forum) Red Dot Sight http://www.truglo.com/content/products/firearm/red_dots/reddot_multi-reticle_opent.asp Mount http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=711429 If anyone has used any of these products let me know what you think of them. Thanks
  20. I don't fully understand if your looking for the R1 in those calibers or if you are selling them (email)? Go to this link to see the calibers offered: http://www.benelliusa.com/rifles/benelli_r1_rifle.php As far as zeroing the scopes after taking it apart you should look in this section's threads especially "What have U shot with your R-1 ?"at http://www.benelliusa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11936&page=17 because Steve (stid2677) talks about this and says that with his setup it keeps its zero.
  21. Yeah I will def post some pics after the pattern test. I will do it from 10 to 40 yards on a Turkey Target (as long as the turkey pictured target is not too expensive, because I will be doing quite a few shots- 1 shot per target)
  22. Have you ever seen one in the wild in your area? Are they really abundant or are the numbers just getting into an amount that management is needed?
  23. Good Luck on your hunt, I hope you get one. Up here in Maine we have a baiting season that starts August 31st that you need a tag for, but during deer season in November you can take a black bear without an additional tag. Do you have any recommendations for the slugs I mentioned above?
  24. Thanks Trapshooter1, Do you know what mounts are best or have any links to ones that you reccomend for the SuperNova?
  25. I agree 100% with you on this. Why is it that none of the loads go over 2 oz.? I'm sure its from countless tests but still give us the option
